@OnionSoup@yakkoTDI Can confirm, I’ve been seeing it since the '60s. IIRC, it’s better than 7-up (that’s a low bar), Fresca, Mountain Dew, or Sprite, but I haven’t had it in at least two decades. It could be vile now, and I wouldn’t know.
@OnionSoup@werehatrack@yakkoTDI It’s been a while since I’ve had Squirt as well, but I think the main decider of whether it’s “good” or “gross” is whether you like grapefruit. Apparently some people don’t; they are wrong.
@OnionSoup@werehatrack@xobzoo@yakkoTDI
Liking grapefruit is a common topic around my place these days…
Someone thinks I have a choice wether or not I like them. Like how is that even possible, it’s not like I’m 2 years old and don’t want to eat my vegetables!
I just can’t do that kind of bitter, just like limes.
Love lemons though!
Edit - my lime emoji turned into a lemon with a green square. Hmm
I actually liked Fresca, in small doses. I don’t think I’ve had more than a sip of any kind soda in 20 years though.
Do any other foods or drinks cause them?
@Lynnerizer@Star2236@werehatrack@xobzoo@yakkoTDI it’s the artificial sweeteners in Fresca that give me migraines. Any diet soda, if I have too much, will eventually give me a migraine, but Fresca must use more than others. Just One can of Fresca is enough to set me off…
Smells actually give me migraines me often than foods. Cinnamon is the absolute worst, the slightest whiff in winter will set me off (which sucks because I like the smell otherwise). The broken poo pouri that I got in an IRK once, triggered a migraine that lasted several days. All the Lysol scents, many soap scent, etc… but it worse when the air is dry. Middle of summer, I almost never get migraines from scents.
@kittykat9180 yes. Never seen it before. But I’ve spent most of my time in the US on the east coast. When I’ve travelled out west before I haven’t been going into grocery stores so I’ve never seen it before now
@Lynnerizer@OnionSoup@werehatrack@xobzoo@yakkoTDI
I think it’s the shift on the pressure in the atmosphere. Winter is a lot worse for me too. When it’s very hot and humid for long periods of time, I get it too.
@kittykat9180@Kyeh for sure. To get to Wisconsin you have to pass through uncivilized lands filled with bandits and train robbers… Such is Indiana and Ohio.
@kittykat9180@Kyeh well it’s also in the mid-west and slightly west of the “population middle” of the US. (More people living to the east than to the west of it)
@OnionSoup Nothing that popped up in a search lends any credence to the possibility, but I have to wonder if you’ve got an idiosyncratic reaction to the sweeteners (aspartame and ACE-K) that might be getting enhanced by the presence of grapefruit juice concentrate in the ingredients of Fresca. It shouldn’t be possible, but biology is a complex thing.
@werehatrack I don’t know… I do know that aspartame is very a common migraine trigger in a lot of people… Fresca isn’t the only soda that has it though.
@Lynnerizer Lime is also good (and better than lemon), so at least you’ve got that.
Part of me wants to say “if your grapefruit is bitter, you’re eating it wrong” but that’s probably a bit harsh. I also might have a higher tolerance for bitter than others. (For example, I like straight cacao.)
In addition to all that, I think the Ruby Red grapefruit is the most grapefruity (in a good way), but the plain yellow kind is a lot more common (and more bitter).
I guess that’s just the long way of saying “it’s neat/fun/interesting that everyone can have such different preferences and still get along.” Or something like that. It makes me wonder how much our sensations differ from person to person. (When I see a color, is that the same “color” that other people see? We know the taste of cilantro [and other things] is influenced by genetics…)
@xobzoo
I did not know that the taste of cilantro is influenced by our genetics! I’ve got to sit on that for a minute or two.
It’s the Ruby Red grapefruit that is what I’ve been threatened with having put in my cup, or snuck into something I’m eating.
How can someone be eating grapefruit incorrectly, I didn’t know that was possible?
When I was a kid my dad and sister used to put sugar on them, it was a whole project the way they’d take a knife and section each piece while still in it’s own natural bowl. I wanted to like it so much just so I could prepare it like they did. (Yes, I was the youngest) I couldn’t eat bananas either but that was a texture thing. (I’ll spare you my story about that! Ha! ) I was really fascinated by eating fruit out of it’s own natural wrapper and I TRIED SO HARD to like it.
