California Holy Fire
17The Holy Fire in Southern California is a beast. Or rather, several beasts in the same area.
Holy Fire Explodes To 4,100 Acres, 5% Contained
Causing evacuations and pulling on the resources of CA’s fire departments and volunteers.
If you’re local, you know how bad the fires usually get. If you’re not, welcome to fire season in Southern California. If you’re in an evac area, get your pets and get out of there.

One of my coworkers is in the evacuation area.
There’s a blanket of smoke covering the sky for the past couple days here.
@narfcake The pictures from my mom’s place are pretty scary.
@Thumperchick I hope things end up ok for her and the smoke doesn’t make it impossible to breath.
POST APO. OMG. EVERYBODY QUIT SMOKING
Lots of mandatory evacuations
I just sold a house in sycamore and my good friend has a house in horse thief. Hope they get it contained soon.
@Ignorant Glad you sold your house prior to the fire. Not good for whom you sold it to though… but at least you won’t be potentially burned out.
Didn’t know you were a denizen of the IE @thumperchick
This was arson, plane and simple
@Cerridwyn I grew up there. Looks like they caught the guy that lit 2 fires. He’s… Not well.
@Thumperchick
yeah, and quickly.
smoke’s been stretching far and wide from it too.
We are just blessed it hasn’t gotten as bad as the ones up north. Wild fires can be quite scary
These fires are horrible. When I lived in northern ID there was a major fire that came within 2 miles of the town I lived in. The smoke was horrible but it only burned for a couple of weeks on our side of the fire. That was bad enough and it wasn’t even remotely like these enormous infernos going on all over CA (and a few other states). I really feel for everyone who has to deal with these year after year after year. The stress must be terrible. My cousin is near an evacuation zone right now. Although he hasn’t been told to leave yet, he figures it is coming soon so drove a good distance to get a uhaul, packed a bunch of stuff in it, and is ready to go.
Last summer a niece lived near one but far enough away that they only dealt with smoke. My best friend has had to evacuate several times over the years (but never has burned). Another cousin talked about how, as a kid, they’d have to pack up and leave (they lived in one of the canyons near LA where there are frequently fires) and her parents had told the kids that they each could pack only one book box sized box full of stuff and that is all they got to save. They’d pack and then leave their packed boxes by the door until the crisis was over. They’d also have car packing drills to get it down to under 3 min to pack the car and get out. I think they actually had to evacuate twice. As a kid I used to think how hard that would be to have to do that and how anxiety producing the entire thing would be (and made me glad I lived in the midwest).
I hope your mom (and home town) are, in the end, missed by this. Hurricanes, big fires… not good stuff.
I’m in so cal. We’re good so far. Was in Mammoth least weekend soooo smokey from the fires 14 miles away
Town had Ash everywhere. Stay safe northern friends.
Wish all the people down there well.
I’m gonna have to head down through the Northern Ca fires soon. There’s no route that isn’t besieged by fire.
Dreading it, but trip can’t wait - it’s my mother’s 90th bday.
Just ordered smoke masks.
@kdemo Oh crap- good luck and please keep us posted?
Thank you, @sammydog01
@kdemo Maybe fly instead?
#holyfire -NEW EVACUATIONS
MANDATORY - for Elsinore: in effect for all homes on the mountainside of Lake St and southwest of Grand Ave to Ortega Hwy
VOLUNTARY - for the Shoreline community
(Voluntary evacuations mean you should start preparing to leave. If you feel threatened you should leave immediately. This could change to mandatory at anytime. If that occurs your timeframe to leave is NOW.)
@thumperchick - how is your mom (and your home town) with respect to what this fire is doing?
@Kidsandliz Both are doing pretty well. Only 1 structure lost in the area. Mom never had to evac, though she said the smoke was bad enough to make her take it easy. Containment is well underway.
@Thumperchick I am glad your own personal corner of the world for that disaster seems to have more or less escaped. I feel bad for all those who didn’t.
@Kidsandliz same. This one was bad.
