Durian. You can smell it from miles but it’s actually edible. Good if made into tarts or cookies. That the widest gap of smell to taste of any food I’ve ever eaten.
I have have had this idea, lately, to try natto, fermented soy beans. After seeing a video of a ten year old devouring this as those around complained about the smell. I just haven’t had ability to push the “But now with one click” button.
@davido My brother said that somebody brought natto to his office for lunch once and he had to prop open the doors to breathe, and another employee threw up
@davido convient stores in Japan have all kind of great rice balls and my fav was tuna fish. Problem was I couldn’t read Japanese and my fav looked like natto from the outside. Picked natto once or twice - can’t really smell it or see it once wrapped but bitting into it tasting something like vomit let me know my mistake!
Thai was already mentioned, but it is the fish sauce that gives it that horrible/wonderful effect. I nominate fish sauce. Like soy sauce with an odor, but so much better. Don’t know how anything that can smell so bad can taste so good! (Also, previously noted, durian.)
@enville You can buy a soy sauce product mixed with fish sauce in Asia. I mix my own by adding just a little bit of the fish sauce to soy. Very good over rice, noodle, soup dishes.
Camembert. I always take some, very ripe, when I fly away from France. I open it to have a snack on the flight, and everyone wonders…“Who DID that?” (But, boy, it’s delicious.)
cabage?
@clonetek
@clonetek lol, whoops. Fixed.
@dseanadams lol

@AlexJones If under a different name you have been goat you are at risk to be goated again. Just ask @Kittysprinkles about that…
Didn’t the world just (rightfully) ban you?
Well, not technically a food…
I think it’s cabBage
Brissels speouts don’t smell bad if you sauté them with garlic and bacon
@katbyter Way to bury the lede.
ProTip: Start with bacon. The rest … Just. Doesn’t. Matter.
Cheese.
Cheese shaped feet
Durian. Delicious. Supremely stinky.
Ripe Papaya!
I haven’t had it in years, but my dad use to make Lutefisk.
@TheCO2 they said good tasting
@unksol HAHA! I thought it was good, but that was about 100 years ago.
Um, how about “nothing”? My taste buds trust my nose implicitly.

My wife hates it when I bring this home.
Camembert. Tastes like magical tangy cheesy goodness, smells like gangrene.
@ZeroCharisma Limberger.
Kimchi. Smells like a fart, but tastes divine.
@tyxnight agreed
Durian smells like dirty old socks but tastes good

@enville Good one! It smells horrible and makes Thai food taste so good…

Pad thai often smells like wet dog, but damn is it delicious.
If it smells that bad, I’ll never taste it to find out if it’s any good.
@lseeber too bad for you
@Crood I know.
Honestly I really dislike the smell of cooking pork. Smells like sweat socks.
Camembert. I always take some, very ripe, when I fly away from France. I open it to have a snack on the flight, and everyone wonders…“Who DID that?” (But, boy, it’s delicious.)
The general category of fish would get my vote, but some of the best Buffalo wings smell pretty rank.
Not sure what Brit is doing in this gif but yeah, these cheesy puff things. The Jax brand was particularly smelly.
@denboy

Cabage
Boiled eggs? People always say they smell like farts. Maybe those people eat a lot of eggs and their farts smell like eggs? Who knows.
Durian
@ElEmpty Yeah, this is particularly terrible.
This isn’t a food per se, but the odor of sesame oil is revolting. Doesn’t show up in the final dish.
