First off, kudos to Mike for putting in a good word for “License To Kill,” which I totally agree deserves more respect, and “The Living Daylights.” HOWEVER I thought “Skyfall” was right down there with “Spectre;” a couple of the dumbest thriller films I’ve EVER seen. I walked out of “The Spy Who Loved Me,” though things got even cornier with the next couple films (I avoided “Octopussy” for years.) Although “For Your Eyes Only” brought the series back to earth, there was still a little too much corn in there for me; while I agree with certain points made here about “Live And Let Die,” I still think it was Moore’s best Bond. I like both “A View To a Kill” AND “The Man With The Golden Gun” though perhaps the latter is a guilty pleasure (it’s worth saying though that Goodnight was Bond’s SECRETARY, not an agent), both have my favorite villains.
Ranking the best is too tough for me. “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” was excellent but ahead of “Casino Royale?” That latter was a stunningly superior film though credit is indeed due to what went before. I certainly would never rank “Goldfinger” behind “Goldeneye,” though the latter is the best of the Brosnan’s imo too. There are certain things about “Thunderball” that rankle me but it has the greatest scenes of the early series. “From Russia With Love” has a more interesting plot, though that’s mostly because “Thunderball” became an over-used template.
There are certain Bond films which, while unfortunate in MANY ways, I would celebrate for other reasons. The stuff Pierce Brosnan had to deal with in “Tomorrow Never Dies!” The costars! The dialogue! The action! There should be some award for Greatest Endurance By An Actor In a Professional Capacity for that one alone, to say nothing of “Die Another Day.”
I just have to mention something I’ve said before; James Bond was a suave spy dressed in A SUIT, A DINNER JACKET, A GRENADINE TIE, A CHESTERFIELD, A MORNING COAT, A TRILBY, A SAFARI JACKET, A BLOUSON, etc etc. Please check out http://www.bondsuits.com/
