First Sound Cylinder reviewer on Amazon returned it for a BOSE. Also liked Beats but did not like JBL. That sounds like a pretty good recommendation for the Sound Cylinder.
@RedOak Hah! Agreed. Definitive Tech leans toward rather clean, neutral sound. I've not heard these units, but their lineup of bookshelf speakers are not half bad.
Hey, let's ask the new guy we hired away from Monster Audio how much we should charge for this meh speaker. Or should we ask the guy who used to work for Bose to set the MSRP? Pick the middle? $200 it is! God, I love being in management.
This is surely worth $27. right? It's got to be. I have this untested belief that all 25mm "ipod"speakers sound the same, starting with the ubiquitous Altec Lansing inMotion Portable Audio System hatched back in 2004. As I own this highly collectible Portable Audio System, I have no use for this finely crafted updated, upgraded, enhanced, and modernized BLUETOOTH (!) enabled Pringles can. But it does look Fine, and the Storage Bag itself is no doubt worth the price of admission. Buy. Buy. Buy friends! Since I missed this month's cut-off time for the VMP club, I'll be hanging out another month, waiting for another chance to buy an IR Foscam security camera. I waited too long last time, they sold out, and my home continues to be burgled. I must have some kind of psychosis, as I continue to be robbed at home here, (not on Meh), while waiting on a deal to come up and take advantage of the VMP. I'd get therapy for this, but of course, I'm too cheap. But everyone, please buy this this wonderful looking soundbar. It really does look superb! And I'm sure it sounds Sweet!
i know its stuff that we've all seen before, but i just moved and could really use a speaker dock for cheap. bought one. also bought one of the krups coffeemakers from yesterday. Thanks... meh!
Mine took about five hours to charge, and I am awed. Great sound, better as BT than aux in, as others say. Very compact, sleek, feels like quality construction. Really happy with it, but now I wish I'd bought three.
The meh disposable Bluetooth speaker I bought last winter finally died yesterday, so this is actually good timing. While that one was a lot cheaper, this one looks like it's better built and will give more sound with greater fidelity. I'm in.
Received the speaker today excellent sound but ..Have it charging for more then 5 hours and not fully charged , still getting a steady red blink ,anyone have any insite on these ? ty in advance: )
@mellowirishgent just plugged it in, red blinky here (and it had to think about it, for almost a minute after plugging it in it was dark, about the time I had pulled the insert out to see what I was doing wrong it started blinking).
and mellowirishgent, it appears that if you are running them (powered on) and have the charger attached it will flash forever, even when it is charged.
sounds great for the size (as others have mentioned), bass is a bit lacking when standing open air (compared to the JBL Mini, the meh speaker standard) but up against a wall it's not half bad.
and a first for me... the bluetooth sounds better than the aux in... I have tried with multiple source devices and it seems that the aux in looses some signal... there is no noise (think toccs headphone) but it is definitely quieter than when bluetoothed. I am not a fan of the tooth of blue but to be honest on this device, it's pretty amazing (must be doing some bass enhancement/loss fudging).
Overall well worth the meh price... not sure it would be worth $50 that amazon is asking, I would say this devices sweet spot would be 39.99 for profiteering and 29.99 for value sales.
Update to my last post: Definitive support was excellent and sent a replacement free-of charge. So, don't hesitate to contact them if something goes wrong!
Update to reflect my complete satisfaction with this. Had it on the patio, streaming an AMZN station, and the neighbors all came over to see. They have very large speakers mounted in their garage, and routinely blast tooth-shaking sound. The idea that words could be heard, as well as serious volume, was a new concept to them. So I feel justified in playing 70s LOUD sounds all day long, because I have ten years of catchup to do. Right now it's Doors, Beatles, Starship, Jimi and Stones. They're just lucky I don't sing along. Maybe tomorrow.
Dang it, had to pull the trigger on this. kid took my other BT speaker, and now I just want something for the office, only question is..... is it possible to leave it plugged in (like leave it on the charger) and still use it so it never ever dies while I am in the middle of jamming to Flock of Seagulls?
