@cdkplankton If you sign up for vmp anything else you buy that month ships for free! It's great for cheap impulse buys like this where the shipping would kill it.
@unixrab The dark side being the temptation of buying things you normally wouldn't because you don't have to pay shipping, right? I tend to think of it as a bonus for both me and Meh. They get more sales and I get stuff for cheap.
I'm tempted to buy it, even though I really don't need it. I think the spider might make a cool centerpiece for an art project that I might work on later, but yeah, no, I don't think I can justify it.
If it's still available in the morning when I'm not so tired, I would give it more time, however it's not something that I think I'm going to buy tonight. I've said that a few times here on Meh, and I always buy it, but you never know..
@rlesueurPermission to buy: - You're really a child at heart. - You wish you were really a child at heart. - You need this for the niece/nephew visit entertainment shelf. - They might be collector's items one day. - Finally, you can't think of any reason except the meh closet still has space.
Dinosaur poop? Dinosaur poop?! Dinosaur poo?!!! Since I've been called a dinosaur, if anyone runs short, I can provide free samples, but the shipping won't be free...
@unixrab I know!!! That's what's making it sooo hard for me to resist the temptation. But, I can't decide if my kids and my nephews would actually want them.
I'm 26. I purchased this to share with my 22-year-old sister. We're going to have lots of fun. For about an hour. She's a bio major and I think she'll enjoy having a spider and dino poop (even if it's bs... ds?). Also, one summer when I was working at the AMNH in NYC we took a trip to Sterling Mine in NJ. They have a huge collection of florescent rocks, some of which are from the mine. I have a piece of rock and now I'll have a UV lamp! No idea what I'm going to do with the gold kit... These deals are what you make of them. Turn meh into a-meh-zing!
Also, just checked an it's a UV pen. This means that you can write all over things (just make sure it doesn't cause a reaction and stain) and it only shows in the UV. Great for writing on walls. And everything else, really...
@Kerig3 It was really neat. Some of the exhibits were a little dated, but overall very informative and interesting. I was doing astro research at the time, but we were kind of grouped up with those studying geology at the museum... That made even going through their rock fields interesting. The geology people were oohing and ahhing over rocks and the astro people were randomly tapping rocks with hammers because we had no idea what we were doing. :-D
@primrosewater Thanks for sharing. I'll add it to my bucket list! What kind of astro reasearch, if I may ask? I'm a backyard amatuer myself and have much interest in the subject.
@Kerig3 I was working on looking for exoplanets with integrated field spectroscopy... Probably the most boring of any research project that I've worked on, but working in the museum and being able to walk through ANY DOOR I WANTED IN THE ENTIRE PLACE was delightful.
@primrosewater Bummer. Sorry. :-( Do you happen to have a link to a research web page? I would love to learn more about it. I geek-out over this kind of subject...seriously. I was pained when Kepler's reaction wheels failed since it was on its way to making unbeleivable discoveries. I'm old enough to remember being taught in grade school that our solar system was unique (as far as we knew) so the discovery of other planetary systems fascinates me with wonder!
@Kerig3 There's nothing relating to what I worked on... I think that branch sort of stopped once I gave my presentation at the end of the summer (to the public... that was interesting). It's sort of related to this project: http://www.amnh.org/our-research/physical-sciences/astrophysics/research/project-1640. The summer after I was at the AMNH, I worked at the Carnegie Insitute in DC. One of the lead scientists on the Kepler mission works there... A couple of others were looking forward to the data, as well. I can't imagine how they felt when things started to go wrong.
@primrosewater Thank you for sharing! I had hoped you didn't think I was trolling. :-) I've bookmarked the links to read later, but quickly found this video about Project 1640 on YouTube: I honestly got a chill down my spine when they're showing the method they're using for exoplanet detection and they showed another planetary system right there on the screen! What a fascinating field! It was just last weekend I was explaining to my brother how visable light observing is such a small sliver of today's astronomical research and how quickly our knowledge has grown in just the last few decades. Thanks again for the links and good luck with your future research!
@Kerig3 I tend not to worry about trolls. I always hope for the best. ;-) Visible light is probably one of the most time consuming and patience-straining ways to study the universe. I haven't seen this video before. I actually went to Palomar with them during an observing run. That was amazing. I had a key that not only opened my room in the monestary, but opened the doors to all of the telescopes there. The people were fantastic - my plane was delayed and became friends with one of the engineers when I needed to use his phone (everyone I knew was alseep or hiding in their rooms). I want Jean's job, but she already had an apprentice. :-( I'm glad that you've enjoyed the links! Good luck to you! Backyard astronomers make more discoveries than anyone realizes!
@Nate311 great idea! Because it gives you an excuse to order pizza. And thereby, incentive to you to encourage your daughter to play with educational toys. See how everybody wins?
Toys for tots, family centers, shelters - you get, what, 4 toys for $10? Make some kids day (even if it's messy) and donate them. You could otherwise wait until the holidays, or even better, pass them on to loved family and friends. I'm considering giving some to my neighbor's kids to make a mess in the garage (he is waaaay to proud of how clean it is). Anyway, in for one.
OMG, is it bad that I bought one of these for myself? Yeah, I'm 40. I feel less slightly less stupid about it, because I bought one for the niece & nephew and another to donate to Toys For Tots for the holidays. Grrrrrr Meh!!
