@Lister I know Swift and she is always off key. Studio guys complain they have to correct her pitch all the time. So for that reason I would opt for the other one I’ve never heard of.
Swift is a good songwriter though.
@Lister@tweezak I am a studio guy, but I’ve never recorded or pitch corrected Swift. A friend of mine, another occasional studio guy, though, had reason to tweet her when her site had no actual contact info for anyone (?! - what if we want to book something? What if… anything?) and the site was improperly using libraries from the server of the library rather than downloading it and using it on their own server. It’s kinda like if UPS or Amazon suddenly started using your car to make deliveries: they noted an abrupt increase in traffic that had nothing in particular to do with them and were pretty confused. She was cool about it and got them in touch with the actual people responsible (whose info was supposed to be at least vaguely available, theoretically, anyway - webmaster@ and abuse@ didn’t work) and the issue was resolved. I have no similar anecdotes about Jepsen, and the music is heavily marketed and marketing-influenced in both cases, so I’d have to go with Swift. Even if my fellows in the industry complain about the things marketing insists upon. (Which we all do, actually. Sometimes even marketing.)
Both Taylor and Carly Rae to a lesser extent built their fame with “teen angst” songs, but I thought that there was more message from Janis Ian, though this last never put on the “shows” the other two did.
Listen, if you’re not familiar with this singer:
(too bad the lyrics weren’t proofed before posting the vid)
@shiranissosexy
0:29 valentine’s => valentines (plural noun);
1:21 browned eyed => brown-eyed (compound adjective)
1:41 rich relationed => rich-relationed (compound adjective)
2:06 debitures (no such English word) => debentures (just misheard, I assume)
2:21 payment => payments (typo or misheard?)
2:24 recieved => received (“i before e, except after c…” is no longer taught???)
2:41 valentine’s [again!]
I ignored capitalization and punctuation for the posted lyrics, since that could be considered part of the “style” of the art.
[sigh] I know, it’s my curse.l It apparently bothers me more than things bother Irk. I have trouble trying to avoid proofreading anything I read. (I have to remind myself to proofread anything that I write! I have a tendency to write homophones in place of the correct word. I did that a lot as a math instructor at a blackboard, but usually caught my errors immediately and before my students did.) But I do give the video author an A for intent.
The sad thing is, I just checked and found at least three listings of the lyrics from sites that specialize in such, and apparently none of the errors originated with Janis Ian, but rather the video creator.
Two of the sites did not have the hyphenated adjectives, but https://genius.com/Janis-ian-at-seventeen-lyrics did, so I’m guessing that’s the way Janis Ian wrote it (as grammar would require).
Anybody get an idea of what prompted this poll question especially as to why CR Jepsen?
Did @ - mediocre - bot’s libido get stirred up?
I would’ve expected a choice given between Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga as more likely, based on # hits, money earned, movies appeared in, etc.
@blaineg As much as I enjoy the nostalgic conditioned response I get when I hear Stevie Nicks, she really isn’t that great IMO. At her best (to me) she sounds like her sinuses are blocked. I saw F.M. perform live in the 70’s and she was off-key, late entrances and she didn’t even try to hit the high notes in Rhiannon. Disappointing.
@macromeh@pmarin I saw Fleetwood Mac in the late 80’s. Lindsay Buckingham had just walked and been replaced with Billy Burnette and Rick Vito.
I had no complaints at all about Stevie’s singing, and Mick did some very funny stuff both with the drums, and a vest wired with drum pads.
I am a hopeless Stevie fan, but I don’t love everything she’s done. Some of her later single stuff is horrible. Like many other “stars” she needs a producer or someone that can tell her NO.
Who? Why??
I don’t need to justify myself to you.
For what? Which one to throw off a building?
I chose Swift because I’ve never heard of the other one
@Lister then Call Me, Maybe?

@Wookee Ah, OK, I do know her.
How is “Who?” not a response option?
@hchavers To be fair, Roger Daltry is now 78 and deaf…

@phendrick I must’ve missed the typos. What was wrong with the posted lyrics?

But, I still appreciated the video.
Carly Rae Jepsen but only because she had a MK2 Jetta in the one video I saw.

No.
Need to differentiate between OG Taylor Swift and Modern Taylor Swift. Modern T-Swift is insufferable.
/youtube Billie Holiday
Katy Perry
T Swizzle all day! Carly Rae, no way!

No preference for either, both are talented.
Kate Bush
Stevie Nicks
Karen Carpenter
Aretha Franklin
Grace Slick
Moya Brennan
etc, etc.
In other words, anyone that can actually sing.
@blaineg Linda Ronstadt, a must for your list.

@macromeh man, brutal beat-down of Stevie Nicks.
@pmarin Yeah, that live concert 45 years ago (reinforced later by better quality audio equipment) tainted my opinion for life, I guess.
@macromeh @pmarin I saw Fleetwood Mac in the late 80’s. Lindsay Buckingham had just walked and been replaced with Billy Burnette and Rick Vito.

@phendrick
Yep! The list could (should) have been much longer, but I just rattled off a few that quickly came to mind.
What’s the contest? Arm wrestling? Spelling bee? Death match? Trivial Pursuit? Survivor? Dance-off? Tennis? Horse racing?
It matters. You can’t expect me to guess the winner of a contest if I don’t even know what they’re competing in…
/showme Carly Rae Jepsen or Taylor Swift? (Support your answer in the comments.)
@mediocrebot I don’t see any support for your answer.
