My every day carry is a Ken Onion CRKT and I love it. I'm strongly considering this as a backup.. I like mine without the serration, but for that price I will think about it!
@christinerenee there's this shelf on the landing between my second third floors that hold my collection of unopened knives which weigh down my collection of foot race and ocr bibs. Every once in a while I have occasion to gift a knife. Even rarer, I lose a knife and grab another. Maybe I need to reevaluate my life. Maybe I have too much disposable income. Maybe its a male thing in my genetics.
@mehgrl I'd buy this knife too if it wasn't so expensive. I hardly ever use them but it's nice to have them. Just a little bit too steep a price. And I love the twofers, as i can give the second to the guy who helps me at work.
@christinerenee I like to carry one on me (two or three of I'm hunting) almost all the time.. Sometimes one gets lost or broken.. Plus I like to keep a spare in my truck. There are tons of times where a knife comes in handy, but I mostly use them for opening boxes.
Last time I was flying home from LA I forgot to put my favorite knife into my checked bag, and realized as I was in the TSA line that it was in my pocket.. So I went back to the baggage check area to see if there was any way to get it back into my bag.. There was not.. Instead of throwing it away, I gave it to the nice lady working the baggage check counter. At least someone got to keep my favorite knife!
@christinerenee Well other than liking to own different knives, theres also different situations for different knives. It depends on what you're wearing, where you're going, what you're doing. In jeans, i can carry almost anything. Jeans can withstand any weight and size. But slacks or shorts, a big heavy knife is gonna weigh it down. Not to mention if you're in slacks or a suit, a big tactical knife isn't the most socially acceptable. In that case, you might want to choose something lighter and more gentlemanly. You dont wannt pull out your 7 ounce 4 inch beast at a dinner party to say cut a stray thread on you wife's dress.. considerations like that is something a knife enthusiast pays attention to. And that is just considering your attire. There's where you're going. Like what are the knife restrictions there? Laws? Then theres the obvious question of what you are doing. And that question is self explanatory. You pick the right knife for the job. Those are just some considerations people might make when choosing what they buy and what they carry that day. That would be part of the reason why a knife entusiast would own many knives. Other than being an enthusiast. Like is there a reason to own that many shoes or purses. People would say of course there is. It has to match what im wearing and where im going and i just gotta have the newest thing.
Wait ... so maybe I should call the Fashion Police if somebody has more pairs of shoes than me? you can only wear one pair at a time, so why do some people own so many shoes? Seriously, I like to use the right tool for the right job. I also appreciate the quality and itility of a well designed knife.
@mehgrl Meh TOO!! They are just really really useful, and each is best at one or another os several things, but there is no one knife for everything... Also ditto all the above!!
@mehgrl So you're at his house and he brings out some delicious New York strip steak and you notice that his steak knives are Chicago cutlery just like the ones Meh. sold, and he's got a CRKT Ken Onion as well as whatever other knives I've unfortunately missed, and you call over your friends on the force because that steak is so darn tasty.
@alacrity I can't field dress a deer worth a damn with a combo edge . . . Now, with my Cold Steel Voyager 4", I can do it in 3 minutes or less. There's a gal at Bass Pro when we stop in Springfield on our way to hunt that can put an edge on that blade like no other - I could do surgery with that knife.
This seems real similar to the Schrade tanto a while back. While this one seems nicer, it is too similar and too expensive for my tastes. Makes me want to go: Meh.
What I really, truly, honestly need is not a knife that's good at piercing, but a knife that's good at opening cardboard boxes, as that's literally all I really do with my knife. And truthfully, I have very little inconvenience in going over to the knife block and grabbing a steak knife to do that. Or in just ripping it apart with my bare hands. Somehow I always manage to open that package and find my way into that cardboard box.