@judahsma1 No, it's not. It's cheap entertainment that's a little different from the norm. Have fun digging out your dino poop. I'm sure my sister and I will. :-)
@primrosewater I cannot tell a lie. I really bought it because I want to pan for fake gold. I've always wanted to learn to pan for gold, and I guess this is a cheap way to do it instead of buying pay dirt and losing any real gold because I didn't know how to do it right :)
Well, my 6 year old will love this when it shows up. Wishing we had it before the snow hits in the morning; it's going to be a long weekend indoors. And now that I think about it, perhaps I need a couple more kits to part out for kids birthday presents over the next few months....
This is an amazing deal. My parents take care of my kids on Fridays, and my dad and 7-year old daughter do these kits together when she's not in school.
predominant-elegant-bucket... In for 3.... Awesome grandkids-nephews-kids gifts... Toys for Tots, tree angel, secret Santa, christmas gift exchange.... Thanks west coast for not buying them all up. Glad I woke up and checked Meh!
Sadly my youngest is now 18, but even when younger if it wasn't controlled by a joystick he wasn't interested. Hence I have many unopened science kits like these ready for the next garage sale.
Where did we go wrong with this generation that seems to lack even a smidgen of imagination? Hell, in my generation I could find at least a hundred ways to play with a stick! :-(
@Kerig3 My friend is a teacher and she said that the lack of imagination kids have now is amazing. She thinks it's becasue a lot of stories are fed to them (video/computer games, apps that lead you through things, etc), reducing the need to make things up in order to stay entertained. I tend to agree with her. If I had had a convenient way to entertain myself as a child and hadn't been required to make playing outside every day interesting (stew made from grass, dirt, and water, anyone?) I can see where I might have been less creative.
@primrosewater Yep, there is a big difference. But I also love technology, so I hope that this lack of imagination (and creativity) will somehow morph into a different positive that I cannot immediately see. But being a big science-loving geek myself I made sure to instill that passion into my own children. Interestingly, now that my eldest son is married with kids of his own I see him sharing those traits with his own kids, which eases my worries somewhat. It has kept me positive for the most part. :-)
@primrosewater I remember spending several hours trying to figure out how to set an anthill on fire with rubbing sticks together (we finally resorted to a magnifying glass).
In for 3, making 12 meh goody bags. Which, what the meh, we never got goody bags as a kid. This could start a goody bag escalation. Next year's parties will feature... speaker docks?
Oh my. This is the first time I've seen the word coprolite used on a daily deals website. Gold star for the write-up! There's a certain market at the right age group for disgusting science kits, so I get the concept. But I have to pass on it. I have a build your own radio controlled robot spider kit that's been waiting for me to work on it, sorry.
@donnameh if it's hex bug vex, take it back and get the slightly smaller pre built one. It took me at least four hours to build that thing and it kept coming apart at the mechanism's connection points, kids were really frustrated with it. I hope you have better luck...
@mehdaf wow, thanks for the reply, that's good to know. This one is called Spider-Bot and was made in the UK. I hope it goes well. Thanks for the comment though, I really appreciate it.
@donnameh is it this one that Adam from mythbusters has? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-vVblGlIMgw That thing is incredible. If not, well at least you now know what else is out there in the land of spider robots.
Thanks Mehers for saving me from myself, I nearly bought this last night but decided to sleep on it because I know I really shouldn't get it. Now my decision not to get it was done for me!
@elangomatt I was in the same boat & REALLY hoping it would sell out - thinking that UV lamp is never going to work UGH - so important that UV lamp!!! and I have such a huge collection of stuff I have to donate already...
All you youngsters may not know this yet but when you have kids, they start having birthday parties to go to almost every weekend. Yep. You end up swinging by Target or Wallyworld on the way and spending at least $15-$20 bucks per party on whatever crap that you can find. Lately it's been iTunes gift cards. Anyway this haul of Dino-poop, spider digging, panning for gold whatever kits will be divided up and go a long long way to save me some dough over the next few months.
Hey @snapster what about selling interesting, nice (but at bargain prices) toys enough time prior to christmas for slow shipping and to meet the deadlines of all the toys for tots programs (which can be as much as 2 weeks prior to christmas). Maybe make it a buy 3 and meh donates one to the greater dallas fort worth toy programs (since that metro area is huge) or then package them up and send them to some indian reservations, other towns with high poverty rates…?
@Kidsandliz I'd do that. I just "donated" a pair of gloves to a homeless shelter on some other ecommerce site. Pet smart asks me for a buck or an extra can of food in their brick and mortar store. I am sure it is a lot of work behind the scenes, so you gotta have staffing and programming in place.
I just got my bundle and I am impressed. For some reason I was expecting the boxes to be a lot smaller. Each one of these is nice enough to be a pretty decent gift for a niece or nephew. I should have bought more.
My Poop Dig Science Kit didn't seem to contain a digging tool and brush - just the solid brick and a leaflet about dinos and poop. Can anyone else confirm that their Poop Dig kit came with anything else? I had to break open the Spider Dig Kit for the birthday kid, more or less giving him an extra gift. Not the end of the world, but I was hoping to save that Spider Dig Kit for another gift....

