I’ve never had to use my crappy old dash cam as evidence following an accident, but I’ve had several entire minutes of fun, maybe even a couple of hours, using it to create time lapse videos of trips. Of course, if it’s in time lapse mode, it’s not going to be particularly useful in the event that I need it. Maybe I need another one?
Edit: I just remembered I already have three more, all purchased from meh, and only one has ever been in my vehicle.
I was shopping for a dash cam on black Friday, year before last. My buddy asked why I thought I needed one. I told him that nobody really needs one until they need one. I bought one a few days later, and he gave me a subtle eye roll.
He gets sideswiped a week or so later and the other party lies to their insurance and says it’s his fault. They had the same insurance company, which just declared no fault and raised both of their premiums. He calls me and immediately says “Fuck You!” and I’m like, what did I do? “The insurance company said they could prove fault if I had dash cam footage.”
I haven’t actually needed it in the year and a half I’ve had it. But I have saved some really nice scenic clips/photos.
Yep. This idiot in front of me came up to a stop sign but was too far to the left and was blocking the other oncoming lane so he checked his left mirror, and backed up into me! He didn’t see me because I actually know how to drive on the correct side of the road. Then later he refused to answer his phone when his insurance company called which means they couldn’t confirm what happened. Dashcam (bought on meh a couple years ago) video showed his tag, showed what happened and saved the day.
I used to just use one for long drives but bought a nice one a few months ago with parking mode that I leave in place 24/7. It’s pretty small and I tucked the cable into the headliner so it isn’t too easy to see from outside the car.
I was side-swiped by a tri-axle truck at an intersection when he pulled into my lane and cut me off. The driver jumped out and angrily blamed the accident entirely on me. Luckily, my dashcam was rolling. His insurance paid to fix my car (and a rental) and he was cited for lying to the police. The camera was a wonderful investment.
Some of the drivers will pull in front of you because they think you are going to fast and they need to slow you down.
Some of the drivers will stop (even though they have the right of way) to left someone go in front of them.
Some of the drivers drive 4 across (pacing) on a 4 lane freeway.
Some of the drivers won’t even look as they change lanes and others believe that if they put on a turn blinker the person int he other lane needs to stop and left them over.
Do I need to say any more? Dash cams are definitely needed here.
I’ve wanted one for a long time but I finally pushed myself to get one (Viofo A119 V3) after watching some dash cam footage on Reddit.
The footage showed the dash cam driver we going through a green light and getting t-boned by a red light runner. The red light runner and a “witness” told the police that the dash cam driver ran the red light. Dash cam driver showed police the footage when he was still in the hospital and was saved.
I eventually want to get one that I can save the video to my phone through the app and dual camera setup but they’re expensive for a good one like Blackvue and Thinkware.
Do I have an ass cam. No but if I bend over and spread my cheeks, I can see for miles. Ops-sorry-thought you said ass cam rather than Dash cam. Never mind.
i cant vote
@jmoor783 convicted felon?
The suction cup attachment lasts about 3 months then needs replacing.
Sorry but you are not going to hear me say suka blyat.
@yakkoTDI
СУКА БЛЯТЬ!!!
I got the license plate of the guy who hit my car, and kept on driving. Gave a copy to the police and insurance. More than paid for itself than.
Yes. In a box. Hasn’t done much for me in there.
@warpedrotors I have several in boxes. Trying to decide if I should buy one more.
@sammydog01 @warpedrotors Only if you think you need another box.
@sammydog01 I have another one in a drawer. Maybe you need a drawer one.
Maybe? I’m thinking of buying today’s deal but I need more feedback on the quality.
I have a photographic memory. Sometimes, I really wish I didn’t, especially when everyone ages.

ITT: people with dash cams that haven’t installed them yet.
I have (had?) one, but I haven’t seen it in two years. Not sure if it’s lost in a box somewhere, or if it never made it through the last move.
I don’t, but I’m about to.
One in each of my cars. I treat it as insurance – hopefully, it’s never needed, but if it is, it’s a good thing it’s there.
I did buy ones with a rear view camera too, though, so they also work as a backup cam.

@moonhat is to blame!

Might do it… though I hate the wire
I have one I got in my Irk, but it’s still in the box.
I have a dash cam. I unplugged it once and forgot to plug it back in.
Fortunately that hasn’t bit me in the butt yet.
That would require having a car
I don’t, but I plan to get one whenever I start making more than one car trip per week.
Unfortunately, dash cam use is not allowed at my work location (on a Naval base). I do have one, it’s just under the arm-rest, not used. :-\

I live near Seattle -

@FearTheNoFear I have that viofo in each of my cars. If anything weird starts happening with yours, check for a firmware update
I really don’t like driving without a dashcam. It just feels safer to have one.
Very useful for getting video of meteorites.

I use mine for taking video on the track
