December 2018 book talk and book deals
9Let’s get started.
Three James Herriot Classics: All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, and All Things Wise and Wonderful
by James Herriot (Author)
$1.99 today on Kindle.
I mostly find out about Kindle and Audible book deals, but I hope some deals from other e-book retailers also make it into this topic. (I also hope I am the source for a few of these.)

I just started reading Murder for Christmas- an anthology we were discussing some other month. Anyone else? @therealjrn, you bought a copy, didn’t you?
https://www.amazon.com/Murder-Christmas-Packages/dp/0785823077/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1543783020&sr=8-4&keywords=murder+for+christmas
@sammydog01 I did! And I need to start reading it! Are you liking it?
@therealjrn I just read the first story. It was good even though I had read it before.
For the Christopher Moore fans out there- The Stupidest Angel is $1.99 on Kindle. I love this book- one of my favorite Christmas stories.
https://www.amazon.com/Stupidest-Angel-Heartwarming-Christmas-Terror/dp/0060842350/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1543853398&sr=8-1&keywords=stupidest+angel
@sammydog01 I went and bought this Kindle book on your “advice” (?).
If I don’t like it, do I blame you or the goat?
@phendrick Go ahead and blame the goat, but you only get two bucks worth of blame for this one. Let me know if you like it or just think it’s weird.
@phendrick @sammydog01 I like weird. In for one hundred and ninety-nine pennies.
@phendrick @therealjrn Did you read it?
@phendrick @sammydog01 I loaded it up from Amazon on my Kindle…the wrong Kindle. I’m so weird. I have three different Kindles so I have to keep my books all segregated and shit. You know, this Kindle is for business, real estate and investing, this other Kindle is for spiritual and personal growth, this other Kindle is for fun and bedtime stories…Have I moved it to the “right” Kindle? Hell no, I also can’t remember shit some days so I haven’t done that yet.
@therealjrn
Want spiritual growth?
Move South of the Red River.
Not exactly book specific but for a bookstore. If you are in range of a Half Price Books https://www.hpb.com/home they’re doing a "Buy a $25 gift certificate and they’ll give you a $5 gift certificate for yourself. Or, that’s $30 just for you to spend. Additionally, they’re doing a $100 gift card giveaway on the site as well.
‘Life of Pi’ is free to stream this month if you use an Echo along with Audible. Just ask Alexa “Whats free from Audible?”
@fool
Saw your post only now. Today that book is $15.39 for the Kindle version. OUCH.
I guess that was quite a bargain.
@phendrick The Herriott books for on sale fairly frequently so watch for it. I read the first one- it was really good.
@phendrick
Amazon deals often come and go quickly.
: (
Many Tolkien books
(the 3 LOTR books, The Hobbit, and many lesser known works, either original tales, letters, works set in Middle-Earth, and some [often definitive] translations of ancient classics) …
are on sale in e-book form today at Amazon, B&N, and possibly elsewhere.
(have not checked the Apple or the Kobo-Walmart stores yet.)
At $2.99 each, these are pretty attractive purchases if someone likes JRRT and does not already own them.

Thru midnight tonight (time zone varies by retailer) at various-book sellers.
All-new Kindle Paperwhite – Now Waterproof with 2x the Storage – Includes Special Offers
These are waterproof. I believe they also do BT and audio files including audible books.
Looks like $30 off at the moment.
Usually $129 currently $99
Memory can be added and/or ads (lockscreen only) removed for additional $.
These will likely sell out.
I would get one except that I already have a waterproof Oasis.

