@atannir The folly of mistaking a paradox for a discovery, a metaphor for a proof, a torrent of verbiage for a spring of capital truths, and oneself for an oracle, is inborn in us. -- Paul Valéry, 1895
@heartny I am not sure if you are telling me that let me google that for you is best or to go piss off and look it up as opposed to post a thread... hmmm... I will interpret the former.
If you want to lose several hours/days of your life you should visit http://tvtropes.org/.
It's a little hard to navigate if you've never been but once you understand how it's all laid out it's incredibly addictive to just click from one thing to the next until you wake up from a fugue state 12 hours later.
I also find the writing to be excellent and all of the descriptions and examples of tropes spot on. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChekhovsGun and all of the other various Chekhov tropes are some of my favorites. Post your favorites so I have even more delightful distractions!
Enjoy doing nothing else productive for the rest of the day!
@JonT I refuse to use the word "trope". This website basically boils down movies/tv/anime into their bare parts. it condones behavior analogous to admiring a painting by yelling out the RGB average of each square inch.
@DrunkCat I think this is the wrong way of looking at it. Just because these tropes exist doesn't mean you can't enjoy the art they're present in. It's fun for me to see which tropes my favorite shows and movies fall into and most of the time I agree that they do fall into quite a few.
@JonT I absolutely agree it's the wrong way of looking at it but the majority don't seem to think so (hence my Irk). Reviews have gone from a contemplative examination of critique to basically a trope checklist. There are no longer poignant or impressive moments in any visual medium, just tropes used.

@JonT One of my favorites. Chekhov's gun!
Some guy makes cartoons from spam email subject lines. They are good. He stopped in 2007 but oh well.
