Need a simple, wee little computer table? At Staples, this one might fill the void. At only $16.50 it’s about 65% off. It’s also available in 3 other colors at the same price.
In honor of Friday night’s April Fools cluster-fuko, this one is a bit of a “DIY” deal (in more ways than one).
TL;DR? Oh well, you have more money than patience. This post is for folks without ill-patience and sense of entitlement.
First, it requires you to do some of your own research. Also, for maximum savings you’ll have to do a simple 30 minute DIY home improvement project. No worries, if you can turn a screwdriver and read an instruction manual, you’re golden!
A few months ago my local electricity supplier rolled out a “go green” initiative which includes consumer rebates for switching to efficient electrical appliances. As I was researching the scope of this programme I learned most major electricity suppliers around the country have similar programmes available to their customers.
You can get cash rebates from your power company for purchasing and installing efficient modcons; everything from LED lighting to Energystar refrigerators, boilers, air-con units and more.
Think about it: your electricity distribution company will pay you for getting new stuff, AND you’ll save a bit more each month in the form of lower power bills!
I’ve always been dubious of such offers, believing I would be spending thousands and getting back pennies. I was surprised how beneficial the offers available to me could be if I am able to DIY the installation (light bulbs, refrigerator, etc).
Here’s an example: there’s a $75 rebate available for installing an approved IOT capable smart thermostat. I can buy a Emerson Sensi at Lowes for $109 and install it myself in about 20 to 30 minutes with a single screwdriver. My net cost: $35 for a wifi smart programmable thermostat. (remember, this is an example; we’re not discussing Nest vs Sensi vs Lux vs Ecobee vs Honeywell).
A quick Google search is a great way to start. Check into rebates available to you and save two ways!
Even though you can buy stuff through the Play Store using PayPal or money earned though Google Opinion Rewards, gift cards may still be useful for some.
I literally just paid for drive and i let my trial sub for play music expire. rewards surveys don’t come quick enough. will probably buy at least one of these.
@sammydog01 Very few reviews on this one. One bad review because on the USB-C port it doesn’t charge as fast as the theoretical USB-C standard. Other reviews are good, but unvetted.
@Stumpy91 Coupon code seems to be expired. Too bad. I received my order this afternoon. Qty 2 of this charger. It seems of decent quality, and it’s charging my iDevices without any problems.
One question I had about them was regarding how long the AC power cable is that’s included. I was concerned it would be a useless little stub. I ordered on faith and I’m glad I did. Power cable is about 38" long. Just enough to be useful, without being excessive.
So far my experience is positive, and based on about 2 hours of fussing with it, I would order again if I ever needed more.
@moondrake even though I’m not getting the boxes, I want to say thanks cuz I’ll be going to my local target store later to smell the lemon sugar body wash from the natural box. I used to buy one from Avon that smelled divine, but it was around $10 for 8oz. This one is $7 for 25oz. I can only hope it smells as good.
@sammydog01 thanks. I’ve actually made a red grapefruit sugar scrub. Super nice. This one was body wash though, scented like sweet lemon. I can’t use a scrub every day, skin is too sensitive. I’ve tried to make lemon scented body wash from recipes on the web, but they never smelled quite right.
@moondrake
I just walked out of target with two bottles of the wash. It’s not quite the same as the Avon one, but it’s the closest I’ve smelled, and way cheaper than Avon. Yay!
It’s a beautiful spring day. Leaves are green, sky is blue, the pond has wrinkles all over, birds are singing. Perfect for some Lord Dunsany stories, free. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N2689AW
Decent reviews, auto-return (to charging dock) and a mopping feature as well.