@f00l
Unfortunately, the 3g versions are either OOS or otherwise not included in this sale.
@f00l I don’t think they have actually come out with the 3G ones yet- they didn’t have them at launch anyway. Good deal!
@sammydog01
I lucked into finding a 3g waterproof Oasis in the Amazon warehouse a few weeks back. I think it was somewhat more than $100 off retail. I shouldn’t have, but I has been coveting one … I was weak .
I do love the damned thing.
@f00l
/giphy I’m jealous
@sammydog01
The cellular-enabled Paperwhite is a separate listing. As far as I can tell, it was introduced on Dec 7th at $249, but that might not be the “real price”.
Right now it is at $187. But us that an unusually low price (aka a real sale) or just a standard Amaxon discount? With no price history, I don’t know.
And it’s 4g LTE now, not 3g.
Here is the Amazon link:
https://www.amazon.com/All-new-Kindle-Paperwhite-Waterproof-Storage/dp/B075RNKT6G/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1544354877&sr=8-4&keywords=Paperwhite+3g
And here is what there is of the camelx3 price history for the waterproof 4g LTE version:
https://camelcamelcamel.com/All-new-Kindle-Paperwhite-Waterproof-Storage/product/B075RNKT6G
I think this current price is a sale price, not the regular price for this; and if I’m right, that is a substantial discount.
But I might be wrong. Perhaps that’s just the normal pricing.
@sammydog01
Confirmed: if someone wants the WiFi and cellular version of the waterproof kindle paperwhite, this is a sale price, and this is pretty big discount for a brand new device from Amazon.
As this cell version of this waterproof paperwhite will not show up for a while discounted either on EBay or in the Warehouse, this is prob the best price available for some time in the near future.
25% discount at the moment.
This sale is for “members” only. Which means accounts with current subscriptions.
Since any book can be purchased (by members) for the price of a credit, this sale is only a good deal for audiobooks less expensive than whatever the member pays for a single credit.
Members can purchase more credits whenever they want (in most circumstances).
If you are interested in becoming a subscribing member, some really nice starting up offers are out there.
To see these, go to slickdeals.net and search for “audible”.
@f00l Everything on my wish list is more expensive on sale than the price of an additional credit. In browsing genres I’ve seen a several which are a couple dollars less than buying a credit, but coincidentally many of those I recognize as previous Daily Deals sold for much less than the sale price.
I usually look forward to Audible sales. This one though is a bit of a marketing gimmick.
@ruouttaurmind
Agreed.
I’ve been trying really hard to not buy more books but this one is supposed to be good- “This Book is Full of Spiders” by David Wong. And it’s 3 bucks.
https://www.amazon.com/This-Book-Full-Spiders-Seriously-ebook/dp/B007KJHGNI/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1544718643&sr=1-1&keywords=this+book+is+full+of+spiders
@sammydog01
The title makes it irresistible.
For anyone with an audible credit subscription:.

@f00l You do know Big Data knows everything you’re reading don’t don’t you?
@therealjrn
Since so much of my reading (and my “reading”) is in e-book (often Kindle) or audible format;
And since my mobile and other OSs and my ISPs collect what they can (which is a lot);
Yes, I presume, Big Data knows just about all.
Sigh. I’m weak. I took a bite of the digital temptation, and now I’m addicted.

@therealjrn I gave one to my husband so I need another spare. Fingers crossed for 3G.
@therealjrn First Wooter, me. Total sold, 2. I guess Woot has hit Kindle saturation.
@sammydog01 Wow, and the other has just one sold…
Does the backlight work to read in a darkened room, like at bedtime?
@therealjrn Absolutely. It actually helps in most any light but you can also read in the complete dark. The light is adjustable. I have one of these first gen ones- the light is uneven, you can see where the leds are, but I still like it.
@sammydog01 @therealjrn
The brand new waterproof gen Paperwhites that have cell service also have 4g, not 3g.

