I saw a short trailer for this during the 30 minutes of being held hostage waiting for TROS to start - just went and watched the longer final trailer, looks worth it. It’s in some strange limited release, hard to figure out when and where it’s actually playing around here.
@PooltoyWolf I couldn’t find anyone to go back for a second viewing with me, so I just went to a matinee by myself. It wasn’t as weird as I thought, actually kind of nice to be able to just be there to watch the movie.
@PooltoyWolf Yeah, I thought of that possibility after I posted, sorry to be insensitive. And I am officially empowered to take all the blames this month. Hope you can find a way to get to the theater - it’s a pretty good show!
@stolicat I go to movies by myself all the time. A lot of people I know thinks that’s weird, but honestly, it’s just easier. Trying to plan around people is hard sometimes. I sit at home watching TV by myself, at least going to the movies I’ve left my house and had to get dressed in presentable clothes.
@RiotDemon@stolicat I showed up last night, by myself as usual, and the theater was full of young men sitting alone. That’s unusual. Must be something about the movie.
@RiotDemon@sammydog01@stolicat I was coming here to say that my impression is that the vocal Lovecraft fandom skews masculine. Lots of people love, enjoy or at least actively tolerate Lovecraft, but I mean the people who want you to know. It’s probably the lone-man-realizes-the-ultimate-existential-meaninglessness-of-life-in-the-face-of-inhuman-cosmic-horror-and-goes-insane-and-or-dies thing. No women, and pretty much everyone except for the narrator is stupid/evil/insane/already corrupted by unknowable alien creatures. Also the giant, albino penguins.
@mossygreen@RiotDemon@stolicat It’s kind of funny- at the discussion after the film they said the movie was like Ordinary People with aliens. There was a really nice family dynamic. But that may not have come from the source material.
@RiotDemon@sammydog01@stolicat I don’t remember a nice family dynamic, but the last time I read it my thoughts were mostly THIS IS CLEARLY BASED ON THE TUNGUSKA EVENT, INSPIRED BY INACCURATE NEWS CLIPPINGS OF THE TIME, WHY DOESN’T EVERYONE AGREE WITH ME? But I know the answer to why everyone doesn’t agree with me is because 1) I have not publicized my theory and 2) my entire theory is based on an inaccurate news clipping about the Tunguska Event quoted in a book titled Strange Happenings, which I am not sure is even correct. But it’s so plausible that people were publishing random, made-up accounts of strange plants growing in the wilds of Siberia, because people still love publishing random, made-up accounts of stuff, and the bar to publish is lower than ever!
Sorry, it turns out I have strong, specific feelings about The Colour Out of Space that I needed to shoe-horn into a related discussion.
@RiotDemon@sammydog01@stolicat Sorry, have to correct myself, I suddenly thought was it Strange Happenings or Strange Occurences? So I went to check and it’s Strange Phenomena altogether. I must have been thinking of a Fate Magazine paperback. Now I have to (get to) read it again to make sure it’s the right book.
@mossygreen@RiotDemon@stolicat I just found the complete fiction of Lovecraft in my kindle and queued it up to The Colour out of Space. I’ll read it today.
@RiotDemon@sammydog01@stolicat Ah, but LSD was discovered over a decade after this story was written! Also, interestingly, Lovecraft was a huge teetotaler and there is a sweet and kind of sad story in one of his biographies about how he went to party in New York were the punch was spiked and had a wonderful time, and the host didn’t have the heart to tell him that he’d been drunk. I think it was Frank Belknap Long?
That sounds interesting…
I’m so sorry @sammydog01 : ( I hope you can color in the spaces soon! Keep practicing!
@therealjrn I should have bought those fancy brush markers you and @ruouttaurmind picked up.
It looked like a knockoff of the sci-fi movie Annihilation (2018) with a similar premise and shimmering color sparkle walls.
@mike808 The short story was written in 1927 so I don’t think you could call it a knockoff.
@mike808 I just watched both movies trailers for reference and they seem like absolutely different movies. Not even close to the same premise.
@ecanada I liked Color Out Of Space a lot better- it was pretty strange but the plot was simple and fascinating.
Got tickets for Saturday night!
It showed up in my app but no showings listed.

@stolicat I’m desperate to see TROS at this point before it gets spoiled for me. Nobody can take me and/or wants to go
Also, if I don’t see it soon, it will be the only Star Wars movie I haven’t seen in a theater.

@stolicat My problem is more one of lacking a way to actually get to a theater, heh

@stolicat No offense taken! Have a hug!

@RiotDemon @sammydog01 that sounds kind of spooky.
@RiotDemon @sammydog01 @stolicat
@PooltoyWolf @stolicat I go to the show alone all the time. I agree with @RiotDemon, it is just easier.
@RiotDemon @stolicat Spooky was the day I went to see a horror film and was the only person in the theater. Then the power went out.
@sammydog01 @stolicat Lovecraft is pretty popular among young men for some reason.

@PooltoyWolf @stolicat I went to The Rise of Skywalker alone. I wound up sitting next to a Mandalorian.
I’m not sure he was a real Mandalorian though, he took of his helmet to watch the movie.
@blaineg @stolicat Within my fandom, that’s called ‘ruining the magic’.
@PooltoyWolf
uber, taxi, pay a neighbor

@RiotDemon @sammydog01 @stolicat OK, but if you end up convinced it’s influenced by WWI or the Radium Girls, be prepared for a long, rambling argument.
@mossygreen @RiotDemon @stolicat I finished it. I don’t know about influences from WWI or the radium girls. LSD maybe?
@RiotDemon @sammydog01 @stolicat Ah, but LSD was discovered over a decade after this story was written! Isn’t Nicolas Cage in every movie?
