@omally Right. I mean, my first reaction was “how is this better than just mounting my phone on the dash?”. Looked at the product and reviews. Still don’t see how this is better.
@Odysseus1001@omally only two things, the size of the screen and the FM transmitter. Neither of those are worth the price to me personally. I can’t believe this thing doesn’t even have an aux out…
@Macoland@Odysseus1001@olsmeister@omally@stinks Ahh thank you! I obviously agree that an AUX in on this thing is dumb but there are FM Transmitters that do that so I thought maybe that was the brilliant idea here.
@joeywolf so it’s like you got a stereo that supports carplay but it sits above your old stereo that doesn’t support carplay to remind it daily of how inferior it is. But it’s easier and cheaper than installing a stereo that supports carplay for most vehicles.
If you want carplay or android auto, it’s actually a neat idea. But it brings with it some of that 2000s vehicle gadget kludgery. That may be nostalgic for some.
In another year I would probably impulse buy one of these for my older car, but today’s price is above my impulse buy limit. Especially for an electronic device branded for a print magazine that emails me daily but only wants me to look at three articles a month before I have to click “open in incognito tab”.
@djslack@joeywolf Maybe $49.99 and I’d consider adding this to our 2008 VW w/ Aux input. $99 for a device I can’t put a clean copy of Android on and/or requires a physical connection is just a waste;
I would be more interested in this if it could be used as a Dash cam. I’ve been looking for one that is very easy to set up (preferably wireless and doesn’t need mounting strips).
An unknown name like that does not connote a lower expectation of quality for me than a big unrelated name like C&D slapped on some electronics. It actually may be better, because it doesn’t say “licensing cash grab” to me (especially the MSRP of the one here).
@djslack@JT954@phendrick That massive-lump-obscuring-view one is particularly bad-photoshoppy, because it makes the thing look like it’s well over a foot long. Mockup is Made Of Fail.
@dtwsportsfan It transmits audio thru the FM radio, can tune-in SiriusXM, and, most importantly, invokes the phone’s driver friendly CarPlay/Auto UI (bigger buttons, landscape optimized, multiple apps on screen at once - map/active audio player/launcher, better audio Ui).
Enabling the CarPlay or Android Auto UI is the big win.
There’s a reason why the one without wireless is the one that’s on sale - it’s clunky enough running power to it, but then you have to connect a USB cable to your phone. If Meh ever gets a pallet of the Pro version, then I would seriously consider it for older vehicles that can’t fit a smart head unit.
Says it has Bluetooth, does that let it play whatever audio your phone is sending through the stereo via Bluetooth, or are you limited to FM Transmitter or Aux output only?
@xterraguy Bluetooth on devices that can be both inputs and outputs is confusing. There should be a clear designation like Bluetooth in and Bluetooth out.
Some of the turntable-shaped devices in stores say Bluetooth, but it can mean supports playing to a Bluetooth speaker or supports acting as a Bluetooth speaker, and it is rarely clear which that means.
@xterraguy It’s for people like me with an old vehicle that only has an aux port or (even worse) no audio inputs in the factory stereo. And I guess for people who do not want to replace the factory stereo in said vehicles (like myself).
But, there are way cheaper options if you don’t need the screen sitting up on your dash like that.
And I guess for people who do not want to replace the factory stereo in said vehicles (like myself).
@ohhwell@xterraguy Or where the audio and climate controls are fully integrated together and it’s not possible to replace. That has killed a lot of the aftermarket as many vehicles in the past decade or two are integrated.
Suction to my dash? I don’t think so. It’s textured, and none of the pics show it stuck to the windshield. My truck could use this, but my car has a 10" in dash screen that even reads texts to me. I think I’ll just sell my truck.
@Kyser_Soze@troy Those adhesive discs are apparently OK in Ohio, but I’d bet you dinner at Fogo de Chao that parked in the Plano sun in August for a few hours, the adhesive will slime itself loose. So far, adhesive discs are batting .000 down here in Houston for this. I know one person who got a disc to stick to their dash, by removing the original 3M VHB double-stick and using an aviation epoxy to mount the disc to the dash surface. It held so well that when the midsummer heat hit and the expansion differentials kicked into high gear, the patch of dash skin sheared loose and hole dam ting fall off.
i have the latest version of this ( du-1000 if i remember right ) AND it works 100%…
i couldnt see spending $1600 to add apple car play/android auto to my 2013 ram 1500…
the latest version is wireless so no cables necessary to connect to the 5" u-connect OR to connect the phone to the unit itself and the included mount is long enough that it hangs over the dash and down in front of the stock u-connect so i have my apps and in particular waze at my fingertips… i caught a sale in january of 2022 and paid $256 with tax on amazon… AGAIN well worth the money in my opinion…
been a year so there may be an even newer version than the one i bought
If it had a dongle that plugged into the OBDII port, so it could give me real time readouts of some of the drive train function data, I’d be all over it. But my phone has a screen the same size. I don’t use the Google voice assistant because I hate it, I don’t use Bluetooth for audio, and I basically don’t use my phone for much of anything except maps. And I bought a long stalk mount that I’m installing to improve its functionality for that, for $30. A suction cup mount on the dash would not be an improvement, those always fall off in our climate.
@Kidsandliz Many dashboards have enough slope to keep it below the sight line unless you put it directly in front of the driver, and even then, there may be enough room to keep it below the view of traffic -if the driver is tall enough. In other words, I suspect that the people involved in the concept design were all tall dudes.
@zacks I spent about $400 total and hours of my time to put a CarPlay head unit in my 2015 car when i bought it used in 2018, if this existed then I would have paid $200 for it in a second, I think the price change might reflect all the competition in the market now
When I’m charging my phone and connect it to the aux jack in my truck, there’s a feedback “buzz”. Using a Bluetooth adapter with the aux port is a little better, but it’s still there.
Does anybody know if this device has good filtering in its power supply to prevent this issue?
@whatthehellever I have had that issue as well and it drove me up the wall. And yeah the bluetooth adapters I tried all relayed the noise from their power.
This little guy here is the first one I have tried that has zero noise. I hope posting an amazon link is ok…
@Targaryen@whatthehellever More likely just a noisy device in the vehicle; there are so many things that can generate an electrical hum, starting with the various electric motors. Alternator noise is usually a variable-frequency whistle that goes up the scale with engine speed, but a constant-tone hum is more often a motor.
@Targaryen@whatthehellever Given that the Bluetooth adapter propagates the noise into the system, the filtering - or, more effectively, filtering and isolation - needs to be on the power side.
@Targaryen@whatthehellever Better: Get an isolator that electrically separates the entire power socket from the device, with zero signal pass-through and no ground commonality. It’s like a firewall for noise. I haven’t needed one in a while, but I know they used to exist.
I was just reading a blog about this subject and got the nine inch Aphqua referenced in there last week. I have an Android phone and want to use Android Auto to get Google Maps navigation, play music, etc in the car’s display. This works flawlessly on the screen of my Sienna, but my Tesla doesn’t support Android Auto and I don’t want to use Tesla built-in navigation, etc.
In the Tesla, this sort of solves my problem. I can use Bluetooth to connect to the screen. As Tesla disallows Bluetooth connection except with phones, I can’t connect my screen to the Tesla via Bluetooth. Tesla also has no Aux audio so my only remaining option is to use the built-in FM transmitter. (I can still use my phone as the key for the Tesla without connecting to it via Bluetooth.) This solution is not elegant and has drawbacks. But I do get Google Maps navigation, audio, etc displayed on the screen and accompanying sound coming out of the car’s speakers. Still deciding if it is worth the hassle.
APHQUA A2 Newest Portable Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Car Radio Stereo with Sunshade, 7 inch IPS Touchscreen Bluetooth 5.0 Hands Free Call, Mirror Link/GPS/Siri for All Vehicles & Trucks
Just installed mine today and it works better than my fm transmitter as far as sound quality goes. Wireless CarPlay would be nice but at least my phone is getting charged while it’s plugged in.
This was a good solution for my Lexus GX470 since it has built in HAVC controls on the display so I can’t upgrade my head unit.
When I go camping this thing will look awesome in my ‘82 Chevy diesel pickup.
Just got ours; physically everything was fine, but we couldn’t get Android Auto to work on either my wife’s or my phone. But then we thought of the stupid option and unplugged and plugged back in the Intellidash+, and now it’s working perfectly. We put this in our old 2008 Sienna, so as long as it keeps working, we’re super happy with this.
@lhedbor Waze is my preferred app, and it works on the unit I received. If you’re on the multi-tile doodad screen that it uses with Google Maps (map, music, other thing), touch the circular button with a bunch of squares on it to get to the launcher and choose Waze from there if it shows up. I’ve also been able to give Android Auto the voice command “Switch to Waze” and it worked (though that was in an actual car with AA).
Googling “android auto waze not showing up” shows several possible solutions.

