I did vote for Back to School for just pure comedy and so many memories of seeing it repeatedly over decades originally on tube TVs.
But I was thinking I saw something else recently and had to look it up. If you can, find “The Holdovers.” It’s actually the professor who is kind-of put in that situation and a cast of students as well. It’s an excellent movie but you can never match Rodney Dangerfield’s one-liners.
From Back to School (loosely quoted)
Woman: sorry, can’t meet you, I have class today
Rodney: well, call me sometime when you have no class
Also
Bring a pitcher of beer every 10 minutes until somebody passes out,
Then bring one every 5 minutes
Nothing in that movie is politically-correct today.
Does Big Fish (2003) count as a school movie? He was definitely out of water for most of the movie.
Does Napoleon Dynamite count as an out-of-water movie? He was definitely in school for most of the movie.
But if you’re looking for a fish out of school movie, then Ferris Bueller’s Day Off might be what you’re looking for.
(Fwiw, I haven’t seen any of the 3 movies we were supposed to choose from. And the older I get, the less interested I am in watching a movie about school.)
@lonocat actually does sound good and I enjoy things from that era; added it to a watchlist. Not sure it matches the “at school” criteria though. Still glad to know about it.
The New Guy.
Fast times at ridgemont high
@KSchweitz Dude!
EDIT not sure out-of-water. Reminded me of about half of the people I went to high school with in that era.

Definitely Donnie Darko (2001)
What about “Paleface” 1948
Bob Hope as a dentist who goes out west and conned into believing he’s a gunfighter

The Breakfast Club
The latestest: Deadpool & Wolverine (most of the X-Men movies count)
Oh, and Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
Possibly Karate Kid
The Court Jester, with Danny Kaye, Glynis Johns, Angela Lansbury and Basil Rathbone.