I need to own up to reality. I'm never going to "pierce" anything :-/
@daveJay the one a few months back with the curved edge and short blade is excellent for cardboard box cutting, I use it for that purpose at work, and it's the legal length for carry in my city. https://meh.com/deals/kershaw-shuffle-snow-white-knife
@daveJay I buy a lot of the cheap scissors from Harbor Freight. (Often on sale for 99 cents, sometimes free with coupon.) Since I have a pair in most rooms, it is the tool of choice for opening boxes. More importantly, they can get through the plastic inner packaging from hell.
The great thing about the Harbor Freight scissors, is I don't feel bad about throwing them out when they get dull, bent, or coated with gunk (what is that stuff? Are my children using the scissors to cut peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?). Thus the scissors I use are always sharp and clean.
At $28, this knife costs as much as a three year supply of scissors.
@grazapin liner lock is pretty easily unlocked by the palm on accident. I've done it more than once. Best that I've used is the axis lock. My benchmade mini griptilian has it. Really solid and hard to accidentally disengage.
@grazapin I agree with @DigMe , Liner lock just isn't as secure as I'd like in a tool that could fold closed and harvest a finger or two in the commotion. I prefer a bolt lock like Benchmade's Axis system or Spyderco's Action Lock bolt system. Chances of an accidental fold-up are reduced to nearly nil.
@grazapin@DigMe Liner locks are great. I've EDC'd different liner lock knives from multiple brands for years and I've never had a lock fail on me. It's not only a safe locking mechanism, but also one of the simplest to use one handed. Just make sure to steer clear of low-quality knives, as their locks can get shoddy, no matter the mechanism.
@DigMe Perhaps you used an inferior liner lock and think that they're all that bad? I've never had a liner lock fail on me...and I've used some really cheap eBay shipped-direct-from-China liner locks.
@ChunkyBitz Ditto- Although my Mini-Bushman from Cold Steel [hardly a mini though] has some kind of sliding bar lock that pretty much makes it the closest possible equivalent to a fixed blade knife, most of my EDC knives are liner-locks and I have never had a failure- even with the cheaper ones I have gotten from Tractor Supply or other stores. That being said, I have never bought any at bargain discount stores, flea markets, or other venues where the knives are the equivalent to "Saturday Night Special" handguns- i.e., so chaeply made that they are more likely to injure the owner than the object being cut...
@PhysAssist@Chunkybitz I'm glad that y'all have never had liner lock failures. I'm sure many others haven't as well. I have experienced it personally with CRKT knives.. BTW, if liner locks never fail then the LAWKS system wouldn't have been invented and implemented.
@DigMe Actually very few, if any at all, still use the LAWKS system. I think only one knife in the new 2015 lineup has a similar locking mechanism. Its true liner locks can be the weakest locking system. But many knives have trustworthy strong liner locks. Quite honestly i've only come across such a unyielding opinion of liner locks on forums like these. There was even one guy that said the only proper locking system was an Axis lock. I laughed at him.
@xEBRONx the combo edge makes a tremendous difference on rope, or anything sturdy enough to offer "resistance". If you've ever had to get thru something that kept slipping off the blade- the serrations keep that from happening.
@deemkooo this is an EDC knife- not a collector's piece- made for every day use and performance, the "flipper" is a tab on the back of the blade that assists in pushing the blade out of the folded position for one-handed opening. This is a great knife- and I can't buy it cuz I have 300-ish already...
@xEBRONx i Would have to disagree with that. CRKT has had some decent models in recent years. In fact out of the 2015 offerings, theres more crkt models I'm interested in than Kershaw
@deemkooo there are dozens of things we do every day that a pocket knife comes in handy for- from opening a box, to mail, shaving off a rough edge on something, prying off a label or even chopping off the 1/3 of asparagus you don't eat instead of paying $6 a lb for it at the store. That'n it's just cool to have a knife in yer pocket when ye need one.