Wireless CarPlay or wired CarPlay?
@Comedian Wired. Amazon has wireless version for $286 I think.
@Comedian looks like wired-only based on the linked Amazon listing
Or I could just use my phone
@omally I’m gonna stick to my cassette adapter and Garmin.
@omally Right. I mean, my first reaction was “how is this better than just mounting my phone on the dash?”. Looked at the product and reviews. Still don’t see how this is better.
@Odysseus1001 @omally UI is targeted for use when driving. Also probably legal places handheld phone operation ain’t.
@Odysseus1001 @omally Most phones don’t have a 7" screen.
@Odysseus1001 @omally Random YouTuber agrees with me. Yay.
@omally @ThinkerT True, my iPhone apparently has a 6 inch screen. So this one screen is a bit larger: http://www.displaywars.com/6-inch-16x9-vs-7-inch-16x9. Not sure it’s worth $100 to replace my current dashboard phone mount.
@Odysseus1001 @omally only two things, the size of the screen and the FM transmitter. Neither of those are worth the price to me personally. I can’t believe this thing doesn’t even have an aux out…
@Odysseus1001 @ohhwell @omally But it does have aux out.
@Odysseus1001 @ohhwell @omally @stinks
Ports: AV (in), Aux Port (in), TF Card Port, USB Port (out), AC Port (in)
Specs only indicate AUX in. I agree AUX out would make it more useful.
@Macoland @Odysseus1001 @ohhwell @omally @stinks It’s a typo. What the heck would it do with an Aux in port? Anyway, see page 3 of the user guide. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/B1o4Z-lSa7S.pdf
@Odysseus1001 @omally @ThinkerT Most phones DO have a 6" screen, like your typical $150-200 Motorola
@omally Or, I could just use my car. Most Fords have a built in program that does most of this.
@ironcheftoni
FIFY…
@finalremix Agree. What would I do without the constant rhythmic clicking of the cassette adapter?
@finalremix @ParadisePete I found ones that didn’t continuously trigger the autoreverse, but I don’t have a vehicle with a cassette player anymore.
@Macoland @Odysseus1001 @olsmeister @omally @stinks Ahh thank you! I obviously agree that an AUX in on this thing is dumb but there are FM Transmitters that do that so I thought maybe that was the brilliant idea here.
@chienfou yeah, most Fords… my 2013 Edge has it. My 2001 Escape did not.
@ironcheftoni
2001<2013 much more likely to be in newer cars than older ones…
@Odysseus1001 @omally @ThinkerT bruh my s23 ultra comes damn close
How is this so much different/better than a dash-mounted phone holder?
@joeywolf so it’s like you got a stereo that supports carplay but it sits above your old stereo that doesn’t support carplay to remind it daily of how inferior it is. But it’s easier and cheaper than installing a stereo that supports carplay for most vehicles.
If you want carplay or android auto, it’s actually a neat idea. But it brings with it some of that 2000s vehicle gadget kludgery. That may be nostalgic for some.

