Grilled chicken is probably the best way to do chicken. Pretty much any kind of sausage is great on the grill. I haven’t tried breakfast sausage… yet. Burgers are good too. But I think the hot dog wins “Most Improved” by grilling vs oven (or God forbid the microwave).
@simplersimon Here’s one: take a whole portabella mushroom. Remove the stem. Marinate the cap in a mixture of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce and your favorite hot sauce for a couple hours. Mix some shredded cheddar cheese with some minced garlic and some diced red bell pepper. Maybe some finely chopped broccoli, too, if you want to be all healthy and shit. Place the mushroom cap open side up on the grill over medium-low heat and fill with the cheese mixture. When the cheese starts bubbling, it’s done. Serve on a plate or a bun.
I used to not really like hamburgers, then I started buying them from the butcher instead of the supermarket. Now definitely hamburgers. Even trying to eat healthy, even in the winter, I need at least one grilled butcher hamburger a week.
@Seeds Have you tried making your own pub burgers? You need a food processor. Buy steak, beef short ribs, whatever cuts you want. Cut into cubes about 1", partly freeze (so they’re firm, not hard) then food process to a coarse grind.
Spread out on a sheet pan, drizzle melted butter over and around, and re-partly freeze to fairly firm.
Sprinkle salt/pepper over the beef. Form into patties but don’t pack too tight; must stay cold enough that the butter doesn’t melt. Make sure to press a dimple into the center of the patty.
Then grill or flat iron/cast iron cook them from their cold state. Bet you like them.
Hot dogs. All-beef and kosher, for preference. My favorite brand is Sabrett, but they’re not available where I live. Fortunately Wal-Mart carries Nathan’s and Hebrew National, and those are great second choices.
How can it possibly be any more #Merica than this?!?
Smoked burger w/ bacon & Co-Jack cheese, toasted onion bun…Can I get a “HELL YEAH!”??? (PS: This was my supper last night!!)
It seems like a barbecues/grills/cookouts and gas stations are the rare places where it’s socially acceptable or expected for an adult to eat a hot dog.
You can get a hamburger year-round in most restaurants, but hot dogs are almost always relegated to the kids menu.
For that reason, I would would say that hot dogs are the definitive grill food. Good luck getting it elsewhere.
Today, Steak 'n Shake restaurants are located in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.
@RiotDemon Ooh! True! I completely forgot about hotdog stands! I don’t live in a big city, but whenever I go to DC, Philly, or New York I always make sure I get at least one hot dog from a hotdog stand.
@compunaut I just checked, there’s a Steak n Shake about 36 miles away from me, and it’s kind of on my way to/from work. I might need to check it out sometime.
Steak.
Can I assume Brats are not annoying children? I never thought of them as grill food
@heartny - Bratwurst, mien wurst freund:
Uh… Steak? Brisket? Corn?
Not sure what constitutes “classic,” but I went with none of the above.
How are brats and grilled veggies on the list, but no steak? No ribs? SMH

Steak. Yum.
Freakin’ 1½ inch thick medium rare prime Ribeye seared over some mesquite or pecan. Everything else is good or even great, but still secondary.
Now if you’re smokin’ then ribs or brisket, but on the grill, it starts and ends with steak.

@2many2no
/giphy he’s right you know
@2many2no Only one variation. You start with sous vide, and end with searing on the grill.
Alright, whoever put veggies as best better have darn good explanation. And a darn better recipe.

@Seeds How many butchers does it take to get through winter?
@therealjrn Depends on the size and fat content of the individual I guess.

@dannybeans Nathan’s skinless are the only kind I buy.

@tohar1 How? You could toss an ear of corn on the side.
@cinoclav I would allow that.
Burgers and dogs should be on the same line. Always at the grill yelling… who wants burger? Who wants dog?
Classic grilled item? Grilled cheese sandwich

Brisket. The only down side is the skills and time required to do it well.

@Coldrice
Steak 'n Shake treats hot dog (‘Steak Frank’) like adult food
@compunaut Nice! I’ve never been there, I don’t think there’s any around me…
@Coldrice Per Wikipedia,
@Coldrice @compunaut Checkers too, but good luck breathing in the car after someone eats one of those chilidogs
@Coldrice there’s a hotdog stand outside of where I work. Add hotdog stands to the list.

@Coldrice Whoa; that’s a pretty long commute innit?
/giphy long commute
@compunaut Haha, I wish I only worked 36 miles away! I drive 50 miles each way, it only takes about an hour depending on traffic.
Hot Dogs from the grill are the best way to eat them. Even if they are overcooked, they are sooooooo good.
@JT954 Every dog needs a good char, eh?
/image dog char
@JT954 noooo. There was someone at my job that would constantly burn all the hotdogs. It was terrible.