@phatmass I use mine for everything... well by everything I mean opening packages since it works really well for that. The style I carry around now is just like this (tanto blade, partial serration) The serration is nice for cutting rope. Only down side is they're kinda annoying to sharpen. Although don't pay a lot of money for one. If you pay a lot then you're going to be all "I could open this box but then my $100 knife will get that sticky tape gunk on it!!! Oh Fiddlesticks!" Whereas with a cheapy you're using it to pry open bottle caps and other scary, dangerous things because if you break it oh well. (Never actually tried to open a bottle cap with a knife... yet)
@alacrity I think @phatmass meant this knife, not pocket knives in general. I never go anywhere without a pocket knife, but I don't see why I would want this one. I like my pocket knives to have a single blade. This one is 1/3 saw, 1/3 blade and 1/3 another blade leading to the point. I'm guessing that makes it a "survival" knife. My knife of choice for many years now is the Gerber Aspect, in the knife-only, not half saw blade, version: They don't make this model anymore, but you can still find new ones on eBay.
@ChunkyBitz I feel like I would definitely either cut my fingers or cut up other things in my pocket with that open portion of the knife.. I'm not a fan of it.. otherwise looks like a nice tool.
@kadagan Yeah, I wondered about the exposed blade when I ordered it. Turns out that it's a non-issue, though...the gap between the exposed blade and the opening in the handle is only 1/16" at the widest point. If I try, I can get a fingernail to touch the blade, but it's never happened accidentally. There's no way I could cut a finger with it, and I have tiny fingers (I wear men's size small gloves). Even keys are too big to fit in there. It's not a perfect design though; you know how blood makes a knife handle slippery when you're repeatedly stabbing someone? I think a small finger guard would have been a good addition for such a circumstance. Other than that, I love it.
Well, I'm the the time it took to read a couple reviews, it dropped to $48.08 on Amazon. Not that I didn't totally want it anyway. I just don't need another knife. Hopefully it'll be sold out in the morning.
Serrations are so task-specific that I can't justify wasting so much usable blade just to have that on hand. Unless you're cutting rope (and lots of it, as a decently sharp knife should have no trouble cutting through the odd rope), I don't see the need. Even then, I'd almost go for this blade [dad wants a combo] if it didn't have that stupid tanto blade. For every tacticool mall-ninja's wet dream in which his tanto tip saves the day, there are countless tasks in which a drop point blade excels. Serrations and tanto together? Talk about a bitch to sharpen...
@ChunkyBitz unless you live in a place like ill-annoy that says > 3" blade is evilbad and ca be used to send you to jail for longer than burglary or assault, whereas the blade thickness is not considered.
I've been waiting for a CRKT deal, even better it's a black Ken Onion knife, at a good price. What's not to love about this deal? Picked up three of these knives. I can't wait to see this knife and compare it to the Schrade serrated knife, I'm expecting this one will be of far higher quality. I might demote the Schrade to an all-purpose tool that stays in my car.
@donnameh Schrade still makes decent knife blades, but the handles tend to be cheap plastic. I still have a 45 year old bone handle 3 blade folder I was given as a kid- the thing is a work of art in simplicity and function.
This knife trend is making me think it's time to cut off my VMP membership. Meh...Sharpen up and take a stab at offering some cutting edge products that are not so dull.
Guess i'm the only one in the dark. Who in the heck is Ken Onion ? Will buy one in a minute though I don't like 'clips'. Can they be removed ? One last thing. I don' think I have an understanding of the word 'tactical'...... I pull out a knife and he pulls out a gun. Is that how it works ?
@1wally1 Ken Onion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Onion) is a renowned knife maker. I really like some of his designs. To be fair though, he's probably the only knife maker I know of by name, since he puts his name on all of his designs.. Maybe he's a little egotistical?
I searched far and wide, yet could not come up with a "serrated onion" font to share my opinonion of todays offering. So, with tears in my eyes (and poor puns intended) my cutting edge wit, will just have to suffice: "meh". This belongs on the crap site...oh wait, it has been many many many times.
