@communist Yeah. I’m still butt hurt about that. They should have a water resistant “sport” model without a headphone jack for people who drop their phones in toilets and a “practical” model for normal people who don’t take their phones white water rafting, but still like using cheap accessories that use a 3.5mm jack.
Edit: Oh and no Miracast ability on a Pixel? You MUST use chromecast? Why, bruh? Why…
@danpritts Proprietary. There are competing standards for each model.
The youngest seems to use my lap and tries to complete some kind of circuit by continually licking my face. The oldest charges only when on her back at the junction of a floor and wall. And the middle dog’s charging portal is in the middle of the kitchen floor. That portal is only active when cooking dinner for maximum hazard. She is teaching the youngest dog to also use this charging portal, so it seems to be an adaptable feature.
Their charge curve is all out of whack, too. It seems like they go from 100% to sleep mode in just a second.
So, I’m in my 40s and pretty cranky like an old man
My craftsman drill ok - my electric toothbrush ok -
Does it really tax someone’s existence to plug something in once a day?
My rant is exacerbated by all these apps that turn up the heat - turn on the lights - preheat the oven
WTF - is our goal to become the weak of body species that saved Captain Pike’s life ?
@meh427 For me the desire to be able to turn on the lights remotely is for when I’ve been out with friends later than expected, so I don’t have to cross the living room in the dark to turn on a lamp. Or the summertime when I sit outside in my back yard reading till the last dregs of sunlight, then have to climb the stairs to the living area in the dark as the switch is at the top (this is the main use I’ve gotten from my cell phone flashlight). Also the ability to control the lights when I’m out of town.
@meh427 i agree with @moondrake - the point of voice activated lights is not so i can be as lazy as possible (although it is nice to be able to read in bed or watch something with a lamp on and not have to get out from under the covers to turn it off, and it is nice to be able to turn the tree off and on at xmastime without crawling around under it to plug and unplug each time) but for some of us is actually a real convenience with additional safety benefits. in my apartment for instance, aside from the bathroom there aren’t any light switches. there are also hardly any outlets. so rather than wander into the house in the dark and then flailing my arms around looking for a pull string, or moving furniture to access switches on cords, i simply ask alexa to turn on the lights. could we live without it? obviously, sure. but it really does make a big difference in our situation which is more than just “i don’t want to flip a switch.”
I chose other. I see wireless charging as more of a gimmick than anything else (like 3D, 4k, and HDR in TV’s). They fact that you just have to run a wire to a pad instead of your phone (and one more thing that can break) isn’t a massive improvement.
That said, if these charging pads became more ubiquitous, they have potential. Imagine if they were built into your desk at work or in a restaurant. But I don’t think that is going to be seen any time in the future.
@Nitewatch Actually, there are a few Starbucks locations that have wireless chagrining built into tables. Although for some dumb reason they used the weird Duracell Powermat which is not compatible with Qi Wireless (Without a doubt the real standard).
@Nitewatch i believe this is actually going to be (or already is?) a feature of some newer ikea furniture. i was going to say the same as you though - my partner uses ‘wireless charging’ for his phone, but since the pad uses the same usb slot in our hub that his phone’s charging cable would, and it’s not any longer, and nothing else uses that charging pad…it’s kind of silly.
I got the iPhone 8 Plus, which has wireless charging, but I haven’t gotten a Qi pad for it yet. Also, I guess my Apple Watch technically charges wirelessly.
I have multiple products (none affiliated with the incomplete fruit) which use recharge wirelessly.
It’s wireless, but it only charges when you rub it.
(Wait, what were you thinking?!)
Used to with a Samsung phone and a Nexus, but for some reason they didn’t include it in the Pixel.
@medz they also advertised having a headphone jack in the pixel 1, then removing it in the pixel 2

@medz wait, what? I hadn’t used Miracast since I got mine. Welp, thanks for saving me a bunch of frustration trying to get that to work.
/image sonic care
@Ignorant ugh, voted no then remembered the knockoff soniccare I bought here wirelessly charges after seeing this.
@devyanks90 do things with no wires but contact points count? Like ooma phone handset or my electric shaver?
@medz I’d say no, that’s basically a wire when contact is made.
@medz Nope, those are wires. Just wires that are very easy to unplug.
Yes, lots of things. Phone, watch, toothbrush, speakers, and dogs to name a few.
@djslack do the dogs use Qi, Powermat, or something proprietary?

@djslack I’d guess sleep mode is disabled, say from 5am-7am? Just like my last place there is a neighborhood dog that is defective in this way.
keocera hydro air is my kitchen timer and it charges wirelessly via the dead PMA standard
my moto 360 gen 1 smartwatch charges via normal Qi wireless charging

@meh427 Nope, the goal is to become the people of Wall-E.

@mitchellhayes Wireless chagrining at Starbucks? No doubt related to the buyer’s remorse from the overpriced mediocre coffee.

I have a couple sets of those Duracell power banks with power mats. I use them all the time. And a BEM speaker too.
Oh, I mis-answered. I totally forgot that I have several things that charge solarly:
My Eco-Drive watch,
Two LED lights on my shed,
And my 66 pound black mutt, Murphy. Sometimes he overcharges and lies in the sun panting.
@sligett Me, too, I have lots of solar lights.
My phone (and watch, actually), but the kid thing is really equally true.
Why can’t they make a Qi compatible "personal massager’?
