I’ve traveled extensively and stayed in possibly hundreds of hotels. There is exactly one hotel where I can get a good nights sleep. I suppose it’s got a lot to do with the location and atmosphere. It’s a “resort spa” type place and the location is secluded and serene.
I don’t have trouble sleeping anywhere. I could probably take a nap on a busy sidewalk. I don’t like to brag, but I’m very good at sleeping. Maybe even an expert.
@awk Me, too. I fall right asleep UNLESS I have to get up very early in the morning for something important. Then I can’t sleep. But every other time I’m asleep almost as soon as my head hits the pillows.
In hotels and motels, as long as the temperature isn’t too hot, I fall right asleep. Maybe even faster, or at least earlier, because I don’t have the distractions I do at home.
@awk I don’t like to brag either but, I am also very good at sleeping. My crowning achievement was sleeping through a 4 hour convoy from Camp Fallujah to Al Asad Air Base in the armored MTVR 7 ton. We had to wear our flak vests with SAPI inserts and Kevlars (helmets) for the duration of the convoy. I managed to fall asleep about 20 minutes in- after propping my day pack (smallish, light backpack) half under myself and my head while laying on the floor under the bench. I did wake up once, and got to look out the side for a few minutes, but it was generally bare desert with occasional trash piles. I then went back to sleep, uninterested in seeing more.
The best part of the story though, in my opinion, was the chaplain that prayed for our convoy. He came down to say a blessing, as they do for every convoy. I don’t remember much of the specifics, but one thing he said stood out to me. He was going on about keeping us safe and whatnot, then said “Please Lord, send a sniper team of angels to protect these Marines.”
I was in a hotel in the DC area a few years back and their pillows were amaaaaaaazing. I bought a couple off Amazon (yes, I pulled apart the cases to get the labels) and I was a little disappointed. Sleeping in that hotel, with the amaaaaaaazing pillows and the super ironed sheets, fresh scents, yadda yadda, was so nice. Wish my bed was that cozy.
Now…most hotels aren’t that way. In most hotels I feel more like a UPC’d sardine in a beige can under a McDonald’s heatlamp and a Walmart security cam.
I love sleeping in hotels, I probably get the best sleep in them. With that said, the hotel is probably the thing I spend the most of my vacation budget on because as much as I say I am going to go to some far off destination to see the sights, I always end up sleeping most of my trip away.
I just went on a trip over the weekend, it was so nice sleeping in a big bed, waking up to room service.
I love sleeping in hotels, and I love sleeping, period. One of my favorite things, and I hear as we age we sleep less and less. That scares me!!

no, no, no, no, no… and hell no!! i ain’t touching those blankets, those comforters and eeewww those pillows! not my feet on them carpets neither.
both my kids worked at national brand hotels in college.
they ONLY wash the sheets and pillow cases every time! that was about 16 years ago, so maybe it is all different now.
i doubt it though…
@mick Maybe it’s cause I’m a naive teenager who doesn’t care, but I’d much rather sleep on a filthy but comfy bed rather than my filthy but rock solid back seat. I just try not to think about whether they washed the sheets or just snapped them.
As long as the bed isn’t like some sort of sacrificial altar, I usually sleep okay after the first night, but I almost never sleep well the first night anywhere
@Dweezle I also have to bring my own pillows pretty much everywhere I go, because hotel rooms never have enough pillows (i.e. 7-8), and the ones they do have are never the right thickness, firmness, etc.
Hotels, meh. Sometimes I sleep fine, sometimes less so.
I would like to take the opportunity to bring up the topic that this survey is exactly the kind that needs a “meh” choice. So often (and I realize these are for fun) my honest answer is in between or not up there, but it’s not important enough for me to come to the forum and put up my answer that no one really cares about. I’d really like a “meh” option on the question of the day. Just sayin’.
Having worked in a 5 star hotel abut 15 years ago and seeing the “quality” of house keeping. No I do not sleep well in hotels, ew gross. 2 flat sheets on top of the mattress acting as a fitted sheet does nothing to prevent who knows what from becoming a permanent fixture in the mattress. For that reason and many more I avoid hotels. Instead I have a really nice truck and a really nice 5th wheel where any bodily fluids are mine.
After spending a few years “on the road” at corporate expense, I learned to stay away from certain hotel chains. I find staying at better hotels get one a quieter and better night’s sleep. And joining their loyalty program has its rewards.
If I have my “over the head” pillow with me, earplugs and I can block the outside light from coming in then usually I can sleep pretty decently. I just have to have silence and total darkness.
Heading for the beach tomorrow and rented a house so… we’ll see how that goes. Of course… I will have my pillow and earplugs with me.
I sleep better because of the whole “100 miles away from stuff that needs to be done.” But if on my own for business I have to have TV on before I can drift off because the lack of hubby and kid’s presence makes it way too quiet and lonely.
Been in hotels MAYBE 3 times in my life.
If it’s quiet and has a comfy bed, yeah.
Oh! It also kinda depends on how fast the room is spinning… Vegas is kind of a poor sleep zone for me.
Really depends on the circumstances, hotel, and whether or not the hooker ripped me off…
Sometimes?

@awk So jealous.
@awk yeah, I’m a pro mapper, too. We should have a contest! An Olympics of slumber! A grand championship of the Snooze!
@UncleVinny What does being a professional cartographer have to do with it?
@awk mapper, napper, slapper? What’s the difference between friends and autocorrect? Let’s have a contest in all of them!!!
@UncleVinny
okay I’ll get ready for the slapper contest

@awk That’s cool. I fell asleep during a Weezer concert, so maybe I’m an expert, too. Shit, what’s that drummer doing way up there?
Last time I was in a hotel, I slept for 10 hours. It was wonderful.
I sleep in the at least 100 nights a year. The only thing worse than sleeping in a hotel is eating the hotel breakfast.
@wmbarr Long line at the waffle iron?
Depends on the quality (and quantity) of wine at dinner.
Depends on the bed. If it’s a nice bed, sure. If it’s hard as a rock or there are questionable stains on the comforter, not so much…

@moonhat My 72 year old roommate sleeps 10-12 hours a day. It doesn’t have to be that way. Sleep is love.
@moonhat WHAT THE FUCK. THAT GIF. I’M DEAD FROM CUTE.

@Fuzzalini well shit… i must be damn near indestructible by now!

@Dweezle I bring my own pillow too, but that’s just because I love my pillow, not that I need a lot or anything.

I just want to point out the fact that today’s post totally missed a perfect opportunity to reference the classic 90s R&B hit “Comforter” by Shai.
Most hotel beds are too hard to be comfortable, but I’m usually too tired to notice until the morning when my shoulders and back hurt.
I always sleep horribly in beds that aren’t my own. Not sure if it’s being somewhere I’m not familiar with, or a comfort thing.
I sleep better because of the whole “100 miles away from stuff that needs to be done.” But if on my own for business I have to have TV on before I can drift off because the lack of hubby and kid’s presence makes it way too quiet and lonely.
ZzzQuil and Valerian Root go a long way if you are having issues. Also not thinking about poorly cleaned linens or possible bed bugs too help.
I don’t sleep well. A hotel doesn’t do much to make that better or worse.