Please don't stoop to running re-runs of the junk that amazon can't peddle off as a "deal" over on it's crap site. You're better than this meh!! Much better.
I have decided that I would like to purchase one of these. Someone kindly cancel your order so that one becomes available for me. Alternately you could hack the user database, get my address, and send yours to me as a baby gift. It gives me a warm a fuzzy feeling to be surrounded by such a Meh community.
DISCLAIMER: Check your state laws about knives, New York specifically is stringent on these laws. Carrying these can give you a misdemeanor. Even carrying while concealed or in a backpack can give you a misdemeanor.
I received my CRKT Ken Onion Shenanigan knife today in the mail... I love it. I'm extremely pleased with the quality and the design. The steel handle feels nice and firm in the hand, the blade is scary-sharp, I even like the appearance of the matte black finish on the blade. The quality of this knife puts the Schrade one to shame. One of my best Meh purchases to date.
@donnameh I definitely love this knife too! I've been using it as my every day carry for a few weeks now. Super sharp!! I couldn't find scissors when I needed to cut out images on paper, so I used this with no issues at all! It replaced my heavier ken onion CRKT knife (which I like more, but it weighed my pants down!!).. haha

Ugh, Saturday AM knife fight!
@Stallion concur
@Stallion Saturday o' clock already? Wow time flies
@Nexar Yup! Friday night on the east coast, gone just like that! Meh!
Ken it chop onions?
@revloki it'll cut thru a soda can, then watch how it slices this tomato! It just goes onion, and onion, and onion...
Cool. I need a razor for my coke.
@Headly can, of course. As mentioned above. Of course..? Well, it is Friday night, I suppose. Party on, Garth.
@Otis_T_Slim party on, Wayne.
@Headly I'm not worthy
This is what you get me for my birthday, meh?!
@ongware Happy Birthday!!
Meh has me trained well. I know when midnight is, no matter what!
@ongware Happy Meh Birthday!
My every day carry is a Ken Onion CRKT and I love it. I'm strongly considering this as a backup.. I like mine without the serration, but for that price I will think about it!
guttural-black-bead...
Hey Farva, what's the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy shit on the wall and the mozzarella sticks?
@zacatac oh, you mean Shenanigans?
Come on already Meh. Enough with the knives! If I met a guy who bought every knife you've posted, I'd call the cops.
@mehgrl that would be me... o.o
@ongware I've bought most of them as well...
@mehgrl I was thinking the same thing.
Actually, i can think of a shun set i passed, as well as strak knives off the bat, so maybe im safe.
@ongware @kadagan Why do you need so many? What do you do with them?
@christinerenee there's this shelf on the landing between my second third floors that hold my collection of unopened knives which weigh down my collection of foot race and ocr bibs. Every once in a while I have occasion to gift a knife. Even rarer, I lose a knife and grab another. Maybe I need to reevaluate my life. Maybe I have too much disposable income. Maybe its a male thing in my genetics.
@ongware At least your answer is a lot less creepy than I imagined.
@ongware And me.
Wait ... so maybe I should call the Fashion Police if somebody has more pairs of shoes than me? you can only wear one pair at a time, so why do some people own so many shoes? Seriously, I like to use the right tool for the right job. I also appreciate the quality and itility of a well designed knife.
@christinerenee thanks... i think? haha
@mehgrl Meh TOO!! They are just really really useful, and each is best at one or another os several things, but there is no one knife for everything... Also ditto all the above!!
@ongware They don't really count as they wouldn't [hopefully] be the kind of knife you would carry around [well at least not the kind I would...].
@mehgrl I have to have so many meh knives. I use the previous meh knife to open the plastic clam shell the new meh knife comes shipped in.
@mehgrl .. Some folks call it a sling blade, but I call it a Kaiser blade.... mmmmm hmmmm.....
@givemeyoursoul Sling blade huh?
@givemeyoursoul Yep that's pretty much what I'm picturing.
