This qualifies that the Amazon price comparison is “new”, which implies that the product is refurbished. But it doesn’t actually say that it is. Is the item new or what?
@joelmw This item is new. It’s written that way so you don’t go comparing it to the price you find on Amazon for a refurb listing. Compare with “new” and you see it’s a steal.
I’m contemplating getting this so we have a backup and won’t be without when the old one finally gives up. This one is a bit fancier. Both may indeed be entry level, but probably good enough for a yokel like me.
The cheaper model has impressive ratings (21372 reviewers averaging 4.4 out of 5 stars). The fancy model only has 15 reviews at 4.1 and the digital fanciness may make it more susceptible to failure. But it does have that three-year, so . . .
@joelmw@rtjhnstn The one you have is a DBM-12 and the current one on Meh I believe is a CBM-18 or something very similar to it. The CBM-18 is much better and if you get it, you should probably relegate your old one to being a backup rather than the other way around.
Yes this is a very good deal and it’s quite a decent cheap grinder even at $100.
@boygenius1991@rtjhnstn I’m not sure if I’m missing something, but I don’t see that any of the negative reviews address grind quality and a couple (there aren’t many) seem to be items that would be covered by warranty and might even have been user error.
@boygenius1991 Cheap grinders in general won’t be that good at french press or espresso. This is a good value for a basic brew grinder. For french press you need a big precise grinder that makes very few fines.
This is a terrible coffee grinder. I had one, it was incredibly noisy in use, and when it crapped out within a year, the motor gave off an acrid burning smell!

@joelmw I believe I purchased from Amazon for $59. It is truly an entry level conical burr grinder.
@joelmw It comes with 3 year warranty, soo I assume new. The open box knife was only 90 days.

@ExtraMedium You have my super-sized medium appreciation.

@rtjhnstn We actually own the $60 model which has served us well for several years.

I’d thought about getting one of these for french press. is it good?
@boygenius1991 See my comment above. This does not create a very consistent grind.
@rtjhnstn wow those are some shitty amazon reviews. thanks for the heads up.
@boygenius1991 @rtjhnstn
This is certainly a bad review, but not particularly helpful:

@boygenius1991 @phr Thank You! I had to filter my coffee a second time to remove excess grounds using a Victor & Victoria coffee maker
@boygenius1991 @rtjhnstn try watching. James Hoffmann’s French press video on Youtube. Basically, steep a long time and pour carefully.
I new a new coffee grinder but i think the really cheap models would be sufficient for me
Can it be used for spices?
@dagirlgenius I’d advise against it.

Don’t buy, get an Oxo or Baratza instead.
