Do jars of lupini beans go bad relatively quickly after opening?
1It doesn’t say use within 2 weeks of opening on the jar, but it also doesn’t mention refrigerating them after opening. The smell is making me a little suspicious, but I really want to eat some.
edit: they’ve been open for over a month.

Never had heard of those before

“The rest of the beans can be kept in an air-tight container for 2 or 3 weeks in the refrigerator.” It’s assuming you prepared them yourself so idk if it applies to jarred ones.
@msklzannie I was watching a video yesterday and they were baking cookies. In the ingredients there was an allergy warning about lupine. I’m like, wtf is that? Apparently they turn it into flour sometimes. Its a legume similar to peanuts so people allergic to peanuts might be allergic to lupine as well.
@msklzannie @RiotDemon So much tastier than peanuts.
Go with your nose.
A lot of beans don’t seem to stay well very long after opening imo. I generally toss them after a few days in the fridge. Like Riot said… go with your nose.
If you didn’t refrigerate them after they were opened, yes, they will go bad quickly.
Canned/jarred foods are only protected from bacterial growth when sealed under vacuum after canning. The environment inside the jar was made sterile by boiling and held sealed by the vacuum. Once you crack that seal you need to use the refrigerator for preservation as bacteria will have entered the jar and begun to feed. At room temp they will just take over very quickly. This is why the lids have the little pop feature so you can verify that they are properly sealed and under vacuum inside.
Edit: just saw the over a month part so disregard the refrigerator part, but I’m leaving it for science. For non processed foods a week in the fridge is stretching it. A month, they’re past due for sure. The only reason a lot of processed foods will last is they are loaded with preservatives.
Gross. Compost them now
@CaptAmehrican Not that I do it intentionally, but I sure do feel far less awful about doing dumb stuff that wastes food now that I have a compost bin.
@CaptAmehrican @djslack @lseeber @RiotDemon @msklzannie They do have sodium benzoate in them, but fine- I’ll throw them away. Thanks, I’m not always the best at determining what to do in these situations.
@UncleVinny- why’d you ruin my lupini?
I don’t think it’s worth running the risk. They’re cheap enough not to chance it
@capguncowboy yeah, I’m buying a new jar today. It still makes me sad to throw them out.
If they are not crawling around in the jar, eat 'em.
What could go wrong?
@daveinwarsh - Yeah! Clear out that colon!