Hmmm, tantolizing.
Knife So Fancy
@TerriblyHuang thought it was gonna be
@TerriblyHuang she looks like she'd be chewy
sigh
Just can't spend this much $$ on a liner lock.
Not a fan of the combo edge - but might be worth a look at this price.
@Pavlov i wasn't a fan of a combo edge for years- then I got a CRKT Leek... dammit- this is really a decent knife.
@Pavlov Springfield Oregon?
@Saffer49 Missouri
@alacrity Seriously? This naming scheme makes no sense to me.
@andrewpatrick easy- it was a Ken Onion knife- Leek seems right for a small knife
I can't resist. I think I have a problem.
This seems real similar to the Schrade tanto a while back. While this one seems nicer, it is too similar and too expensive for my tastes. Makes me want to go: Meh.
@alose Other than the tip they have almost nothing in common. The Schrade is like holding a brick with a sharp end.
Welcome to cutlery.meh!

@daveJay Unfortunately, if you order this knife it will come inside a box which needs a knife to open.. Its a vicious cycle!
@daveJay my favorite knife is a Kershaw Chive. Small enough to fit in khakis, awesome for cutting boxes.
@daveJay the one a few months back with the curved edge and short blade is excellent for cardboard box cutting, I use it for that purpose at work, and it's the legal length for carry in my city. https://meh.com/deals/kershaw-shuffle-snow-white-knife

At $28, this knife costs as much as a three year supply of scissors.
@daveJay Despite popular opinion, this serrated tanto can cut cardboard (or in your case, tape on cardboard) as good as any knife.
@daveJay I may be weird but I use a locking utility knife for that. Or sometimes a box cutter that I don't know where I got.
It's a nice looking grip but tanto, combo edge and liner lock all combine for a no-buy.
@DigMe What's bad about liner lock, and what is your preferred locking mechanism?
@grazapin liner lock is pretty easily unlocked by the palm on accident. I've done it more than once. Best that I've used is the axis lock. My benchmade mini griptilian has it. Really solid and hard to accidentally disengage.
@grazapin I agree with @DigMe , Liner lock just isn't as secure as I'd like in a tool that could fold closed and harvest a finger or two in the commotion. @MehAmphetamine I agree, I almost always carry a liner lock.. Any other system is too hard to close one handed..
@DigMe Perhaps you used an inferior liner lock and think that they're all that bad? I've never had a liner lock fail on me...and I've used some really cheap eBay shipped-direct-from-China liner locks.

@Dfunk1210 my opinion is only from personal experience of failing liners. I'm sure there are plenty of great locking mechanisms. Peace.
tanto is good for self defense but im not digging serrations.
@xEBRONx my brother collects knives. would he like this? also, does "blade flipper" mean that's how you open it?
@xEBRONx the combo edge makes a tremendous difference on rope, or anything sturdy enough to offer "resistance". If you've ever had to get thru something that kept slipping off the blade- the serrations keep that from happening.

@alacrity thank you for all the information. My brother isn't a "collector" wanting to add pieces. he likes to collect knives.
@deemkooo CRKT isn't particularly known for having good knives. Could do better in the price range. Kershaw Skyline is a favorite for me.
@alacrity I agree with the serrations but not on a tanto knife. Tanto isn't an optimal every day cutting blade shape.
@xEBRONx My edc is a kershaw blur with the tanto edge, and I think it's jisy fantastic.
@xEBRONx i Would have to disagree with that. CRKT has had some decent models in recent years. In fact out of the 2015 offerings, theres more crkt models I'm interested in than Kershaw
@deemkooo lol.. um... yeah, that'd explain the 300+ i have
dammit... this is a really great knife. CRKT does good stuff, and the only thing bad about this one is... um... I'll get back to you on that.
@alacrity thank you for your opinion
Meh, it's nice and all, I just don't like combo edged knifes. I was really hoping for spectre oem replacement filters for GM 6.0L air boxes.