What are you doing?
@Jetlag I am wondering why I stayed awake til midnight for rocks and dinosaur poop. Lol.
@mehlissa are you dinosaurry?
@labellyy Nah... Am more dinosaurry that I did not think up the fun word dinosaurry. ;)
@Jetlag Just took a piss. In bed now. Phone in hand. Replying to some guy that randomly asked what I'm doing.
Well, that's creative. Never would have guessed a deal like that.
There be gold in these hills!
The dig kits make huge messes.
@Nexar yeppers I will agree with that. Even outside on the patio table.
"Includes real spider."
@esjacobs yep. Nothing meh can do to make me gaking this. Terrifying
What the meh?
Cool prizes for my students.
@Rstoker OK, you just made me decide to buy. There's some sort of prize closet that parents are supposed to contribute to. Coolest Mom Ever!!!
If I had kids or niece / nephews of appropriare age I'd be all over this. Not enough explosive potential for me to be personally interested.
nope. no kids. no kid's toys. can't believe I could have went to bed an hour ago. you'd think I'd learn.
The dinosaur poop kit has a chocking hazard label priceless
@aaronhardman99 choking on poop may be the next population control method?
Meh. Golden Glowing Dinosaur Pooping a Spider?
@marvelljones Glowing Dinosaur Pooping a Golden Spider.
What the? Ok, meh. This is beyond meh. Though I'm still half tempted to buy this for some unknown reason
@SavvySapphire you get free shipping if you have vmp!
@unixrab what's vmp?
@cdkplankton If you sign up for vmp anything else you buy that month ships for free! It's great for cheap impulse buys like this where the shipping would kill it.
@cdkplankton what @purplepawprints sayd except.... she didn't tell you about the Dark Side of the VMP
@cdkplankton Here's more info on it. https://mediocre.com/vmp
@unixrab The dark side being the temptation of buying things you normally wouldn't because you don't have to pay shipping, right? I tend to think of it as a bonus for both me and Meh. They get more sales and I get stuff for cheap.
@PurplePawprints
2 sets + 2 kids = big mess
Stay strong, everybody!
@jqubed oh dear....
@jqubed Didn't last long.
So many nieces and nephews, so little time.
Love it bought it ! Not just for my kids. 10 bucks cheap cheap
@tentalces1349 ...that you know of... amirite!?
I'm tempted to buy it, even though I really don't need it. I think the spider might make a cool centerpiece for an art project that I might work on later, but yeah, no, I don't think I can justify it.
If it's still available in the morning when I'm not so tired, I would give it more time, however it's not something that I think I'm going to buy tonight. I've said that a few times here on Meh, and I always buy it, but you never know..
Sigh.
@juststephen what if you miss it? It's free shipping with VMP!!!
@unixrab I'm trying to think of it this way - it's something I didn't even know I wanted five minutes ago. That means I really don't need it.
@juststephen
@unixrab But, I really don't...
@juststephen very few people can resist the power of the Dark VMP
@unixrab I must!
@juststephen Not succumb...
@juststephen This isn't about need. It's about want. The spider scares the hell out of me, but I'm in for 3 anyway. Why? Because I have to LOL
@juststephen Sometimes I see ration and logic come over here just to die.
Are we allowed to buy it if I don't have any children to occupy with it?
@rlesueur We're always allowed to buy.
@rlesueur Do you have an inner child? I'm sure (s)he would love this deal.
@rlesueur Permission to buy:
- You're really a child at heart.
@eeterrific ha ha ha. Maybe you can work a deal and get some into the Fuku boxes.
Meh!
Was just throwing some similar toys away from when I was a kid... And now this? Meh!
@lakridserne Why not donate your unused toys to a charity like goodwill instead of putting them into the landfill?
@cengland0 Throw away = give it to the scouts yearly auction so they can earn some money on selling it in this case
It has been more than one month since last time Meh sold something I'd like to buy.
@mghostsoft hmmmmmm
Did I accidentally stumble in to Ollie's Bargain Outlet?
@Superjimtendo exactly what I was thinking.I can buy these at the "Everything $3.33 "store.
@wew 4 x $3.33 = $13.32 and no sales tax, so you're in right? This 10 buck meh is a bargain!
You had me at diorama.
@lordbowen Do you mean diarrhea? Like dinosaur diarrhea?
I wish my kids were still young enough to appreciate this.
@dude Pffftttt!! I'm 40 and I bought one for myself.
The kids will love these! Mehself included!
I can't decide if this is the worst thing ever or if it's the best. I haven't bit yet, but my resolve is weakening.
@PurplePawprints you get free shipping with VMP!!!
@unixrab I know!!! That's what's making it sooo hard for me to resist the temptation. But, I can't decide if my kids and my nephews would actually want them.
@PurplePawprints Pass
Speechless Meh.....