More distracted drivers!
So, for $20 I can get a suction cup phone holder. This does $80 worth of what more? Sorry.
I already regert this, but not quite as badly as I regert not getting CarPlay on my Accord originally.
You should sell these to GM in bulk for their EVs.
/giphy enchanting-alike-key
@stinks
@andymand @stinks
But does it play 8-tracks?
@benj and 9-tracks too!
This is a must-have if you’re buying a Ford EV.
@grammarsheriff
Sorry… I don’t follow you…?
@chienfou Ford is dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from its EVs.
@chienfou @grammarsheriff GM is dropping it. Ford has said they are keeping it. (See the comment above about buying in bulk for GM)
@grammarsheriff
Think you meant to say GM is dropping car play… not FORD
@grammarsheriff @jonjen2
Thank you…! Exactly
@jonjen2 Ah, you’re right. My bad.
I would be more interested in this if it could be used as a Dash cam. I’ve been looking for one that is very easy to set up (preferably wireless and doesn’t need mounting strips).
@JT954 https://www.seicane.com/car-dvr-wireless-carplay-android-auto-adas-wifi-aux-dash-cam-gps-fm-rearview-camera-video-h041
tho I have no experience with this product or site
@JT954 @phendrick Impressive find!
An unknown name like that does not connote a lower expectation of quality for me than a big unrelated name like C&D slapped on some electronics. It actually may be better, because it doesn’t say “licensing cash grab” to me (especially the MSRP of the one here).
Some of these photos made me chuckle, too.
@djslack @JT954 @phendrick That massive-lump-obscuring-view one is particularly bad-photoshoppy, because it makes the thing look like it’s well over a foot long. Mockup is Made Of Fail.
Will it work on my Metro farecard?
I would get this for my wife, but do I really want to teach her how to use another gadget?
@hchavers She’s already replaced you with one device, don’t take away your co-pilot duties as well.
@hchavers @mcanavino Bazinga!
Huh, maybe buying a 2024+ GM electric vehicle could be an option then…
Except for it has a slightly larger screen than my cell, what does it do that my cell can’t do.
@dtwsportsfan @mwarren Phone can do SiriusXM.
@annecat @dtwsportsfan @mwarren Why would anyone want SiriusXM with it’s ~64kbit audio from the 90s
@annecat @caffeineguy @dtwsportsfan @mwarren Hard to tell the bitrate difference in my 2007 with the windows down because the AC doesn’t work.
There’s a reason why the one without wireless is the one that’s on sale - it’s clunky enough running power to it, but then you have to connect a USB cable to your phone. Says it has Bluetooth, does that let it play whatever audio your phone is sending through the stereo via Bluetooth, or are you limited to FM Transmitter or Aux output only?
Looks like it will only pair with the phone, so audio out is either the shitty built-in speakers or the FM/Aux route only.