@sammydog01 For real? My bad. I guess it was a deal of the day for April 10th and I screwed up the dates. That’s a shame. I was going to get one for my brother to fuse together parts he prints on the da Vinci printer I gave him for Christmas.
@ruouttaurmind The codes newegg gives appear to be specific to the email addresses they sent the codes to. And newegg apparently quit sending me emails in 2013 after I quit opening them.
Note that it’s no fault of Newegg that I quit opening their mail. I actually like them very much as a vendor. But sometime in about 2012 I set up a retail folder in my junk mail account and a rule to send those messages there, and never really checked in until today when I went hunting for a Newegg mail to get my own code.
Every list that sent to me there has now died, except for Fry’s, which apparently will not give up.
Check with your local power company for incentives or rebates. My local power supplier provides a $75 incentive for installing smart thermostats, and this one is on the “approved” list.
Control from anywhere Simple setup
Customizable color touchscreen
Smart response temperature timing Indoor humidity sensor
Advanced fan/control comfort
Auto alerts
Locking touchscreen
Works with the Total Comfort Control app
One-year warranty
I received my thermostat order yesterday, installed it this morning. Except for having to run a new wire to the heat pump on the roof, it was exceptionally easy to install. So far, it works a charm!
Last month @ruouttaurmind almost had me on the line for the Dell e525w printer from Staples at $139. This printer has affordable aftermarket toner around $50 a set. I slept on it, though, and the price went up to $179.
Further research reveals the E525w supports airprint and Google cloud print, while the C1760nw does not. For half the operating costs, I’m considering working my way around printing from phones, tablets, or Chromebook.
Also, Best Buy has the same price on the c1760nw as Staples.
Sling TV On Demand streaming service lets you buy packages of TV services, both some broadcast and some cable channels, similar to what you could get with a fiber, cable, or dish service. It works pretty well. Sling Offers NBC and Fox to subscribers of the Blue package.
Sling offers ABC as an add-on the the Orange package.
Sling does not seem to have any rights to CBS and PBS programming at present. Some shows are blacked out because the streaming rights are already contracted elsewhere.
(Sling Media is owned by Dish)
Sling has now introduced, for $5 extra a month, a cloud DVR service. It’s in just past initial beta now, and only available on a few devices, notably Amazon devices such as the Fire Stick and Fire Tablets. (I imagine Amazon cut a deal with Sling to support Amazon devices first.)
Eventually they plan to make the DVR service available on Rokus and the like, and mainstream tablets and computers as well.
The DVR services also work pretty well.
If you are a cable cutter and you want to try Sling’s service along with the DVR package, some Amazon Fire tablets are on sale right now, possibly thru the end of the month.
These are also quite decent tablets, if the Amazon-centric interface doesn’t bother you. They are very nice for watching media. Hulu, Netflix, Vudu, etc all work quite nicely on these tablets.
All these are new and with full warranty. Refurb and used ones are available even more cheaply on Amazon’s site.
Amazon may intend to release their new models in late spring, they have done this pattern before. Hence, possibly, last month’s Kindle sale and this month’s Fire tablet sale. Perhaps.
The newest versions of these tablets come with Alexa functionality installed. Alexa can be disabled.
After the free 6 months, the digital subscription is $3.99 a month. Which comes to about $48/year plus tax, so for those who have used up their free six months, your deal is an even better deal.
@sammydog01
I had the Amazon Prime sub for WaPo, but my 6 months had already run out.
I went thru your link, above, and subscribed using Amazon payments and my Amazon email address to activate the new subscription. I think this canceled out my $3.99/month subscription in favor of the cheaper offer in your link, so I just saved myself perhaps $10 a year or so, figuring in tax.
@ACraigL Fortunately I missed out last time it was DotD. Although Elements lets you open an image with CMYK color space, it will not save in CMYK. Wassup with that?
So I continue to search for an option other than Photoshop CC. I need about 8 copies and I’m not tryin’ to spend $100/mo to resize images and convert to CMYK.
Anyone got a hot tip for me? I need decent color handling, modest image adjustment and CMYK in a non-subscription product.
I blame @ruouttaurmind for the proliferation of subscription based software.
@ruouttaurmindAffinity Photo boasts end to end cmyk 16 bit per channel capabilities. It was originally Mac only but is now available for Mac and Windows.
@ruouttaurmind Yeah, they assume if you’re doing print, you need high-end separation and CMYK output capability. I rarely have that need, so this is a great savings for me, but understand how it wouldn’t work for all.
For those of you that are feeling adventurous in your hair color, (ahem, @Barney), Arctic Fox is having an Easter sale, 15% off with the code bunbun. https://arcticfoxhaircolor.com
@f00l if you want a more subtle look you have to dilute it. Did the photo work for you yet? When I’m old, and my hair turns white/grey… Then I’ll probably finally have the neon colors, lol
I’ve never used this particular brand. I always used Manic Panic which is similar. Vegan, temporary… The dye is conditioner based so it’s really gentle on the hair.
I ordered a couple of colors. My hair is hit or miss because it’s become such a dark blonde that I’m pretty much a brunette now unless I’m standing in the sun… Then it looks golden. I don’t want to bleach my hair, but I’ve usually had good luck with pinkish/fuchsia colors. The manic panic doesn’t stay vibrant after the second wash for me. I’ve heard tons of good things about this hair dye, that’s why I’m trying it. I just refuse to bleach my hair since its so long. I don’t want to cause more damage to it.
