@Cerridwyn awesome, I did two smaller regional SciFi this past year, ConVival, end of Feb & RavenCon mid April. BTW RavenCon will be ONLY Official centennial of Science Fiction in 2026. Yes I am going & I will be helping setup & take down, Major discount on registration fee. Do they count as a “Vacation?”
@mycya4me worldcon is in Southern California next year. So in theory it could be a day trip but I’ll stay down there because I can. They’re having a pre-con meeting in a about a month I’m going to wander down there and see what I can do. I did registration at worldcon so I didn’t get to see as much of it as I might have wanted to but I actually enjoy doing registration
@cbatte Maui was kind of tainted for me. My sister had her wedding there and was a bridezilla. The Englishman used to say he’s the only human that’s been to Hawaii and hated it. He did not feel that way after our vacation last month.
You mean those five days I took at the end of August. Nope I slept and did spring cleaning to catch up from not taking any days up to that point all year (also I was exhausted)
I spent a week in the hospital with sepsis and e-coli. Fun times. I especially liked the constant interuptions to take blood or put back fluid into my ravaged body via a constant IV drip.
@therealjrn@yakkoTDI
Ouch! Guess that’s no comparison to being served a nice refreshing frozen cocktail while lounging on the beach front resort, huh…?
Thank you @tinamarie1974! “They” sent me home a little early but I was SO ready to go home!
There’s a thing now if you’re on Medicare you can ask to stay if you feel you’re not ready but I really just wanted to get back home to my own, comfy bed and off that insufferable IV. I slept mainly for a couple of days.
It probably was about a month before I was back in fighting form but I’m doing well now thanks!
Since I’m currently (mostly) retired it’s no longer a vacation from work. It’s just a vacation!
3 week cross country RV trip (with a young cousin from France) that went from central Alabama to San Francisco late June to mid July.
Went to Wisconsin for two weeks in end of August to visit friends.
Currently we are up in the Berkshires on a fall leaf trip with another couple for 10 days but fly home tomorrow.
@Lynnerizer
Thanks. I travel with a 40x Canon PNS compact for that reason. Hard to beat real glass for your zoom.
As for the rainbow, I wasn’t absolutely sure if the second one would show up or not when I first shot it.
That looks fantastic @chienfou! My brother and his wife travel around in an RV. They have tried to talk me into getting one too, but I’m just at the YouTube looking step.
@chienfou
Yeah sometimes you STILL need a REAL camera, you proved that here!
@therealjrn, GO FOR IT! Or maybe go WITH them once or twice to make sure RV living is for you, and THEN GO FOR IT! I think the biggest decision is how luxurious you want to go with your vacation wheels! 🛞
I spent too much money on my house and I took my nephew to Poland for two weeks in January. However, if I’m still living in the US next summer, I plan on spending a couple months somewhere much cooler than the desert.
Edit: I forgot that I went to New England for a week at the beginning of September.
I also spent a weekend in Vegas in February for the rock ‘n’ roll half marathon and went to San Diego in May. And I think I went to San Diego one other time because I remember getting snowed in at Big Bea.
@kittykat9180
At least you have one under your belt and you know how it feels! Even though you don’t care for running so much I bet it felt amazing when you finished it! And not just because you were done! Lol
@Lynnerizer I wish I could say yes. But man did my feet and legs hurt.
I thought I was clever booking a hotel next to the start line. But really I should’ve booked next to the finish. My friend and I had to practically crawl back to our hotel.
@kittykat9180
Aww… I hadn’t thought about THAT! You just reminded me of when I was a kid and I went away to a prep school for summer, my parents hoped I’d choose to stay there but it was more of a reform school for me and I couldn’t wait for it to end! They had us up at 4am every day running. Before that time the only running I ever did was running around the playground in grammar school. At the end of summer we’d have a big 5 mile run on family day so this was in preparation. Not being a runner and not in great athletic shape in general I remember having the most painful shin splints ever. It literally felt like the front of my shins were being cut into layers! They say whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right… Well, although the me and my super sonic strength NEVER had any interest in running after that I still do remember how GOOD IT FELT to finish the 5 mile run on family day! And I wasn’t even close to finishing dead last! Ha!
A few days in Raleigh to visit family, a few days for Inkcarceration both in July. But we’re taking a week next month to go to Warped tour and Universal in Orlando.
WorldCon