@unixrab Ha, thanks. We're science-oriented children at heart. No shame.
Also, just checked an it's a UV pen. This means that you can write all over things (just make sure it doesn't cause a reaction and stain) and it only shows in the UV. Great for writing on walls. And everything else, really...
@primrosewater I also bought two, just because my son and I both wanted the rocks.
Just in case anyone lives in the area and likes history/rocks... The mine is awesome, too. http://sterlinghillminingmuseum.org/warren/about.php (I think part of Zoolander was filmed there).
@primrosewater I saw a show on this mine once and would love to take a look should I ever be in thems parts!

My daughter loves these kinds of kits. Protip- use a pizza box to contain the plaster dust.

Screw kids, I want one of these for ME.
test. please ignore. my first image.
@wew ... Put a .jpg on the end of that link and it will magically come alive on this page wew.
@wew At the Creation Museum they sell dragon poop instead, because, you know, dragons were real also (and dragon merch is hot right now).
$20/hr for a teen baby sitter?
Wow. I felt ripped off paying ours $5/hr 3-4 years ago. We pretty much paid for her whole trip to Hawaii though. (Totally worth it.)
OMG, is it bad that I bought one of these for myself? Yeah, I'm 40. I feel less slightly less stupid about it, because I bought one for the niece & nephew and another to donate to Toys For Tots for the holidays. Grrrrrr Meh!!

Worth the $10 to excavate the spider, reassemble it, and leave it on your coworkers chair. And then do the same with the poop.
@judahsma1 A shitty idea.
predominant-elegant-bucket... In for 3.... Awesome grandkids-nephews-kids gifts... Toys for Tots, tree angel, secret Santa, christmas gift exchange.... Thanks west coast for not buying them all up. Glad I woke up and checked Meh!

I have a lot of neoprene cases in which these would go very nicely...

I've two co-workers with boys aged 7. I think they'll enjoy the wine time while the brats are occupied.

That thing is incredible. If not, well at least you now know what else is out there in the land of spider robots.
You had me at Dino poop. Perfect for the boys.
thick-calculating-cough
(I hope no one is coming down with anything)
I would have expected the dino poop to be in a bigger box.
disgusting-vital-beggar. Wow Meh, how did you know I bought this for my kid?
Purchased for my niece and nephew because Dinosaur Poop and VMP justification
No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
but if it wasn't sold out, I probably would.
This is going in the pile of summer entertainment along with the helicopter. That should take care of "I'm bored" for at least a day.
@UgaDogCH Here it is all about GameStop or Walmart gift cards. ugh
Anyone get tracking numbers yet?
@StrangerDanger Not I
@gti87 @StrangerDanger There has been a shipping delay due to bad weather:https://meh.com/forum/topics/shipping-delays-due-to-inclement-weather#54f0b7bb3eba0bd807c55db5
Not cool, Dr. Cool. My UV lamp doesn't work. Grrr.
@Hades I got a little plastic scraper and brush. That should keep a kid busy for hours.
@sammydog01 Thanks for letting me know. Maybe it fell out or something. Not a biggie.
boo my uv light didn't work and the poop kit didn't have any digging tools either.
but the kids liked it for all 5 seconds since i said they couldn't play with it indoors. maybe when it gets warmer.
