@Kyeh Ummm… nice name for a band, but there is no such thing as Manhattan clam chowder; it’s Manhattan clam soup. Tomatoes never come anywhere near chowder. - a coastal New Englander
@ItalianScallion I’m sure the New Yorkers disagree with you - but I definitely do prefer the creamy New England variety.
I tend not to like tomatoes with seafood in general, the tomato is too overpowering.
@Kyeh Considering that chowder in the US was originally from New England, it seems to me that we get to define what it is. Sorry, New Yorkers! And I’ll note that, to me, Rhode Island red clam chowder (it adds tomatoes to the delicious broth-based clam chowder) isn’t real chowder either. Some things you just gotta stand up for!
@ItalianScallion Hah, so it’s like Champagne? No bubblies from anywhere else can be called champagne, and no clam soups that aren’t milk based can be chowder? What do you think of corn chowder - is that okay because it’s creamy, or not, because it’s clamless?
@Kyeh Yep, like champagne and prosecco. Corn chowder is fine. Fish chowder is especially ok, especially Legal Seafood’s fish chowder, but no tomatoes. Chowders don’t have to contain milk or cream. For example, Rhode Island clam chowder is broth-based. (That’s all I knew growing up in R.I.)
@ItalianScallion But you’ll allow Rhode Island to keep calling theirs “chowder?” Even with added tomatoes? Just trying to get it straight, here! It’s complicated!
@Kyeh It’s only the red version of R.I. chowder that has tomatoes. R.I. chowder, with no qualifications in its name, doesn’t have tomatoes. In fact, I had never heard of red R.I. chowder until I was looking up different kinds of chowders earlier today. Here’s what R.I. clam chowder looks like