Serious question. What do people use knives like this for? I can only think of two things:
Is there anything else? I'm serious.
@phatmass just to have
@deemkooo there are dozens of things we do every day that a pocket knife comes in handy for- from opening a box, to mail, shaving off a rough edge on something, prying off a label or even chopping off the 1/3 of asparagus you don't eat instead of paying $6 a lb for it at the store. @G1 a new wife? I tried that- the break-in period's always longer than they say it is...
This Ken Onion makes me cry.
@ChunkyBitz I made me tear-up when I cut that Onion.
There has to be a reason I don't want this. There has to be a reason I don't want this. There has to be a reason I don't want this...
Ah HA no option to clip the knife in tip up carry. No sale for me.
@vrillusions not a valid reason, buy it anyway
Serrations are so task-specific that I can't justify wasting so much usable blade just to have that on hand. Unless you're cutting rope (and lots of it, as a decently sharp knife should have no trouble cutting through the odd rope), I don't see the need. Even then, I'd almost go for this blade [dad wants a combo] if it didn't have that stupid tanto blade. For every tacticool mall-ninja's wet dream in which his tanto tip saves the day, there are countless tasks in which a drop point blade excels. Serrations and tanto together? Talk about a bitch to sharpen...
why do knife specs never list the thickness?
@zxinfinity Seriously...we all know that's more important than length.
@ChunkyBitz unless you live in a place like ill-annoy that says > 3" blade is evilbad and ca be used to send you to jail for longer than burglary or assault, whereas the blade thickness is not considered.
@duodec was referring to overall thickness for fitting into the pocket
@zxinfinity Fair point.
Nice onion skin background today!
@derpandabar I shot it me self. Thanks
Y'all missed the perfect opportunity for a perfect pun...
Put this over the top of the last picture...

@unixrab Really? There''s a product here you don't want? I don't believe it.
@cengland0 Believe it sister
Let me know when you have a lockback instead of every damn variant of liner lock on the planet.
The onion not included ruined this deal for me. If it were included I'd buy three.
@alacrity Exactly ... The older Schrade knives seem to be great quality, but now the outer frame and handles feel almost like cheap plastic
TIL what "tanto" is. Thanks crazy knife people!!
@pajamma Isn't Tanto the sidekick on The Lone Ranger?
@kadagan if yer talkin' bout the last movie- that was Tainto. No relation.
@kadagan Many thanks for the info. Guess the clincher was that the wiki article stated Pam Anderson collects his knives.........good enough for me.
@beachhead no worries yet. If we start seeing refurb HP laptops every day here like over there, well then. . .
@RedOak LOL, well played! But I do believe the concern has some validity.
Just bought one of these for a friend. glassy-awake-genie
But after typing that I can't get this line out of mind:
Well you finally did it meh. I've resisted all the knives you've thrown at me so far. This was the one. You got me this time.
No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
@jrwofuga (over a month late..) you can create Georgia Red with a good knife and a friend :)
Sold out? Oh no, ohno ohnoohnoohnoohnoohnohonohonohonohonohonohohnhnhnhnhnhnhnhm
I have decided that I would like to purchase one of these. Someone kindly cancel your order so that one becomes available for me. Alternately you could hack the user database, get my address, and send yours to me as a baby gift. It gives me a warm a fuzzy feeling to be surrounded by such a Meh community.

@donnameh Can you guide me through how to close it? Thanks.
@deemkooo At the base of the blade is a 1/2 moon recess in the handle. there is a metal spring tab that you depress which allows the blade to close.
@tightwad thank you so much!
@donnameh I definitely love this knife too! I've been using it as my every day carry for a few weeks now. Super sharp!! I couldn't find scissors when I needed to cut out images on paper, so I used this with no issues at all! It replaced my heavier ken onion CRKT knife (which I like more, but it weighed my pants down!!).. haha
