Do these exist anymore?
4years ago, when my nephew was…10…11…ish… not really ready for a phone yet, but “all the other kids” etc…
I got him a (refurbed) Samsung galaxy Player for Christmas.
(think Ipod Touch, Did 90% of what the Iphone did, just no cellular radio)
like these…

i got his from woot too, before the Amazon acquizition…
now, his little sister is the same age… is there a modern equivalent?
something small, portable, she could watch videos, listen to music, maybe msg her friends… (she currently gets her mom’s phone a few hours a week to txt with her friends… Nephew had the same arrangement at that age)
I prefer Android over apple, she already has her own personal Chromebook, and their school is a google school. they use School issued Chromebooks for their school work, all the Gsuite office-y apps, etc.

These days people just buy a cellphone and don’t pay for service on it.

I concur with @chellemonkey. Cheap android phones are plentiful. Android phone without SIM card and service is exactly what you describe.
I have an old galaxy player too, though I stopped using it once I got my current phone and use my old phone for music now instead, the player was still on like android 4.3 and was pretty slow
SanDisk Clip
@2many2no
Do the sandisk mp3 players have a line in port? IE can they record?
If so, can the play back recorded speech (or play spoken word stuff such as audiobooks) at a user controlled playback rate?
@f00l Not sure, but I don’t think so. I think they are just media players, mp3 and similar files. They usually have a SD slot for expandable memory, so whatever you load on there.
How about a small kindle?
My cousin and his wife give their kids their previous generation phones whenever they upgrade. The apps and wifi portion of the phone works without having a SIM inserted(or service being activated for Verizon), so it is basically as you describe. If an old phone seems tacky to your sensibilities, as a gift, a cheap android phone from Walmart could be had for $40 or so, with a basic camera and basic amounts of memory and storage, with the benefit that it is running the newest version of android, and the youngster will get to peel the fresh film off the phone face and open the box and all that. Otherwise, I think Apple still offers iPod touch, but I am not sure if the Galaxy player still exists, since adding the cellular radios is pretty cheap, and you can use a phone without service as a mini tablet.
Combo Mp3/vid players are all over the amazon lightning deals every day right now.
Check in electronics.
Read reviews, some of them are a pain to use. Others are good.
Prices run $15-$30 or so.
fully aware of using an old phone w/o service…
unfortunately, the only old phones i have on hand currently are a relatively recent flip phone, with a wonky battery, and my OG Droid… which 1) i’m not giving up,
2) is slow AF to try and use anything.
@earlyre
If you would like to use an old phone but simply don’t have one lying around probably pick something half decent three or four years old off of swappa or eBay or the Amazon warehouse for not too much money