Most negative reviewers at Amazon weren't miffed over price point but instead they complained mostly about short battery life, unable to pair Bluetooth with device, weak bass and, hardware breakage at the power connection.
Dang it! I waited too long talking myself into this as the perfect garage speaker...I often use my tablet in the garage to stream netflix or audio books while I tinker at my Mad Scientist workbench. Just as I decided to break down and change my Tightwad ways I get the "Sold out, there are no more" page! @hollboll@JonT if more speakers become available due to cancellations etc...is there a way to be notified???
@tightwad Seriously, for all Tinkering and Mad Scientist tasks, get this: yes, this . It can almost fill up the workshop with really great sound, and is dirt cheap. Consider a better power supply, though.
Get some 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm patch cables (headphone out of tablet to headphone into amp) over at monoprice, and you're golden.
Incredibly pleased. rare to get much midrange out of a speaker this size. No bellowing bass, but it does hit. Really good construction, a decent stand for $22 if nothing else.
Got mine yesterday. The stand isn't very sturdy and can roll over easily. It also could be at a better angle. The Bluetooth range seems a little weak. Other than that, it's pretty nice!
I bought it, I wanted a decent sounding blue tooth speaker. I like the price, and I like it too. It has very decent sound for music, it connects quickly to my phone but not my Chrome book (which has problems connecting to all my other blue tooth devices ). My only audio issue, it is somewhat lacking a deep base. The clarity and pleasantness of the high tones and midrange are excellent. The one weird thing is its weird stand that is supposed to hold a tablet or phone, or stack on top of a net book. The ID department seemed to forget about testing prototypes. The balance is off making it awkward figure out which is up since it rolls over. And, the holder is too thin to hold a tablets or phones bare naked and uncovered by protective cases. As a phone holder, Ithe speaker works better upside down using the flip out stabilizer ment on the bottom ment to be pointed down by pointing it up, and using the stabilizer as a cradle to hold my phone (when the speaker in upside down) (Since it is round, technically, there is not upside down or top so it doesn't matter how it is used. I am only saying since the design could use some tweeking. I know this description is a verbal mess, however, if you own one, you might understand. This is all secondary to the fact, it sounds great, and is definitely a recommended buy it if you get another good deal on it. I might buy a bunch to give as holiday gifts.
@raliegh Because it might be someone's wife, that's why! And why the hell wouldn't they let women work there? Nobody likes to go out to a group lunch with a bunch of cock blockers anyways.
@Stallion oh wait, I get it! Women who are married shouldn't be working at all. Pictures are ok, but otherwise they should be barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen.
@raliegh Who ever said all of that? I was simply curious if it was someone's wife at Meh, not trying to be sexist. I have no problem with women working, easier life and more money for the household. @editorkid, sounds like you may be guilty yourself, ha ha.
I like blue tooth headphones and speakers, rare earth minerals make good sound possible in small contraptions. $30 seems fair, if it is an above average sound machine, so I bought one, maybe I should have bought 10 to give everyone later this year for holiday gifts
@joejoebells go ahead and buy again, it will usually let you buy 3 total... in fact you should cancel your current order, then buy 3 with VMP and you will get 3 for $71... only $24 each... of course if they suck... you will then be stuck with 3 of em instead of one... but I digress. ;)
CORRECTION: "price has an enormous, almost decisive influence on a consumer's perception of a product. The twelve-dollar cheeseburger has a much higher bar to clear than the four-dollar one. A great TV for $300 can be a lousy one for $600...."
Instead of "perception", you should have said "expectation". The only perception you have of a cheeseburger is that it is edible (not always a good perception...) or of a TV is that it will work, You put a value judgement on an expectation that one TV or cheeseburger is better than another based solely on price.
you are both wrong. in the case of a burger, a $12 burger would have the advantage of placebo effect over a $4 burger. They could be exactly the same burger but if you tell the taster the prices he will think the $12 one tastes better and, some would argue, it really does taste better to that person. Somebody looking at a TV could likely have the same experience, but often its skewed by branding, or mitigated by actual specs.