@sammydog01 those lashes are something, aren’t they. The piercings don’t bother me. I don’t really understand the stretched ears, but, eh, whatever. It’s not my body.
@RiotDemon
Yeah I can see the photo now. Really nice hair she’s got. Don’t love the piercings and the earlobes, but whatever.
WIth me the thing is being so lazy about maintenance. I don’t mind doing interesting things, but then I never want to maintain anything. I mostly just wash my jair and ignore it. Or I don’t wash it, and then ignore it.
It’s longish not only because ponytails are easy, but alway because I can’t be bothered with getting it trimmed. The idea of regular appointments somewhere makes me want to scream.
My hair was kind of a mahogany brown once, with lots of red and gold in it, if I remember. Never that thick, and the texture was and is superfine, which is annoying. Yet another reason not to cut it, so that I can ponytail it.
It’s gone white or grey a bit around my face, and streaked thru. For a while this bothered me a bit - I would put a light blonde rinse just to soften the white look a little. But even that was a PITA for me - I always got around to doing it about 4 months after I needed to. ANd I was careless with what I used to buy when I bought that stuff, so sometimes I got the heavy duty stuff, and it didn’t help the texture any. Did some damage, when I bought something and didn’t read the label because I didn’t feel like taking the time.
And, due to aging, my hair is getting thinner. I have plenty of brown hair left. And plenty of white hair coming in. The white hair doesn’t bother me so much anymore. My skin is ok for someone my age, I was never tan crazy and never smoked, but no one is going to card me at a liquor store based on my youthful skin. So the hair color thing, the skin thing - whatever. Old fart here. Kinda got used to me as is.
Sometimes I think I should do something tho. Like, make a visible effort? Might make me seem a bit more civilized? Hmmm.
I don’t want vibrantly colored hair, like you see in google images. If I wanted anything, it would be the barest hint of a tint, something you’d have to look twice to see.
But they say leave it on 30 min. Ugh. And wash your hair in cold water. Not for me. That starts to sound like maintenance. But still, I’m a little intruiged.
What are these non-deep cleaning, low something-or-other shampoos they are talking about? examples of color-preserving shampoos? Would this tint stuff, if used properly, help the texture any?
How messy are they to work with? How much do you have to protect the bathroom or wherever you do it? How many maintenance.
What happens if you use that Mist dilution thing alone, without a tint color?
My fear about my own character, is that I’d do this once, perhaps like the effect, and then never bother to do it again.
@f00l ok… shampoos. Low sulfates are the ones that aren’t as harsh on your hair. Sodium laurel sulfate is the most common thing in your shampoo that makes shampoo lather a lot and make your eyes burn. It can also make your hair super dry. They’re fine occasionally if you use a lot of hair spray or whatever so it deep cleans the hair. They are also good to use before dying because it opens up the hair cuticle and that helps the dye stick to the hair.
Examples. Pretty much anything made by Shea Moisture is sulfate free, but they stopped carrying it at the store so I switched. I currently use:
There are two that look almost identical. I’m not at home so I’m not sure the exact one, but it looks like that. It still lathers. The Shea Moisture one didn’t lather much.
The mess… It’s like putting conditioner in your hair. As long as you’re careful, you don’t slop it around everywhere. I just wear a dark shirt that I don’t care about. I usually put down a plastic grocery bag where I put my dye. I wear gloves. I put the hair I’m not dying in a bun. I’ve dropped dye on my counter, and as long as I wipe it up quickly, it’s been fine. Whatever hair I’m dying, I roll it into a little bun and clip it up. If I want to sit somewhere, I’ll put a shower cap or plastic bag on my head.
The dilution probably does absolutely nothing on its own. It’s honestly probably just conditioner. People have been mixing temporary hair dyes with just conditioner for a while for pastel looks.
(Whatever I forgot to respond to, I’ll add in the next message.)
Newegg Shell Shocker deal (DotD) for April 17th: Tenda FH1206 High Power Wireless AC1200 Dual-band Router 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz for $7 with free shipping using promo code EMCSREBG6
I don’t know anything about this brand, but for seven bucks, it might be worth a shot if you are looking for a router to tinker with, or perhaps need to set up an isolated wifi network for media server, gaming or security cameras or whatever.
I noted the 10/100 ports, but for a local wifi network, or a tinkering toy, that’s not a big deal. Or even to keep on the shelf as a temporary spare in case one of my primaries fail? I’d rather have a $7 router collecting dust than a $150 router. Not to mention technology changes so fast in networking the $150 spare could be worthless before it’s ever needed for service.
If memory serves, this is the lowest price I’ve seen on the DJI Phantom 4: DJI’s official store on eBay is offering the Phantom 4 (factory refurb) for $799 and free shipping. Use offer code PSHOPTECH417 to save 20%, lowering the price to $640 with full DJI warranty. Offer code expires on 4/19.
Amazon has the Logitech Smart Control and Hub on sale for $70 (new, shipped) right now. I have 2 of these and they’re awesome. Mostly because you can just launch the app and control everything right from your phone.
Thanks for starting this.

