Wings have been my go to lately. A Vortex in a Weber makes perfect wings super easy.
But back in the day when we had summertime cookouts every weekend I made up a Bacon Cheeseburger Dog and it may have been one of the most fun things I have come up with to cook at a cookout.
Cut a strip of your preferred cheese off a block. Like a half to three quarter inch square section, (whatever half the thickness of a regular, I think 8 ounce, block of cheese is) as long as the block of cheese. It should be almost as long as a hot dog. You could get away with those individually wrapped snack cheese sticks or string cheese if you wanted.
Pack optionally seasoned hamburger meat around the cheese to make a meat log with a cheese core.
Wrap that whole thing in bacon.
Grill them up (careful when moving them, try to keep the cheesy middle intact) and serve on hot dog buns. Dress as desired.
@djslack friends and i made this eons ago, i almost forgot about it! we called it the hamdog. it was back when “meme” just meant cat macros so i forget how somebody discovered it, but as soon as we saw it we knew we had to try it. a hot dog wrapped in cheese wrapped in hamburger wrapped in bacon. a bunch of friends got together and made it at one of their houses on my birthday. (which was otherwise one of the most miserable birthdays i’ve ever had, but the hamdog was the bright spot.)
@moonhat i distinctly remember taking at least one pic, but this would have been on a flip phone some ten or more years ago. suffice it to say, even if the photo survived it likely wouldn’t be a fair or appetizing representation
here are some from the internet instead, while we wait to see if @djslack has any to share:
@jerk_nugget@moonhat same deal, this was pre-smartphone (I might have had a blackberry back then) so ubiquitous pics weren’t really a thing. Just take the hot dog out of the pics @jerk_nugget posted and make it solid cheese and you’re on the right track. The second picture showing them intact on the grill is just like how we did them.
Sigh. You’ve asked the wrong question. The real question is “What’s the best way to cook almost anything worth eating?” Sous-vide enthusiasts: not to leave you out. You can always sous-vide your steak (or pretty much anything) before a quick sear on the grill.
@OldCatLady I’ve been smoking mushrooms the past couple of weekends for recipe testing. They are outstanding all by themselves after some time in the old hardwood food-sauna. I have to make myself not snack on them and save them for the recipe.
@Alien we do these charred and then spread with mayo and a shredded hard cheese like manchego or asiago (cotija if you can get it). Dust with cayenne or chili powder to taste.
So many but my absolute favorite is hot dogs on the grill. Best way to get them thoroughly cooked and so delicious when overcooked with black grilled lines ( i.e. not greasy).
@JT954
semi-related here, does anyone think grilled Nathan’s hotdogs are greasy and gross? I’ve tried them and don’t like them. What’s the best dog on the grill?
@Fooknboomn For the flavor without the grease, I like Sabretts*. They’re hard to find in my area, though, so Hebrew Nationals are a decent replacement. I confess to liking a bit of grease in mine, though, so your mileage may vary.
didn’t understand the inclusion of sides, as it didn’t say “best [cookout or bbq] food” so i assumed “grill food” to mean food that is grilled. (although you can grill elements of those to make smoky versions i suppose, but i like the classics.) still…grilled corn and grilled pineapple are both amazing.
of the poll choices had to go with hot dog. nothing like a grilled, charred-in-places hot dog. hate to be That Person but i think flattop cooked burgers are better than grilled.
i miss being able to grill so much. last night i made chicken mojo tacos and it was good eatin’ for sure but man, being able to grill the chicken and fruit would have really taken it over the top.
They’re all great, but I’ll pretty much always go for a nice all-beef Kosher hot dog - especially if there’s brown mustard and sauerkraut to go with it.
Brats are perfect on the grill. I also like to slice potatoes, onions and peppers. Mix them with olive oil. Put them in a ton foil “pouch” and cook each side for about 10 minutes on medium-medium low (on my somewhat cheap grill). Eat with a little ketchup. It’s a really good mixture.
Steak.
@Pony Exactly. What is wrong with these people and their crappy polls?
@Fuzzalini @Pony I wondered that too. A big ole juicy thick steak cooked medium rare… yum
@Pony I don’t think it’s fair to vote for cooking your self… Oh wait you said steak. Still. Let’s have pony
@unksol I’d be lousy eating. All fat.
Bratwursts are nasty, don’t @ me.
@UncleVinny how can you say that
@moonhat you atted me! I said you shouldn’t do that! Has the whole world gone crazy?!?!?!
@UncleVinny
/giphy oops sorry not sorry
Pork chops!
Whatever ya hit, I reckon. Jes peel the durned varmint offa the grill and supper’s done. Come 'n git it!
@shahnm Different grill, I assume?
@phendrick On a related note…
The shrimp on the barbie.
Right, mate?
This is Texas. It is heretical not to grill Steaks!
WTF? Ribeye!
Ribs or brisket

@djslack Dayumn! On my bucket list now.

@djslack @jerk_nugget this sounds great. Is there any pics?
@moonhat i distinctly remember taking at least one pic, but this would have been on a flip phone some ten or more years ago. suffice it to say, even if the photo survived it likely wouldn’t be a fair or appetizing representation

But if I’m going to answer your silly question, all of the above are great, but you left out that paragon of awesomeness -Weißwurst.
@mehcuda67 That’s how we do our steaks and chops. So good.
Skewers that start and end with mushrooms.
@OldCatLady I’ve been smoking mushrooms the past couple of weekends for recipe testing. They are outstanding all by themselves after some time in the old hardwood food-sauna. I have to make myself not snack on them and save them for the recipe.
@djslack @OldCatLady Yeah, man, smoke some 'shrooms.
@djslack You need to do a quality test every time!
@OldCatLady oh, I did. The challenge was not to quality test most of the batches just to be sure the first results were consistent.
Cheerios.
Ears of sweet corn grilled in the husk and
served with a lotta butter and a little salt
@Alien we do these charred and then spread with mayo and a shredded hard cheese like manchego or asiago (cotija if you can get it). Dust with cayenne or chili powder to taste.
RIBEYE…mike drop! BTW, in Texas grilling is definitely not for ribs or brisket, that was made for a slow and low smoking.
@texmarc I still smoke items on the grill.

Runner up is baked potato.

*That’s plural, not possessive.
@Fooknboomn @JT954 Costco hotdogs are pretty good on the grill. Maybe not quite the best I’ve ever had, but fantastic for the price.

OK who are you poll makers? There are no choices for steak or shrimp in the poll? I call fix!!!

in general I am of the opinion that Grill = Good.
So… All the above.