@dtumd@comics360 You're both wrong. A $12 burger is just a $4 burger with eight one-dollar bills inside. Sometimes snuck in like a piece of lettuce, sometimes baked into the bun (look for places that offer whole-bill bread options), often ground up with the meat. The expectation is that it tastes slightly more like a bunch of sweaty butts and/or leathery wallets. Ultimately you perceive the feeling of a bunch of pieces of dollar bill stuck in your throat, as well as the aforementioned sweaty butt taste. The TV works the same way. They're the exact same TV, except 300 one-dollar bills have been stuffed inside the $600 unit. The expectation is that you can recover that money at some point. You either perceive a partially blocked image from all of those bills being crammed in such a slim, modern television; or you perceive a large hole in your set from where you extracted the $300 so you could buy a second TV.
@mellowirishgent what better place to ply one's bullshit than here? The place is littered with it, both in the forums and the product write-ups! ;-) (triple exclamation points)
Feeling like an idiot for getting Jawbone mini jam box. Was $199, price reduced to $179, on sale for $129, but the Microsoft store had them $50 off that at $79. Couldn't find them under $119 anywhere else, so thought it was a good deal. But can't imagine they sound 2x, let alone 3x better than the stuff Meh has been offering. Pretty damn quiet, actually. Great speaker phone, awesome for podcasts and spoken word, but very so-so for music.
Err... I did love it (the sound quality is great), but the charging port got pushed into the body of the unit and is now rattling around inside. From looking at the one-star Amazon reviews, it sounds like that's not an entirely uncommon issue. Dang! Now it's just a nice solid paperweight...
@tightwad Unfortunately it looks like some sort of rivet (or super-tiny hex screw?). If you have one of these and a tool to recommend that fits it... I'm all ears. I certainly tried.
@tightwadI'd try Definitive Technology's support before tearing into it. They're typically supporting more expensive speakers and might help you out - especially if you are professional and clear in describing the way it broke and point out others seem to be having the same issue.
@johnamo . . . failing the support channel, not much keeps me from tearing open a failed product. If those fasteners look like hex screws you might find a cell phone repair kit contains a driver that works. They're cheap and handy to have around anyway. A small allen/hex wrench might also work.
If those fasteners turn out to be pure evil to remove, drill them buggers out! (And fashion a suitable fastener later.)
(Of course, first be confident the tube can't be disassembled via other means, like removing the end caps.)
@RedOak Thanks for the information. I reached out to Meh support and will try Definitive if nothing comes of that. I certainly don't want to pry it apart if that voids my warranty!
@johnamo Keep us posted, please. I love mine, and if/when it does the same thing, I will not hesitate to open it up. I'll have to pick up a cell phone repair kit too, because I have a slight hardware addiction.
@johnamo@RedOak support first for sure. I haven't seen any riveted electronics but they do like to use funky tools...small torx is the most common for non-proprietary fasteners.
@OldCatLady I picked up the following phone repair kit from Newegg for closer to this $20 Home Depot price - rather than the currently crazy $55 price over there.
There are a lot bigger kits but this one is fairly solid and gets down to really small bits.
@OldCatLady Customer support was excellent at Definitive. They have now sent me a replacement at no charge after I supplied them with the serial number and a photo of the damaged USB port.
Another sound deal
@AttyVette Oh, you are soooo in treble with these daily puns.
@narfcake I thought people like the " pun" ishment..( that's my "cleft" notes version)
@AttyVette Bass-ically, yes we do!
@narfcake I know it hertz, but don't bass an opinion on a flat comment.
@JonT Sorry - I octave known not to jump to conclusions like this and speaker for everybody.
@brhfl that's weird. 'Got double email notices for your comment. Just checked and I'm not also subscribed to the thread.
Perhaps meh has applied a credibility multiplier to your posts? ;-)
Hey, let's ask the new guy we hired away from Monster Audio how much we should charge for this meh speaker. Or should we ask the guy who used to work for Bose to set the MSRP? Pick the middle? $200 it is! God, I love being in management.
@mike808 they got advice from Dr Dre as well
Is this just an upside version of a speaker dock?
@metageist wise man, you understand
@metageist it's a Speaker Dock without the docking, or the charging, so it must be worth more.