Maybe you have a champagne palate but a craft beer budget. Here’s the super-luxo model for $35.

@f00l Right now? Probably piled in my garage!
In honor of Friday night’s April Fools cluster-fuko, this one is a bit of a “DIY” deal (in more ways than one).
TL;DR? Oh well, you have more money than patience. This post is for folks without ill-patience and sense of entitlement.

@ruouttaurmind Great reminder!
(I’ve already taken my Energy Star and conservation credits years ago. New toilets for $0 FTW!)

(And no. You can’t use these to buy hardware.)

Even though you can buy stuff through the Play Store using PayPal or money earned though Google Opinion Rewards, gift cards may still be useful for some.
@someRiverNoise It would take me 100 years to burn though $100 in play money.
@ACraigL
I have numerous apps on a list in an app which tracks sales/free things, and when they drop in price I’ll get notified.
Since I don’t really root anymore though, numerous apps which several years ago I’d have quickly bought aren’t needed anymore.
And I’m assuming you know that this credit could go towards movies and TV shows also, though it’s probably easier just to use Netflix or something.
@someRiverNoise You could also use this to PAY for Netflix/HBO Now, etc, right?
@smigit2002
Can you? How?
@f00l @smigit2002
Netflix supports Google Play billing (from what I just saw), so if one has that set up in conjunction with Netflix, then yes, it should work.
@PlacidPenguin
How to do Showtime or HBO Now or Sling?
@f00l
In HBO Now on the mobile app you can select Play Credit as a payment option.
Of course though, for this as well as Netflix, my answers are based off of quick app installation and/or an internet search.
@PlacidPenguin
Yes, but it’s easier to ask. Perhaps someone already knows, and I can avoid a search, because I’m basically an uncivilized lout.
@PlacidPenguin @f00l Also, fun fact, looks like if you sign up for an HBO Now subscription before 4/6, they’ll give you a $15 Google Play credit after you pay for your second month.
http://help.hbonow.com/app/answers/detailHBO/a_id/244/~/march-2017-hbo-now-%26-google-play-credit-promotion
@smigit2002 Interesting. Time to look at the GoT schedule.
@PlacidPenguin
Re play credit
If you don’t have enough play credit to purchase something, will it charge the card on file for the extra?
@f00l
If you’re buying directly though the Play Store, you can combine credit with a different payment method (I.e PayPal, credit card, carrier billing).
IAPs don’t support that.
I literally just paid for drive and i let my trial sub for play music expire. rewards surveys don’t come quick enough. will probably buy at least one of these.

