Christmas lawn decorations
5Ok I have never been a big lawn decor person but 2020 needs some cheer and my front garden which a year ago had a huge tree taken down and soon will have the summer garden finish will be bare this winter. So I am thinking of some giant winter decoration.
Suggestions? Not too expensive not too griswold

Have you considered hanging Valentine’s Day decorations? It is a winter holiday and probably are very inexpensive. I feel confident if you do, your garden will receive attention.
When we lived in town we once put out a “roadkill reindeer”, basically one of those lit up moving reindeers lying on its side so it looked like it was kicking its legs.
That didn’t go over very well …
I’ve got an inflatable Biker Santa that goes on the lawn, and an inflatable Yoda Santa that goes on the porch.
Last year we retired large (4-5’ tall) metal framed lighted Nativity set that was starting to rust apart.
Large and inexpensive is tough except inflatables.
I slowly buy things on clearance every year to add to my stuff. if I had to buy things at full price I’d probably still only have a single string of lights along my roof line.
Other option is if you make something. A lot of people will make wooden signs and paint them. That’s usually as inexpensive as you can get, but needing more work.

@RiotDemon sorry RD, you hit all my points before I did. I even thought to add the end of season sales (halloween shopped today) but thought that wouldn’t really help for this year. Then again, you could always be a holiday behind. Get the clearance items now, decorate for Halloween at Christmas…when Valentines comes around, you do Christmas and so on. Save a ton of money that way. Might not work in a deed restricted community
@RiotDemon @CaptAmehrican yes, the way to do it is a bit like a Meh sales calendar. Buy your Christmas decorations in the first quarter, be ready for next year. Meh would sell them in summer for best effect, though.
I bought a few of my inflatables on eBay in the off season when they are not extravagant. Sold a few there in season, too. This year I haven’t been feeling it, though. I put out zero for Halloween, may not get around to the Christmas ones either.
@kykazaa all the places I went to sold out of all their Halloween stuff before Halloween. I was surprised.
@RiotDemon well, admittedly I was buying 70% off candy, but agreed there weren’t as many decorations this year
This was a long time ago. We had it until it fell apart. We don’t even do lights anymore.
Big bah humbug for holidays at our house.
@lisaviolet why don’t you do lights?
@LolaHola Too much work.
@lisaviolet oh got you. For me that’s the opposite, I think gonna do only lights this year
All depends on how handy you are. Tons of DIY projects out there if you know how to cut wood. Otherwise big and inexpensive is generally in the inflatable category. Also, check out the antique malls around you, they are getting a lot of the pallet wood type of displays and might be cheaper than Michaels and the big box stores
@kykazaa I feel like we were on the same wavelength.
I was thinking and I remembered an idea I wanted to do. I wanted to make a giant ball frame, like 10 or 12 feet tall, cover it with lights, and look like one giant ornament in our yard. Maybe even make it an archway and set it over the little path to the front door so you walk through it.
Unfortunately, I don’t think it would be either cheap or super easy. Between the actual doing of it and the thoughts of how to do it so it can be reasonably stored the rest of the year, I’ve never gotten around to actually doing it.
@djslack pvc is pretty bendy. You could probably just stake it in with rebar on either end. I’m not sure how many pieces you would need to make a full ball. It comes in 20 ft length so you can make one pretty big. A bucket would be perfect for the ornament cap.
@djslack here are ones made with chicken wire.

Probably could recreate this with 1/2’ pvc.
Add a couple of tees along the way to join the outer and inner circles.
Heat gun to bend it to your will if it’s not bendy enough.
@RiotDemon that last one is a bit like what I pictured. Here’s one I could order from China if I could decipher the options ($100-$10,000, and that picture is no longer on the listing lol)
I actually remember a guy that was building his own roller coaster, he built jigs with the right curvature and filled pvc pipe with hot sand to bend it exactly right.
@djslack that’s a pretty cool ornament but I have a feeling it’s on the high end of that price list. That would be stupid hard to store, I bet.
@djslack @RiotDemon Christmas light balls look alarmingly like festive Christmas covid viruses… I’m almost tempted to do it.

@RiotDemon that’s actually maybe a little more within the amount of effort I’m willing to put into my decorations. Those could be cool.
@djslack I just wonder how long the balls would last out in the sun. I guess you could add air if they get soft.
Maybe get some exercise balls at the thrift store.
Wooden ladder wrapped in lights. From the street or sidewalk, it looks like a Christmas tree! Cheap and fun!
I saw a really neat idea where it was a single strand of light across the gutter that led down to a giant ‘grinch’. Very cool and minimal effort.
The inflatables you can get at all the big box stores are cool too.