What is this vacation of which you speak?
Vay Kay Shun?
@yakkoTDI it’s a thing you do, and you take pictures… I don’t know myself
Kaua’i and it was amazeballs. Thankful that we were able to stay with friends that have property there.
@sillyheathen Kaua’i is beautiful. I haven’t been in many years. We went to Maui this year
@cbatte Maui was kind of tainted for me. My sister had her wedding there and was a bridezilla. The Englishman used to say he’s the only human that’s been to Hawaii and hated it. He did not feel that way after our vacation last month.
Yeh, went outside to the sauna almost every day…
You mean those five days I took at the end of August. Nope I slept and did spring cleaning to catch up from not taking any days up to that point all year (also I was exhausted)
Had a July 4th party with family and friends. Does that count?
My time off from work was spent moving a family member.
I spent a week in the hospital with sepsis and e-coli. Fun times. I especially liked the constant interuptions to take blood or put back fluid into my ravaged body via a constant IV drip.
@therealjrn Last time I took a week off it was due to installing a titanium rod in my leg.
@yakkoTDI Ouch! How’s your field goals now?
@therealjrn Just as bad but my arse kicking game is through the roof!
@therealjrn @yakkoTDI
Yikes, that’s a couple of nasty breaks.
@therealjrn @yakkoTDI
Guess that’s no comparison to being served a nice refreshing frozen cocktail while lounging on the beach front resort, huh…?

Ouch!
@Lynnerizer @yakkoTDI Hey! I got fresh ice chips in the hospi…uh…yeah, no comparison.
@therealjrn @yakkoTDI OMG how did you managed to have so much FUN?
@therealjrn hope you are feeling better!
Thank you @tinamarie1974! “They” sent me home a little early but I was SO ready to go home!

No vacation. I took a week off but we went up to the in-laws to take care of some stuff around the house.
@rabbitadopt fo you have enough in-law points to be on their good side yet?

Looks like a great time! Those pictures could be post cards! Love the rainbow it’s pretty impressive!

@Lynnerizer Well, I know fo sho I want to take it all with me when I get away from it all so… ¯\(ツ)/¯

I didn’t know what the “rock ‘n’ roll half marathon” was so of course I looked it up. My goodness that looks like a FUN TIME!
@Lynnerizer It’s a good race. I did the 5k the day before too.
But I don’t like running that far so that’s my first and likely last half marathon
@kittykat9180

@Lynnerizer damn. Ouch.
I got my knee replaced in June. My summer was spent in PT.
Worth it.
Three weeks in Portugal. The food and people were amazing. Cannot wait to go back (next year?)
@hugacrv
Was in Portugal (Lisbon & Algarve region) years ago. Absolutely wonderful experience. Would go back in a heartbeat
@hugacrv sounds awesome. And glad you avoided the Portuguese Man-of-War.
WORKER BEES! HERCULES! TURKEY GREASE! AWESOME!
@chienfou @hugacrv Lisbon gets more affordable every year.
A few days in Raleigh to visit family, a few days for Inkcarceration both in July. But we’re taking a week next month to go to Warped tour and Universal in Orlando.
Took a summer vacation in the early fall! Don’t know why other than renting the house is a lot cheaper and most of the area is still open.
@dontwantaname I much prefer to go places in the fall & spring if possible to avoid the crowds.
@dontwantaname @Kyeh
Off peak is the best time.
GREAT LAKES, GREAT TIMES!!!
I always use my vacation days to go work in another state. (Usually events similar to WorldCon or DragonCon; plenty of smiling faces to see!)