@djslack Point taken. Useless to post Newegg offer codes.
Is this any good? I don’t know. But it’s a three book series, each kindle book is $1.99 and each audible add-on is $1.99.

@ruouttaurmind
Ty!
@f00l I ordered one for home. Tried to get 2 more for the office, but limited to one per customer.
I just checked, and the Dell e525w is now lower at $129. http://staples.com/Dell-E525W-Color-Laser-All-in-One-Printer-New/product_1667711
An even more intriguing deal if you do not need to scan is the Dell c1760nw for $85. Toner cartridges with the same page yield as the ones for the e525w (2k black, 1.4k color) are only $25 for a whole set at Amazon. Link: http://staples.com/Dell-C1760nw-Color-Laser-Printer-STP-CGFYN-V2-New/product_122141

@f00l Ypu can use that Alexa capability to order a $25 Amazon gift card and get a $5 credit. Alexa only.

@sammydog01
That’s a great price for a great paper.
Amazon Prime members can get 6 months digital subscription of The Washington Post for free by activating the offer here:
https://subscribe.washingtonpost.com/prime/#/
After the free 6 months, the digital subscription is $3.99 a month. Which comes to about $48/year plus tax, so for those who have used up their free six months, your deal is an even better deal.
@sammydog01
Thanks.

Photoshop and Premiere Elements are back on sale as another Amazon DothD. It’s $5 more than last time, but still is $50 off normal price.
https://smile.amazon.com/Adobe-Photoshop-Elements-15-Premiere/dp/B01KICI37Q/
@ACraigL Fortunately I missed out last time it was DotD. Although Elements lets you open an image with CMYK color space, it will not save in CMYK. Wassup with that?
So I continue to search for an option other than Photoshop CC. I need about 8 copies and I’m not tryin’ to spend $100/mo to resize images and convert to CMYK.
Anyone got a hot tip for me? I need decent color handling, modest image adjustment and CMYK in a non-subscription product.
I blame @ruouttaurmind for the proliferation of subscription based software.
@ruouttaurmind Affinity Photo boasts end to end cmyk 16 bit per channel capabilities. It was originally Mac only but is now available for Mac and Windows.
@djslack Thank you, Sir. I’ll look more closely. The first thing that appeals is the $50 one time entry fee. No subscription. Sweet.
@ruouttaurmind Yeah, they assume if you’re doing print, you need high-end separation and CMYK output capability. I rarely have that need, so this is a great savings for me, but understand how it wouldn’t work for all.

If I didn’t care about keeping my natural hair color, I’d totally do this:
@RiotDemon
This isn’t showing up for me, either on the chromebook or on IOS. What is it?
@RiotDemon That would be pretty except the eye makeup and piercings are distracting me. And that ear.
@RiotDemon
How hard is this stuff to use?
Can you leave it on for less time and get a more subtle look?
@RiotDemon
I currently use:
https://www.walgreens.com/store/c/ogx-renewing-argan-oil-of-morocco-shampoo/ID=prod6055562-product
@f00l it won’t change the texture of your hair.

I don’t know anything about this brand, but for seven bucks, it might be worth a shot if you are looking for a router to tinker with, or perhaps need to set up an isolated wifi network for media server, gaming or security cameras or whatever.
@ruouttaurmind Crazy that something like this, can be this cheap. Two things to keep in mind:
@ACraigL Right? Seven bucks including shipping?
I noted the 10/100 ports, but for a local wifi network, or a tinkering toy, that’s not a big deal. Or even to keep on the shelf as a temporary spare in case one of my primaries fail? I’d rather have a $7 router collecting dust than a $150 router. Not to mention technology changes so fast in networking the $150 spare could be worthless before it’s ever needed for service.
