@Kyeh
You can build for wind, but water is a whole other matter.
‘Back in the day’ when beach houses were typically cinder block construction, when you evacuated for a hurricane you left the doors open (front and back) and shoveled out the sand after the storm.
For some reason we keep insisting on building in areas that are subject to flooding/storm surge then get all surprised when they get wiped out in a storm.
Just a swangin
Well just a swangin
Little Charlotte she’s as pretty
As the angels when they sang
I can’t believe I’m out here
On the front porch in the swang
Just-a-swangin
@edguyver14 Shellac is fine indoors, but you need varnish on a deck or patio out in the weather. Or at least a really good outdoor-rated oil-based stain. Just sayin’.
It’s been a while since your post, but I wanted to offer some insight. If you’re looking to enhance your deck or porch, a multi-functional option is a fire pit table. It’s a centerpiece that adds both warmth and ambiance, perfect for gatherings or a quiet evening outside. Alternatively, something like a hammock or swing chair can be a relaxing addition, offering comfort and a cozy vibe.
Gargoyles.
@yakkoTDI THAT is what my house is missing!
@yakkoTDI Hey - me too!
@macromeh Good to see I am not the only one that knows.
I have neither a deck nor a porch, only a lowly patrio. But maybe patios are about to come back into fashion…
@00 Same here.
@00 @Kyeh
They are all the rage in SW Florida right now…

@chienfou I’m not interested in living there, that’s for sure.

@hchavers You, sir, will be a diamond someday.
@hchavers @phendrick What, are you calling him an old lump of coal?
@lisaviolet @phendrick I get the sense that someone does not remember that song.
@hchavers @phendrick
@hchavers
@hchavers @lisaviolet But that someone was not me: I remember both (I was not conflating them). One suggested the other.
@hchavers @lisaviolet I think some of his previous posts suggested he might be a bit chunky.
Picnic table. Not a table and chairs, just a plain, old fashioned picnic table.
Porch swing is nice, but my hammock is even better.
Hot tub , back deck
Fire table is pretty sweet.
Maybe not exactly “furniture”, but “Grill/Smoker” is something my deck will NEVER be without.
Shellacked wire spool table(s)

I say either a hammock or some sort of swinging/hanging chair
Table & chairs.
I know, that’s 2 things, but neither is sufficient alone.
The big umbrella to keep the sun from toasting your head
A screen to keep the bugs out.
Turret mounted 50 cal.
Does a cooler count as furniture?
@lljk if it has beer it’s critical
Hammock
I also have to go with a hammock.
A pool…
