I’m so much of a pessimist that I never look at something as an opportunity. I always think about the worst case scenario on everything. Causes huge anxiety issues.
@cenglandO I too am a pessimist (and occasionally a realist) but you have to admit you weren’t a pessimist when you became a part of the Kickstarter program. Unless you thought it would fail and the money you spent would be wasted. But it turns out it wasn’t. Wasn’t that a somewhat pleasant surprise?
@alphapeaches Thanks for that video. I have some similar experiences as her but some differences too.
Her anxiety started after High School but mine started around age 13 – I’m 52 now. She gets confused and doesn’t understand people around her and I don’t have that problem. She cannot have normal conversations with people and I can. I talk with people all the time and don’t seem to have an issue with that. I don’t like public speaking though as I’m always worried of making a mistake or sounding stupid. I don’t like the sound of my own voice so I’m a little self conscious about that too.
She hates herself. Me too. I wish I was never born but now that I’m here, I’m trying to deal with this horrible life as best I can.
Doesn’t want to leave the house. I have a major issue with leaving and take medicine just to go grocery shopping. Without it, I have issues going out in public to do simple things like getting my hair cut. I have issues sitting there not being able to move. I think about all the things that could go wrong such as me needing to use the bathroom in the middle of the cut.
Everyone else is normal. I think this way too. All my friends and family are constantly going out to dinner and going on vacations away from home. I’ll never be able to do that. Any friends or family that wants a visit with me has to come to my house for the visit because I’m not going to theirs.
When she went to conventions, she just stayed in her room. That is what I would do too. I don’t like being around large groups of people and would rather be by myself.
@WTFsunshine I viewed it as a small thank you gift to the person who started woot, which gave me a lot of enjoyment. I’m glad meh is here, but the forums are still nowhere near as diverse and lively as woot’s were. I used to have to check woot several times a day to keep up with topics I was interested in, and there were usually at least a half dozen, often more. I can leave meh for days and not feel as if I’ve missed anything. I enjoy meh, but I still very much miss the old woot community.
By nature, I’m more of an INTP than anything else. However, I’ve learned that in many situations there is value (to me) to play the roles of ENFP, INFP or ENTP.
I consider myself to be optimistically pessimistic. It seems that the way things’ are going on in this world it’s better to run in circles to keep up with the glasses at all anymore. If you can make sense out of what I just said your doing much better than me. Now to all of you wonderful people in the path of Irma’s my heart and prayers are truly with you. Please stay safe, drive smart and don’t opt out for the old hurricane party type that say I’m just gonna wait it out, there is no waiting it out anymore. Just ask the thousand’s of us in Southeast Texas and Louisiana. The storm’s as we all know have become more ferocious and dangerous than any other time since records have been kept. I know by experience that it’s not just the over 100 mph winds or the flooding because there is so much more to these systems than that. @Old Cat Lady, you have deeply impacted my spirit with your thoughtful words during Harvey and I pray you did get some of those bottles of water you spoke of. I could have never dreamed that within such a short distance of time you would really need them. The devastation is unbelievable here and all the other counties involved. I just want you and everyone else who is in the path of this storm to know you’re in our prayers and help is already on it’s way.GOD BLESS YOU ALL. Peace ✌ out.
@hotwheels53 I’m in Florida and I’m waiting it out. Don’t have any other place to go so there’s no other option for me. At least I don’t live on the coast – I’m about 20 miles inland. That should provide some buffer. I think I’m 11 feet above sea level so as long as the water doesn’t go 11 feet high, my house should be safe.
I would board up the windows but have no way to get wood home or a room to store it when the storm is over. We don’t have basements in Florida.
@RiotDemon I’m in Clay county, Orange Park area. I do have a friend with a truck but I’m the kind of person to never ask anyone for help. If I owned a truck I would hate it if all my friends kept calling me to help them every time they needed to move something so I’m not going to do that to anyone else.
I could just rent the truck from Home depot for an hour but I still have the issue of not having a location for the wood after the storm is over.
@cengland0 I understand not wanting to ask for help, but people during storms are way more understanding. Hopefully since you’re father north, the storm will slow down by the time it gets to you.
@cengland0 I have a very small home and there are things I just have to be wasteful with for lack of storage. I donate between uses and repurchase at need. I’d rather do that than do without or be cramped up trying to store things. If you’ve got no place to store it between storms, but you need it for each storm, then it seems you may need to reconcile yourself to purchasing new materials each time and donating them after. Or buying storage. I don’t know how big these things are, I live as far from hurricane country as you pretty much can. But there are some pretty affordable yard storage options available. I have three giant deck boxes where I winter all my yard cushions, and grill things, and I wrap my lawn and deck furniture with tarps.
@RiotDemon Regarding asking for help, during hurricane Matthew, the friend with the Truck actually called me up to ask if he could borrow my generator. Isn’t that crazy? I need it myself during a natural disaster. If he wants it during any other time of the year, no problem. But not during a hurricane. Sheesh.
@moondrake I don’t have the stomach to be wasteful. I could be considered a quazi-hoarder because I never throw anything away because I might need it again later. I hate paying for the same thing over again.
Regarding size, I have 13 windows and if I use 1/2" plywood, that’s 6 1/2" of wood that needs to be stacked along a wall. Not counting the width and length of the wood which could be 6 feet in some cases.
I just want you to be safe, my friend. Now I want one of these sheds to store my art fair things at the end of the driveway so I don’t have to wrestle them out of the “prohibition closet” and up the stairs.
@cengland0 best to invest in some shutters perhaps. I have shutters for seven windows and two sliders stacked standing in a space that’s maybe 1.5’x1.5’x8’
Or accordion shutters. Those stay on your windows constantly.
I can only imagine asking to borrow someone’s generator if I knew they had power after the storm, and I didn’t.
@RiotDemon If it can be moved, it’s not permanent, at least that’s how our zoning laws go. You have to pull a permit here for permanent stuff, too, but my 12’ x 20’ steel carport didn’t count because it’s bolted to the concrete and could be moved (by Superman or the Hulk). Walmart has affordable steel sheds as well, much bigger ones. I’m just fishing for a solution. There’s always this: http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/rooms-and-spaces/bedroom/how-to-build-a-hurricane-shutter-bed
@moondrake I live in a deed restricted community and we cannot have sheds. They might be considering an amendment to the restrictions to allow them but they are considering making them strict such as being attached to the house and match the same style, material, and color as the house. Cannot be taller than 6 feet to the peak of the roof.
@RiotDemon I like the shutter idea and I’d go for it but 8 of the 13 windows are bay windows. On the 45 degree angle, there isn’t enough room for an open shutter on the outside for one window and definitely not two.
I could probably install a persiana (probably spelled wrong but it’s a word I learned while living in Italy). Makes the inside look like crap though.
@cengland0 I will definitely be praying hard for you. I’m sorry that you couldn’t get out. I was watching the news this morning about the traffic trying to go north and it was horrible. People running out of gas while sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. I saw some people filling up their cars and they also had about 8-10 large gas can’s they were filing at the same time. People who are leaving should fill their cars, trucks, SUVs’ ect…, and maybe one two cans then leave some for the next person. I heard that the government is dropping the rules as far as truck drivers go that are hauling fuel so the holding tanks at the stations can be replenished . People ask why didn’t they evacuate Houston and surrounding areas, all they have to do is look at the traffic trying to get out of Florida. Gives me chills just to think about it I also know what you mean about not being able to find plywood or lumber of any kind, it’s on short supply everywhere. We don’t have storm cellar’s here either kinda defeats the purpose. I am about 115 miles from the coast and that didn’t seem to matter in this monster we just road out. Please if you live in a 2 story house or even a one story make sure you have a cutting tool to take and cut thru the roof in case you have to get up on it. Please stay safe and I wish you the best through this hurricane . Peace ✌ out my friend and GOD BLESS!
@cengland0 I get the idea that you don’t want to pay for the same thing twice, but would you rather pay for a few pieces of plywood or 13 windows, carpet/flooring, dry wall repair and furniture after each storm? Given where you are, that’s a distinct possibility and the insurance company will only carry you so far, if at all.
You might be thinking “it’s a liquid that doesn’t compress much, so, I should be dealing with probably mililiters” or something like that. What you want are grams.
Why is everyone staring at their water glasses instead of looking at the menu? The waiter’s going to be back before you know it, and I’m going to be the only one that knows what she wants to order.
@TrickyKitty “The waiter’s going to be back before you know it…” So I see you are an optimist. I’m a pessimist. I have no expectation of the waiter’s return, so I get up and refill my own water.
I see myself as an optimist on some days, pessimist on others. I’ve yet to be disappointed by the fact that there is a new post on meh.com. There are a number of reasons why a deal could be considered disappointing: too pricey, it’s clothing, it’s a blender, the list goes on. Hell, I’ve frequented Meh during my college years (this is my third), and I’ve barely bought anything. Not to say i’m not happy with what I have purchased. That includes an 808 Bluetooth speaker, a Chromebook, and a portable turntable, all of which still see use.
For all the deals that weren’t/may not be good enough for me, the value I’ve gotten through Meh exceeds what I’ve paid for in money. Where Meh.com shines is in its presentation. Presentation, what something looks like, how it can make people feel, is what is most important. Meh is humorous, witty, and a little different every day. In a world where our lives are planned in 7 day increments, something ever changing, novel, and unpredictable can serve as a gentle reminder to slow down, take in our surroundings, and feel the support our world has to offer us. Now, there is absolutely no reason for me to purchase a FUL 3-piece Hardside Luggage set for $120 dollars, but the article written on the FUL 3-piece Hardside Luggage set, helped me reflect on my attitude, encouraged me to write to an unknown audience, and also gave me something to do while my three meat pizza cooked for 17 minutes.
Realist
@katbyter exactly. The glass isn’t half full or empty. It’s half a glass.
@j8048188 the glass is always full. Just some of it is full of air.
The glass is neither half full or half empty, its twice as large as it needs to be.
@katbyter agree! No point in being anything but realistic regarding life
“Expect the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be surprised.”
@awk
Or
“Expect the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be stoooopid.”
I’m so much of a pessimist that I never look at something as an opportunity. I always think about the worst case scenario on everything. Causes huge anxiety issues.
@cengland0 In case you’ve never heard of Tessa Violet, she’s got some cool music but also much more where she just talks about life. Example:
@cenglandO I too am a pessimist (and occasionally a realist) but you have to admit you weren’t a pessimist when you became a part of the Kickstarter program. Unless you thought it would fail and the money you spent would be wasted. But it turns out it wasn’t. Wasn’t that a somewhat pleasant surprise?
@WTFsunshine The kickstarter was $1 (I think) and I never expected to receive anything in return for it.
@alphapeaches Thanks for that video. I have some similar experiences as her but some differences too.

