I agree, I have so much reverence for heroes like that. I suspect that signing petitions hasn’t earned me any respect.
Seems these Florida teens are on track to make positive changes as well, and make me feel guilty for not doing something sooner.
@kdemo On the other hand all they’ll accomplish is to mark the potential troublemakers for marginalization and society will march along as it has since the boomers sold out the New Deal.
Crap, I forgot to put in a shameless plug!!! I also use AmazonSmile when buying crap at Amazon. A relative has a non-profit called “Distributing Dignity” that provides interview clothes to homeless women. Now whenever I make a stupid buying decision while on-line shopping out of boredom, I can comfort myself that a few pennies of the purchase are going to charity, as well as fueling Jeff B’s plan for world conquest!
I think mostly what I do only touches a tiny, itty bitty corner of the world. No earth shattering acts. A cat here or there, a homeless student into shelter with a meal plan (last term got one of my students into the dorms with a meal plan for the last 10 days of the term when I learned he was living in his truck), a couple of schools and orphanages in Cambodia (that ngo is still going strong but I got lucky and a foundation is now funding it so hardly any more work on my part), which reminds me I need to get my shit together to get that dog graduation gown going for the service dog of the vet and find that thread and revive it…
I figure if a lot of people each tried to do something here or there together we’d add up to a lot of “goodness” even if we aren’t, individually, one of the people who manage to do big things and change the world.
I go there every day. All you have to do is click on one or more of the causes they have listed. It costs nothing and they don’t bother you with emails unless you ask them to.
They also sell items and a portion of the sale is donated. They even tell you much goes to the cause.
Every correct answer works to send rice to the hungry through the United Nations World Food Program. There are a bunch of different quiz topics, from vocabulary or grammar, to chemistry, geography, famous paintings, math, and many more.
Warning, the questions get harder as you go.
I would just like to know who has to count the rice grains.
Yeah

@cranky1950 - There is such a thing as too much optimism, you know? Cheer down!
I often wonder what would happen if I decide to use my powers for good, instead of evil. But then… Nawww.
@shahnm Refrigerating batteries is the good.
Yeah. I’m extra nice to the customer service people with whom I interact. That’s the best the world is getting from me right now.
@DaveInSoCal and we thank you. Dealing with nasty people is super depressing.
Nope.
Y
@f00l Y not?
@f00l Because we like you! M . O . U . S . EEEEEEEEEE!
@ELUNO
Yes Y?
@cranky1950
I’m just so fucking awesome. Right?
@f00l But of course.
Whenever I wonder that, I donate to a local charity. It seems to work out for me and them.
I try to do good, but fall woefully short of my expectations.
I am the greatest good this world is ever gonna get.
If I’m in the money, I kick in a Kiva donation (you know there’s a Team Meh, eh?) If not, I’ll do a casserole or whatever for the church.
And I’ve done a couple Kickstarter things too, I think that counts!

@Kidsandliz
/youtube think local my name is earl
@Kidsandliz Small kindnesses matter. Have you heard the Starfish Story?
@moondrake yes
I just ordered a box of stuff for donation to Goodwill. Does that count? (I’m keeping the mints.)
I suspect that if you only manage to do no harm, you are probably doing better than most.
Or did you mean this?