Minimal Sales Repel Profit.
This is surely worth $27.
right?
It's got to be.

I'm saving for the ir camera.
@wew I can't "picture" you waiting for the ir camera.. But before you know it they'll be back in a flash.....
So it's like a speaker dock, but instead of charging that IPad slowly, Bluetooths the battery out if it quickly?
Irk sighting reported. Over and out.
@gregormehndel Cool! you found it.
@Kylethephotoguy grin Nice Easter Egg! I'm so proud of meh self.
doot doot
i know its stuff that we've all seen before, but i just moved and could really use a speaker dock for cheap. bought one. also bought one of the krups coffeemakers from yesterday. Thanks... meh!
How dull and uncreative do you have to be to name your product "Sound Cylinder".......
@awk Like saying X-Box, right?
@awk simple, clean, elegant, and a bit alliterative. Much nicer than "Speaker Tube".
@Kylethephotoguy @RedOak what about Xbone?
Still rockin the X-mini Kais. Wonder how this compares?
Sound is remarkably good for the size and price. It's also very nicely built and feels like a quality product. Really happy with it!
Mine took about five hours to charge, and I am awed. Great sound, better as BT than aux in, as others say. Very compact, sleek, feels like quality construction. Really happy with it, but now I wish I'd bought three.
More Speakers. Really? Please...

@djdedd It's a conspiracy!
This little guy will make a fantastically obnoxious bicycle speaker! Perfect size for handlebars, top tube or down tube. Can't wait!
Received the speaker today excellent sound but ..Have it charging for more then 5 hours and not fully charged , still getting a steady red blink ,anyone have any insite on these ? ty in advance: )
@mellowirishgent Got mine today, also. Took almost six hours to fully charge.

Speaker Dock Thursday... oh wait.. no dock, but there is a shelf... hmmm....
Bluetooth Stand Thursday.
Sound Cylinder.
@rileyper you beat me to it....yep...echo does blue tooth, and pretty well, plus a whole bunch more. So...its mehtime.
@eeterrific Yep, I own one and love it.
Ok Meh. Technically not a speaker dock. But watch it.
Msrp = my stupid return purchases...

Early Meh.
Mehness indeed
Is that someone's wife over at the Meh stomping grounds? I see some bling on that finger.
@Stallion because no women work at Meh?
@raliegh I'm not sure what you are saying? They don't allow women who work at meh to be someones wife? That can't be right...
@raliegh You know, in fairness, maybe @Stallion was just hoping to find her on Ashley Madison...
@editorkid @Stallion try stockpotogal69
@raliegh Who ever said all of that? I was simply curious if it was someone's wife at Meh, not trying to be sexist. I have no problem with women working, easier life and more money for the household. @editorkid, sounds like you may be guilty yourself, ha ha.
@Stallion you can be sexist without trying
"Sound cylinder" is code for "hot blonde", right?
Gah I need one with a remote.
no thanks. I like the pebbles you sold me just fine .
Wait, it's Friday?
@jqubed no it's Bluetooth Stand Thursday!!!! LONG LIVE BST!!!
I like blue tooth headphones and speakers, rare earth minerals make good sound possible in small contraptions. $30 seems fair, if it is an above average sound machine, so I bought one, maybe I should have bought 10 to give everyone later this year for holiday gifts
@joejoebells go ahead and buy again, it will usually let you buy 3 total... in fact you should cancel your current order, then buy 3 with VMP and you will get 3 for $71... only $24 each... of course if they suck... you will then be stuck with 3 of em instead of one... but I digress. ;)
Can you get two of these and pair them for stereo sound? If so it might be worth a gamble
@tenaletilt Specs say it's already "2.1 channel bi‑amplified audio system." That is stereo with a bass channel.

I keep giving BT speakers away, so had to get one just for me. The momentary-ripe-sorcerer looked like this:
Re: hardware breakage at power connection has historically been a real issue with these otherwise awesome devices.
Ok this will be my 10th bluetooth speaker have no clue why i have to buy so many ..sucker for a good buy i guess.
