Soy “milk” is not quite tolerable, and the rest are even less so IMO. At least soy can be converted to tofu, which is a useful substance for certain culinary purposes.
Sure, people have called me a soy boy for years (bc it’s my favorite brand of tofu), but I almost never drink it. But my wife and kids still prefer soy milk.
The healthiest, I believe, or at least if you think about history, way way before humanity took it upon themselves to find the tiny little teats on soy, oat, hemp, cashew, almond or rice and start milking them. The only milk that we had was human milk. It’s the first thing that baby mammals were traditionally fed from birth until they can handle anything else.
That being said I don’t ever plan to drink anymore human milk in my life, the first year or so was good enough for me. Nor am I suggesting that we should start harvesting human milk in abundance to make things like human cheese or have human milk with our cereal, coffee etc. it just seems like our bodies should be best equipped for the milk of our own species. That’s all I’m getting at…
@blaineg Yeah, I spotted that, too. All I’ll say is that the kitten I bottle-fed certainly wasn’t. (Not that I had the option. Inducing lactation is a major task.)
@olperfesser So sayeth the FDA, and thus it is now written. One outfit branded itself as “The Not Company”, making NotMilk. Dunno how that’s gonna work for them in the long run, but apparently they’re running with it for the moment.
In coffee, oat milk and coconut milk are both fantastic, maybe even better than regular milk. I can’t say I’ve tried any of the dairy alternatives just straight up in a glass.
I’m on a restricted protein diet. Oat milk all the way. Low protein, and the extra creamy versions have the best milky texture. Tastes like oatmeal, nothing wrong with that.
A lot of it depends on what you’re doing with it, and how it’s made. I’m going to focus a little bit on what I know about oat milk because it’s the only non-dairy milk that I ever used. Oat milk and Oatley we’re created to give a non-dairy milk to the coffee industry. He raged the oats and played with them in selective breeding to come up with one that made what he wanted. And then it has a lot of stuff added to it so that it will actually foam like Rich cow’s milk does. Nut milks don’t do that. If you end up with an oat milk such as the one made by MALK for that you can make it home then you end up with one that’s basically just oats water and salt and yes it has a oatmeal taste to it. And I use it actually to make oatmeal because it makes it richer
I actually like rice milk; I have a sweet tooth and it’s naturally a bit sweet.
Cashew milk is decadent, but expensive.
Coconut milk can be decadent (make sure it’s mostly pulp and not just coconut water with thickeners).
Goat and yak milk I find to be close enough to cow milk that the higher price doesn’t justify it.
Oat milk is a good substitute, especially the creamier (greasier) variants.
Almond milk I find is like soy milk: just barely above skim milk and not expected to be actual milk.
I have only tried almond and oat. So far the oat is the better of the two but they both suck compared to whole milk.
E) None of the above
@2many2no I 100% agree
@2many2no @mycya4me Yep
@2many2no Yes - give me real milk or nothing.
No milk. I hate milk.
Soy “milk” is not quite tolerable, and the rest are even less so IMO. At least soy can be converted to tofu, which is a useful substance for certain culinary purposes.
Coconut milk is great
And makes awesome whipped cream.
It’s got high fat content which makes it closer to dairy milk for me anyway.
HIKING! VIKINGS! STRIKE KING [BRAND FISHING LURES]! AWESOME!
Goat milk is a decent alternative. Everything else is a lab creation. Yuck.
@hchavers These have been around since at least the 1300s, and labs are pretty great.
@hchavers Lab milk???
@hchavers To me, goat milk (and cheese) tastes just like goats smell, and I can’t get past that.
Yo Mamma’s
@ebatch yep it is the BEST!
Sure, people have called me a soy boy for years (bc it’s my favorite brand of tofu), but I almost never drink it. But my wife and kids still prefer soy milk.
Real milk or no milk for me. I usually don’t buy or drink any milk but if I do it’s 2% or better.
@jwoody27 ⋝3.5% or GTFO, as far as I’m concerned.
Hemp milk is tasty.

@sicc574 yep I agree!
@sicc574 Lemme see if I’ve got this straight: all baby mammals are fed human milk from birth?
@blaineg Yeah, I spotted that, too. All I’ll say is that the kitten I bottle-fed certainly wasn’t. (Not that I had the option. Inducing lactation is a major task.)
@blaineg @werehatrack
So how IS that kitten?
@blaineg @Kyeh He was handed off to his new servant as soon as he was fully weaned, and has been diligently training her ever since.
@blaineg @werehatrack Well, that was a real success story!
@blaineg @Kyeh He taught me a great deal. I’m much better prepared for the next one. And there will inevitably be a next one.
Shouldn’t Milk of Magnesia be on that list?
And I am surprised that nobody has brought up Harvey Milk.
Coconut milk. But not the stuff in the can with the layer of fat in it.
/giphy milking cat for milk
my favorite is hemp milk
“Milk is from mammals” Everything else is a colloidal suspension, not a milk.
@olperfesser So sayeth the FDA, and thus it is now written. One outfit branded itself as “The Not Company”, making NotMilk. Dunno how that’s gonna work for them in the long run, but apparently they’re running with it for the moment.
Water.
@blaineg For drinking, absolutely. For cooking with, substituting milk with water usually doesn’t work out so well.
In coffee, oat milk and coconut milk are both fantastic, maybe even better than regular milk. I can’t say I’ve tried any of the dairy alternatives just straight up in a glass.
@mschuette I’m a fan of almond milk in coffee, although I prefer doubling down on de-veganing my coffee by adding eggnog.

Coconut. Yes, please. Though a matcha with oat milk is not a bad day.
Macadamia!
Enriched non-GMO unsweetened soy.
Beer…
If you can call that other crap milk I can call beer milk!
@chienfou Why just call it milk?
@chienfou @yakkoTDI you put that on your Rice Krispies don’t you
@pakopako @yakkoTDI
I actually like rice milk; I have a sweet tooth and it’s naturally a bit sweet.
