@Num1Zero@thechilipepper0 Some cars have an accessory socket that is always on. Leaving certain phone charges plugged in there is one way to have a dead battery if you don’t drive every day.
@Num1Zero@thechilipepper0@werehatrack
The draw of most plug-in phone chargers is so little that that really makes very little impact, much like the fact that your on board clock is constantly on in order to stay correct.
My mom’s car gets used once every couple weeks, and has an accessory port that is hot all the time with a phone charger plugged in it that throws an LED light 24/7. I’ve never had trouble getting that car started.
Of course if your battery is crap then YMMV.
@Num1Zero You get a hard-wire kit for them that disconnects the power before the battery is drained. Then it can stay on all the time, but won’t kill the battery if your car doesn’t get driven for a week or two.
@chienfou I, too, now have a charger which draws that little when not actively powering a device or charging a battery, but its predecessor was less well-designed. That one stayed warm to the touch all the time, and would draw the battery down significantly if the car wasn’t started up and driven at least once a week. During the plague lockdown, the problem became apparent.
I do not have one of these, nor do I know if it’s good or crap (although it seems to have been sold by Costco at some point in the past which leans me toward “good” since the last thing I think Costco wants is a million returns on a crappy item), but if I were in the market for such a product, I’d get one with a built-in capacitor (not a battery), so that high cabin temperatures don’t cook the battery (or super-low temps harm it, too?).
To that end, a little something-searching around seems to point to this device having such a (super)capacitor, so that seems like a plus, especially for folks in hot/sunny driving climates.
I bought it the last time it was up. It worked well and then suddenly wasn’t able to receive power anymore, mid road trip. The app also made my phone run at 500 degrees.
Installing a dashcam improperly is jank.
Installing a dashcam properly is time consuming and often involves digging into your car’s interior. Do you know how the device will be powered, day to day? Have you pulled off interior panels from your car to find places for wires to live? Are you familiar with the software? Do you have a plan to manage the camera’s data output?
@806D2701 oh em geeeeeeee hubs and I just installed a dashcam last weekend. two fairly able bodied, college edjumakated adults… 3 hours. and my back still hurts.

For the impatient or unadventurous, it’s
This seems like it came from Destro’s lab
The camera turning on when it detects impact is a nice way for it to turn on and stay on all day when it’s raining and windy.
@AaronLeeJohnson It’s supposed to be installed inside the vehicle.
@AaronLeeJohnson I think it turns off when it detects impact, preserving the events that led up to the smash.
Says that it can record motion when parked, does it have a battery or is that only when the car stays on?
@Num1Zero It draws off the car battery.
@Num1Zero most likely you would need to hardwire it to the car’s electrical

Someone’s been raiding the Cobra warehouse again….
The software that’s supposed to work with it is glitchy, limited.

For the price of new they are better options with 4k technology, you wanna be able to read license plates you need 4k recording
Anyone have experience with wireless versions of dash cams? I hate those wires
Dual View? Are you sure it’s made by Cobra and not Bi-Polaroid?
@lindaahrens I think they have something for that now.
@lindaahrens @werehatrack Can confirm; I’m on high-dose Lithium-ion.
I bought it the last time it was up. It worked well and then suddenly wasn’t able to receive power anymore, mid road trip. The app also made my phone run at 500 degrees.
@jaz853 Wow! Hot enough for the passenger to grill you a (small) steak on the fly!
Again? Are you trying to tell me I need to install the one I bought last time?
@blaineg I resemble that

I “see” the benefit of this item.