@Kyser_Soze The video shows it stuck to the windshield.
@Kyser_Soze It comes with a smooth adhesive disc to stick to your dash, and you put the suction cup on that.
@Kyser_Soze @troy Those adhesive discs are apparently OK in Ohio, but I’d bet you dinner at Fogo de Chao that parked in the Plano sun in August for a few hours, the adhesive will slime itself loose. Man that is soooo meh. I will stick with my cheap Bluetooth to 1/8" trs device and a mount for my phone.
@ohhwell Manual says it has aux-out to connect to your car’s stereo; Aux-in is a typo.
@ohhwell Yeah amazon reviews also indicate you connect to your car stereo via the aux port.
@caffeineguy @alexjhew Thanks guys. So less meh but still… kinda meh.
@caffeineguy @ohhwell Mine connects with my aux port just fine. I can play Sirius XM on my auto speakers.
can i watch netflix?
@kvs2000 Only if you have a Tesla to blame for your life choices.
@kvs2000
Can you? Probably
Should you? Definitely not!

@werehatrack Obviously, you are not talking about the current political climate, because that makes every thing suck exceedingly.
@phendrick Ayup.
Why would one want it blocking your view out of the windshield and creating a blind spot?
@Kidsandliz Many dashboards have enough slope to keep it below the sight line unless you put it directly in front of the driver, and even then, there may be enough room to keep it below the view of traffic -if the driver is tall enough. Is there is a reason it was $350 last year and only $99 today? My guess is yes!!!
@zacks I spent about $400 total and hours of my time to put a CarPlay head unit in my 2015 car when i bought it used in 2018, if this existed then I would have paid $200 for it in a second, I think the price change might reflect all the competition in the market now
@oldmantick @zacks
And wired vs BT…
@oldmantick @zacks Idk, I put one in I got from Crutchfield and it was well worth it… as long as you aren’t old and want to listen to CDs.
I did pay them to prewire the harness though.

When I’m charging my phone and connect it to the aux jack in my truck, there’s a feedback “buzz”. Using a Bluetooth adapter with the aux port is a little better, but it’s still there.
Does anybody know if this device has good filtering in its power supply to prevent this issue?
@whatthehellever something like this might help you. I’ve not vetted this particular one, just the first example I clicked on: https://a.co/d/106Itgw
@whatthehellever I have had that issue as well and it drove me up the wall. And yeah the bluetooth adapters I tried all relayed the noise from their power.
This little guy here is the first one I have tried that has zero noise. I hope posting an amazon link is ok…

@whatthehellever I’m not tech support but that sounds like a feedback loop maybe?
@Targaryen @whatthehellever More likely just a noisy device in the vehicle; there are so many things that can generate an electrical hum, starting with the various electric motors. Alternator noise is usually a variable-frequency whistle that goes up the scale with engine speed, but a constant-tone hum is more often a motor.
@werehatrack @whatthehellever Would something like this help then?

@Targaryen @whatthehellever Given that the Bluetooth adapter propagates the noise into the system, the filtering - or, more effectively, filtering and isolation - needs to be on the power side.
@werehatrack @whatthehellever So then maybe stopping into a car audio shop and seeing about getting some shielding installed?
@Targaryen @whatthehellever Better: Get an isolator that electrically separates the entire power socket from the device, with zero signal pass-through and no ground commonality. It’s like a firewall for noise. I haven’t needed one in a while, but I know they used to exist.

@werehatrack There are a lot of things I love about the car and some that I don’t.
@dpease Ooof. That one claims wireless for $140.
@stinks yeah that would have worked too but I wanted all nine inches
Wrong “40-second video that might help” methinks….
I shelled out for a vent holder with not only wireless charging, but a little motor and battery to grip the phone. Cheap Chinese junk ofc.
Was half expecting it to die in 6 months, or become half-assed unusable, but it’s been trooping along nicely.

@jwoody27 Thanks! I was hoping not to have to buy a new cord. Oh well.