I like being a pessimist because on the rare occasion that something good happens I’m pleasantly surprised.
I’m always optimistic that something bad will happen. Fortunately, I’m prepared for a small number of possible events
I can never keep my glasses clean.
So I’m a little foggy on all this.
@2many2no “foggy” - I see what you did there!
@KillSw1tch
/giphy Engage
@2many2no that is just…creepy.
I make sure to lower my expectations about everything, always, and then I’m optimistic it’ll be a little better than expected.
@dave I prefer to think of it as pleasantly surprised.
The damn glass has beer in it; not water.
@TheCO2 - You ARE an optimist!
Had to look up ENFP -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ENFP
Yeah, that’s me
By nature, I’m more of an INTP than anything else. However, I’ve learned that in many situations there is value (to me) to play the roles of ENFP, INFP or ENTP.
@baqui63 I agree. I’m am ENTP but I skew to INTP and INTJ on occasion. I’m more fluid than the test suggests
The glass is neither half empty nor half full, it just has a safety factor of 2.
I consider myself to be optimistically pessimistic. It seems that the way things’ are going on in this world it’s better to run in circles to keep up with the glasses at all anymore. @cengland0 Donate it to Habitats for Humanity.
@moondrake I would need it again for the next storm.
@cengland0 I understand not wanting to ask for help, but people during storms are way more understanding. Hopefully since you’re father north, the storm will slow down by the time it gets to you.

