Booh! Are you scared yet?
4i was thinking the other night, which sense are most people frightened most by?
this came to me when i was alone in my place that is being renovated with music blasting in the headphones, all the doors locked so no one can enter, vacuum cleaner going, i was deep in thought untangling the vacuum cord…
when, BAM!!! my wife/husband/spouse touches me on the shoulder from behind.
i jumped right out of my skin! now had my spouse been able to get my attention visually, or ‘sonicly’, or with smell (ewe), or taste (???) it may have been less frightening.
so for me i think touch is the worst.
i used to scream out in suspenseful movies when watching at home with the kids, just at the right time to scare them, now they’ve come to expect it.
next time you see me, please try to get my attention visually before tapping me on the shoulder soldier

Sloths are one of my top liked creatures.
Long term failure that would appear as the sum of my life would scare me a bit. Or doing some unintended monstrous harm, by accident, action, failure to act, or failure to foresee. Or doing monstrous harm deliberately, thru moral failure.
Or losing someone I care for deeply way way too early, when quite young.
Those would be the worst to live with.

@Yoda_Daenerys the last time I remember really jumping was when someone snuck up on me, grabbed my calf quickly with their fingertips, and made loud noises like a dog was attacking.
@PlacidPenguin be sure to listen with headphones, and the volume has to be up pretty high since the clues are like whispers, it’s really difficult to find all the clues, but if you are as observant as you seem, you may notice the clues in the picture’s background…

Touch is probably the most scary, since all your other senses have failed you if someone/something gets to the point of touching you unnoticed. But hearing is damn good at creeping you out, especially in an already creepy situation where you may be on edge anyway.

for me, sound is the scariest surprise

@Yoda_Daenerys I started to agree with touch but I have been freaked out by sound and the unseen before. As an example; I once worked at a hotel/ restaurant that was said to be haunted - I was working graveyard one night and there were hardly any guests staying in the hotel so I decided to vacuum - it was the middle of the night, I was bored, and I could close a door to keep down the noise. So I’m vacuuming away and then I swear I hear someone say my name close to my ear- I turn around but I’m still completely alone. I drop the vacuum, sprint across the lobby and stand frozen behind the front desk for hours. Not being able to see who or what was in the room with me scared the shit out of me.
@Yoda_Daenerys IDK. Sometimes my being tagged makes sense, other times I’m just like “wut?”
There’s nothing like a good ol’ unidentified mystery sound to really give me the willies.
@Yoda_Daenerys Probably touch, though recently both of my cats have taken to sneaking up on me and tapping my arm or shoulder when I’m sitting in my desk chair watching TV and/or doing computers stuff.

In the past though, I haven’t really “celebrated” Thanksgiving for one reason or another.
@PlacidPenguin I don’t ‘celebrate’ either, but we’re making deep-fried turkey and my mashed potatoes are award-winning (if I ever submitted them to a cook-off they would be.)

@Yoda_Daenerys I have been considering the question…being a younger sibling, I have learned to take up a defensive position whenever I settle somewhere…so it is quite hard to sneak up on me. If I am going to be spooked, I think it would be a sound. My husband has the propensity to coming up behind me when I am deep in thought and scaring me with his deep voice…but it takes a good combination of my focus and his timber to scare me.
@mikibell and not one person called you out on the Freudian slip typo…it is timbre…not timber – two VERY different meanings!
Scared or startled? Because my sense of expectation* can leave me scared, but I have been startled by both sight and sound.
*As in if I am in a situation where I feel I ought to be scared, I will find things scary.

Well, taste and smell don’t seem particularly applicable. Plenty of things taste or smell gross, just not… scary. I guess if you were the victim on an old-timey detective show, the taste of almonds would be pretty scary, but it seems a different sort of scare than a ‘Boo!’
Touch seems to make the most sense, but I think I’m personally kind of desensitized to it. I think it’s a toss-up between sound and sight… plenty of loud, crazy sounds leave me entirely unfazed while I’ve jumped at others and been utterly confused as to why. And I let my eyes wander quite a bit which often leads to my being entirely startled by something or someone innocuous right in front of me.
Of course, on a theoretical level, the idea of ESP is eerie as all get-out to begin with. I imagine being startled in such a way would be the ultimate startle.

The last time I actually grabbed my gun was because something unidentified hit my front door hard enough to crack it.
I have a sheriff that lives across the street now, so I’m even less worried than I was before that happened.

I remember another time I was dog sitting… And the dog randomly got up and started barking like mad. That freaked me out.
I think I’m more afraid of the unknown, versus the sound.
