I have a fall birthday, and for the last 10 yrs, my sisters have made a pumpkin ice cream cake from scratch. They buy a ton of pie pumpkins each fall to make all sorts of pumpkin treats, but that is the best.
Pumpkin spice latte, just like grandma used to make.
– Wait! Just, Hell, No!
My grandmother was from the Old Country. And she could cook the heck out of the ethnic food. But she also adapted to the new place.
During the fall, she could use the fresh fruits of the land and make the best apple, pear, and/or pumpkin pies. (Usually some of each through the week.) Nothing fancy, just delicious (if you could patiently last through the aroma, while they were baking.) And then taught my mom, who then also could make the best pies. Lord how I miss them! (And the dear ladies, too.)
@ircon96 I’m afraid pieces of my thumb would end up in the apple pie. And it would be scorched by the time I took it out of the oven. I wouldn’t even know which apples are for eating raw and which ones are for pies.
After I was nine or ten, I don’t believe I witnessed the preparation, on account of school, later work; I would just smell (then eat) them when I got home.
OTOH, later as a bachelor, I would get complements on a quiche I used to make (recipe from a cookbook). I’ve been thinking about trying that again, but I no longer have that cookbook.
@phendrick To paraphrase Patches O’Houlihan, if you can make a quiche, you can make a pie! Just don’t serve thumb pie to vegetarians…?
Anyway, I believe in you, you cahn doo eet!
@phendrick Try asking over on reddit’s old_recipes sub to see if anyone has the cookbook or the recipe you’re looking for. They are a fabulous source when you’re looking for a particular recipe or cookbook. I’ll be the cookbook has probably been uploaded somewhere already!
@phendrick We have a family tradition that my son makes double-crust apple pie (from scratch, using Braeburn apples from our tree) for Thanksgiving dinner dessert. Last year he couldn’t make it home because of his work schedule, so I made the traditional apple pie - my first attempt at from-scratch pie crust. It was passable, but not as good as his. His schedule is looking even crazier this year, so it is not clear who will be the pie-maker for this Thanksgiving.
@ircon96@phendrick Quiche is easy peezy, and hardly anyone even uses cookbooks anymore, even those of us who have dozens of them. It seems like every recipe is available somewhere online!
@ircon96@phendrick I bet you’re right. There are even many many cooking videos of people happy to talk you through it; some more efficiently than others.
@Kyeh@phendrick So true, there’s a whole new world of culinary resources out there (of varying quality, to be sure) for the gastronomically challenged!
I used to look forward to Trader Joe’s Organic Hot Cocoa Frosted Toaster Pastries in the fall, but I think they have been discontinued. Fall is no longer worth living
@ahacksaw@Star2236
I remember when all of the Dunkun Donuts locations made their own stuff on site. They were much better then. Now, not even up to the level of meh for a lot of the flavors, and some of the best stuff that they used to have hasn’t been seen in decades.
@ahacksaw@werehatrack
Right. When we were kids we used to walk up to dunkin at midnight and get the donuts that they were gonna throw away for free bc they were still good but now it’s just frozen crap.
When we go to the farm stand we get apple cider and a candy apple. I’m not sure how it is a farm stand, there is no farm attached to it. Maybe an apple grove. They sell mostly pumpkins and apples.
@Kyeh LOL I know!! I stumbled on this Foghat gadget; fill the chamber with wood shavings, top with strainer, put on your drink and fire away!! I usually leave the cover on for a bit to infuse it better. It’s SOOOOOO good
@Kyeh@llangley
Thanks for sending me down the ‘smoke gun’ rabbit trail. I had seen something about this before, but it kind of fell off my radar. Now I know what I’m getting my son for Christmas.
Maple Sugar candy
Football!
@Evansdoor
Ugh the NFL
They play throughout the year now
Can’t use property
A soft landing.
Jalapeño poppers
Cheesy hashbrown casserole. It has ham or bacon and apple inside and is topped with crunchy herbed cornflakes. So stinking delicious!
@sillyheathen Sounds great. I use crushed corn flakes for beer-battered fish and chicken fingers
Simple fried cake donut - no glaze, no cinnamon, no powdered sugar, and PLEASE no pumpkin spice!
/image schutt’s fried cake
@ybmuG those have cinnamon sugar. Best kind.
@ybmuG plain cake donuts are my husband’s favorites. They’re hard to find tho. None of the places around here tend to have more than a couple