@f00l @sammydog01 Ha ha, I clicked that link SO FAST. I thought it was just $62.
/giphy premature exclamation
@sammydog01 @therealjrn That would be a very nice Christmas present from Santa @f00l, wouldn’t it?
@Barney @sammydog01 @therealjrn
Santa-@f00l’s elves are all tuckered out.
And Santa-@f00l has already spent all the money in the known universe this week.
So sorry, lumps of coal for YOU.
@f00l @sammydog01 @therealjrn Not very nice of you Santa-@f00l. Not nice at all.
@Barney @f00l @therealjrn Nope, I spent at least half the money in the known universe. Stopping now. Trying to stop now.
@Barney @sammydog01 @therealjrn
But Why Stop?
/giphy don’t stop
Hey, @ruouttaurmind (And I think you might be), do you remember that really nice Paperwhite 3G Kindle you sold me for that amazingly low price? Well, I finally charged it up and guess what? You forgot to wipe your account. Looks like Barney is going to have a lot of free reading.
But don’t worry, Barney will wipe your account. Someday. Bwahahahaha!
Anyone have any suggestions on what books I should buy?
@Barney What are the most expensive ones? Those are probably the best.
@Barney The Stupidest Angel is still two bucks. It’s kind of raunchy though.
https://www.amazon.com/Stupidest-Angel-v2-0-Heartwarming-Christmas-ebook/dp/B006O0I3ZO/ref=sr_1_1_twi_kin_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1545493673&sr=8-1&keywords=stupidest+angel
Hey @Barney! Do you remember when you gave me your address to ship the Kindle to?
@sammydog01 Shouldn’t I be buying expensive raunchy books?
@ruouttaurmind Hi!
@Barney Most of the raunchy books I found were pretty darned cheap but this one is seasonal.
https://www.amazon.com/Santas-Naughty-Coming-Short-Story-ebook/dp/B07LH53G84/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1545495345&sr=8-2&keywords=santas+naughty+elf
I wish I had remembered to search in the incognito window. My list of recommended books will be interesting for a while.
@Barney @ruouttaurmind
Hey Barney! @ruouttaurmind wants you to use his Kindle account to purchase this one!
Right now! Today!
It only makes sense to get it today. I’m sure you’ll want to look thru this book someday.
@narfcake @Thumperchick @Ignorant Can you erase the various places that the account holder’s name is listed in the above graphic? Don’t erase the book info. I may want to make a purchase.
@f00l @ruouttaurmind Thanks for the info. Are there any books more expensive than this? The moon’s the limit (and then some).
@sammydog01 Raunch has got to be more expensive than this. I’m so disappointed.
@f00l @ruouttaurmind Oh, hey! I can buy this book and give it as gifts. What fun!
@Barney @ruouttaurmind
I just googled for “expensive Kindle book” and came up with that one.
Surely there are more of these worthies out there.
@Barney @ruouttaurmind
Here is a link to the book on Kindle. I know you will want to keep this link handy for future gifting.
https://www.amazon.com/International-Encyclopedia-Social-Behavioral-Sciences-ebook/dp/B00D8GA5G2/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1434021621&sr=1-1&linkCode=sl1&tag=httpwwwjimmyh-20&linkId=D67UMT5KL2KO6SLZ
@f00l @ruouttaurmind Tis the season for gift giving. Fa la la la la, la la la la.
@Barney @f00l You each have drastically overestimated the credit limit on my credit card.
Ya, you’re gifting me a major case of agita.
@Barney @ruouttaurmind
Then please add additional, better-funded payment methods to your Amazon account.
@Barney is waiting!
@ruouttaurmind In the spirits of Christmas (Past, Present, and Yet to Come), I have decided to relinquish my claims to your Amazon account. It is all yours, completely wiped from my Kindle.
Anyway, your credit limits were not able to support me in the manner to which I am accustomed.
@Barney It’s a Christmas miracle!
@ruouttaurmind You made me giggle.

@f00l I just bought a Kindle Oasis, was that a dumb thing for me to do?
@Barney @f00l OMG I’M SO JEALOUS! Just don’t drop it in the water.
@sammydog01 I don’t read in the bathtub.
Edit: or anywhere else that has water.
@Barney
Which one?
The leather-charging-cover non-waterproof one, or the latest waterproof one?
They are both very very nice.
Congrats!
Did you grab the 3g one off Woot? Having cell as well as Wi-Fi is also quite nice. (Tho not necessary for most of us)
Happy Birthday!
@Barney @sammydog01
Get BB-8 to read to you.
@f00l I bought the 3g non-waterproof one from Woot. Yep, it was a birthday/Christmas present from a friend.
Yippee, glad you approve!
@Barney
They are quite sweet to hold in one’s hand.
And the screen/backlighting looks great.
@Barney And you helped a Woot staffer figure out how to use the audible feature.
@sammydog01 I did? Wow, I did! Look at me I’m a tech genius!
Hmm… I wonder if I will be able to do that update on my new Kindle. (insert shruggie)