@cengland0 How about this?
Keter Duotech High Store Vertical Storage Shed
Or this?
Keter Manor 4’ x 6’ Resin Storage Shed, All-Weather Plastic Outdoor Storage, Gray/White
I just want you to be safe, my friend. Now I want one of these sheds to store my art fair things at the end of the driveway so I don’t have to wrestle them out of the “prohibition closet” and up the stairs.

@moondrake plastic storage sheds fly away in storms here. I lost mine and it wasn’t that bad of a storm.
Around here to install a permanent outdoor shed, you need permits.
If you are a DIY type, this would be cool: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Hopkins-Peak-Roof-Shed-Kit/21987229

I like to think even though the glass may be half empty, the glass can always be filled again.
Of course, I have a friend who says the glass is always half empty & someone took a dump in it, so there’s that line of thinking as well.
If I wasn’t an optimist, would I be shopping HERE?!?
You might be thinking “it’s a liquid that doesn’t compress much, so, I should be dealing with probably mililiters” or something like that. What you want are grams.
Trust me. Grams.
But what does it matter, somebody’s going to accidentally break the glass anyways.
Why isn’t meh an option?
I am an optimist with a healthy dose of reality.
I am an optometrist. I can finally answer a Meh poll honestly.
So I see!
Physicist.*
https://what-if.xkcd.com/6/
*(Not actually a physicist. I just don’t have the math for it.)
@dannybeans I was going to post this, but since you did I won’t.
Pessimism always. That way when things go to shit you won’t be surprised. Optimists deal with disappointment for a reason.
I’m not a pessimist, I’m an optometrist.
Almost… I’m an ENTP
I just consider myself an asshole. Where does that fall on the continuum?
@mfladd
We knew.
No pragmatist option?

@ThomasF Did you guys go into the future and steal Woot’s poll? Shame on you.
@sammydog01
Let’s blame @RiotDemon.
@f00l Sounds like a plan.
@sammydog01 I am many things, but a thief is not one.
@ThomasF
But you ARE a cheater though.
@gumtreertmug Only when it’s already part of a game. And when it’s cheating metaphysical forces. Especially when it’s metaphysical forces.
@f00l what was that?