Pumpkin bread.
@remo28 the only pumpkin thing actually worth eating.
@katbyter idk I’ve also made a really good pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting. Pumpkin bread just seems slightly healthier. Less sugar.
@katbyter @remo28
Make pumpkin muffins
Only bake half the batter
That’s what spoons are for
Pumpkin spice = blech! Please no…
Apple donuts. Slices, not cider.
https://tasty.co/recipe/easy-apple-doughnuts
@katbyter oh my god. Looks amazing.
@RiotDemon it is every bit as good as it looks.
@katbyter I’ve been on a journey the last few months to eat better… But this I must try.
@katbyter @RiotDemon
At least it’s healthier than a traditional all-dough donut!
Venison.
Hot cocoa with extra cream and a dash of Ceylon cinnamon. I think I need to make a cup…
@werehatrack
Gourmet hot chocolate
I use slow-pasteurized milk
Pittsford Farms Cream Top
Where are the candy corn jokes? Does anyone remember the Meh candy cornpocalypse? I still have the belly fat to prove it.
@hchavers Candy corn in general would come under the “Worst Fall Treat” poll. The Meh version just took it to the next level (down).
@ircon96 That’s not really a joke. I was really hoping for some of the memories. Too much to ask?
@hchavers Apparently it is too much, even if only for your waistline…?

@phendrick Pear pie - mmmmmm!
@phendrick If only you had done as much learning as eating, you could have become the pie provider!

Practice makes perfect
Try it slow with careful hands
Become propieder
I agree wholeheartedly with pumpkin bread.
@ircon96 And muffins. And donuts! I’m making myself hungry now.
I used to look forward to Trader Joe’s Organic Hot Cocoa Frosted Toaster Pastries in the fall, but I think they have been discontinued. Fall is no longer worth living
Pumpkin seeds. Homemade chicken and dumplings.
Pork green chile.
Pumpkin pie with plenty of whip cream.
Cooler weather
@edguyver14
Me, going out to my car this summer:
Leaves turning on the trees and the riot of color. Too bad they mostly turn straight to brown in the deep south - I miss living up north seeing them.
/image trader-joes-pumpkin-ice-cream
Wild Turkey 101.
@PocketBrain That, any time of year.
@PocketBrain we’ve got a dozen or so that have taken up residence in our area. They come by regularly.
Apple fritters. I haven’t had one in decades, but they’re still the best.
@ahacksaw
Only if their made from a real bakery not the crap they make at Dunkin’ Donuts.
@ahacksaw @Star2236

@ahacksaw @Star2236 @werehatrack
No apple fritters
Wakka wakka doo doo yeah
In Albuquerque
@ahacksaw @replicacobra @werehatrack what’s that?
Hot pecan pie with a little bourbon in it. Great a la mode with some Blue Bell vanilla ice cream.
https://www.pauladeen.com/recipe/bourbon-pecan-pie-aka-douglas-dark-rum-pecan-pie/
Spaten Octoberfest
Beginning of Fall: Anonnas and dragonfruit. End of fall: Tomatoes and casabanana. Nothing compares to summer, though.
Caramel apples
@dyounghbic I need to get a couple from Morke’s for Halloween; that is our own treat for ourselves.
Pumpkin pie blizzard.
Surprised there wasn’t more love for candy corn!
What, no Pecan Pie? Cause I’m totally going for Pecan Pie!
Freshly roasted pumpkin seeds, with just the right amount of salt. I eat them shell and all!
When we go to the farm stand we get apple cider and a candy apple. I’m not sure how it is a farm stand, there is no farm attached to it. Maybe an apple grove. They sell mostly pumpkins and apples.
Thai pumpkin, chicken and coconut soup
@macromeh I’m thinking butternut squash would be delicious also.
@macromeh Did you make that?
It looks delicious.
@Kyeh I have made the soup, but the posted photo was borrowed from the inter-webs. And yes, it is delicious!
Smoked old fashioned!
But I don’t really wait for fall
@llangley
What?! How do you do that?
@Kyeh LOL I know!! I stumbled on this Foghat gadget; fill the chamber with wood shavings, top with strainer, put on your drink and fire away!! I usually leave the cover on for a bit to infuse it better. It’s SOOOOOO good
@llangley That’s really cool! I bet your friends are impressed!
(Funny - I think I have that little wire strainer thing in one of my shower drains.)
@Kyeh @llangley
Thanks for sending me down the ‘smoke gun’ rabbit trail. I had seen something about this before, but it kind of fell off my radar. Now I know what I’m getting my son for Christmas.
Dark beer.
Candy corn or die!
@PooltoyWolf Not exactly mutually exclusive.
Venison and Canadian Goose
Weird. Apparently I hate all fall treats. I had no idea.
Usually I find myself drooling in these food threads, but there hasn’t been a single item mentioned that I would choose of my own volition.
@DrWorm
Doctor Worm must like
Apple crisp and espresso
Homemade apple pie
I finally found some REALLY good fresh local corn, it’s getting to be more & more of a crapshoot!
Chilli
CRANBERRIES!!!
Bread
Muffins
Oatmeal Cranberry cookies
Cranberry Sauce with a touch of orange peel.
@growyoungagain
I start to suspect
Though I want more evidence
You like cranberries
@replicacobra
I was introduced to this at an early age by my grandma.
@growyoungagain
Cranberry liqueur
It must have so much sugar
To cover the tart
@replicacobra Yes it was too sweet, as most liqueurs are. I like my cranberries with minimal sugar.