@Lynnerizer@xobzoo I love grapefruit, and to me grapefruit is bitter… But I like bitter. Gin, black coffee, unsweetened or semi sweetened chocolate… They all taste good to me.
@Lynnerizer@OnionSoup@xobzoo Agree. (And don’t forget the glorious taste of a nice cold hoppy IPA.)
I also like grapefruit but sadly as I am on a statin, it is verboten for me.
@Lynnerizer@xobzoo I like dates, and I like the way figs taste, just not those gritty seeds. I don’t like seeds in a lot of things - I love the flavor of Asian sweet chili sauce but it’s got those damn seeds.
How can someone be eating grapefruit incorrectly, I didn’t know that was possible?
Well, I said that mostly as a joke, but it turns out I do happen to have an opinion on it.
I think the “standard” way is to cut it in half along its equator, then scoop out its brains tasty parts with a small spoon. Very common, very valid, but scraping the walls makes it more bitter than it needs to be.
I think this is basically what you’re familiar with. Left picture: stolen from some spam consolidator ad website in Arabic or something. Right picture: stolen from “eatthis.com” which looked like it might otherwise be a legitimate website, but this picture horrifies me too much to ever go back there.
What I consider a better (though more labor-intensive) option is to peel it. Like an orange, but more. Peeled orange segments are still wearing underwear. Grapefruit segments should be completely naked. A bit like this: Image credit:kitchenconfidante.com, which also provides a 2-minute video:
The only thing I would say she’s doing “wrong” is over-peeling the outside too early. I find it easier to peel the sides (segment separators, or “underwear”) off if some of the the pith is still attached around the outside. But another video (from someone else) also over-peeled it, and seemed to do just fine, so maybe I’m the one that’s weird?
(to be clear, I already know I’m weird — for peeling grapefruit and for other reasons — but … what was I talking about?)
I also use a sharp, short-bladed knife to help split the segments open.
Anyway, it’s more work, considerably slower, and potentially a bit messier, but completely worth it. In my opinion. But I happen to like grapefruit to start with. For someone who doesn’t like grapefruit at all, I doubt it will change their minds. For someone who loves the flavor but hates the bitter, it might just what they were looking for.
Fwiw, I thought actual AI image generation would come out a lot more hilarious. But this is what mediocrebot gave me, in two tries:
Not hilarious, and almost not even wrong. Color me disappointed.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@xobzoo I like grapefruit well enough… when each spoonful is covered with an equal amount of sugar. Unfortunately, my doctor says I shouldn’t eat more than one per year.
@pakopako@Pony Dehydrated water is safe to store in any amount. Freeze-dried Dr Prepper tends to explode violently if not handled properly, or accumulated in amounts near its critical mass level.
@chienfou Somehow that reminds me of a cola my friend brought back from a little village in Mexico. It was basically warm Pepsi in a jar… infused with ghostpeppers.
Along with other varieties of moonshine, it was a night that left an impression on all of us.
Moxie!!
@yakkoTDI Cowardice
spite
Was up in Wisconsin last weekend and they have a soda called “squirt”… Made me laugh.
@OnionSoup Squirt is all over the place last I saw.
@OnionSoup @yakkoTDI Can confirm, I’ve been seeing it since the '60s. IIRC, it’s better than 7-up (that’s a low bar), Fresca, Mountain Dew, or Sprite, but I haven’t had it in at least two decades. It could be vile now, and I wouldn’t know.

@yakkoTDI it’s not in the Carolina’s or Georgia… I would definitely have remembered seeing an inappropriately named soda otherwise.
@OnionSoup @werehatrack @xobzoo @yakkoTDI
Like how is that even possible, it’s not like I’m 2 years old and don’t want to eat my vegetables!

@Lynnerizer @OnionSoup @werehatrack @xobzoo @yakkoTDI
I love squirt, even better is the ruby red squirt.
@Lynnerizer @Star2236 @werehatrack @xobzoo @yakkoTDI I will have to try it next weekend when I’m back in Chicago;Wisconsin area.
I love grapefruit. Used to like Fresca (something I haven’t seen on shelves lately) but could never drink much Fresca because it gave me migraines.
@OnionSoup @Star2236 @werehatrack @xobzoo @yakkoTDI
I actually liked Fresca, in small doses. I don’t think I’ve had more than a sip of any kind soda in 20 years though.

Squirt has been around at least since I was a kid.
@kittykat9180 yes. Never seen it before. But I’ve spent most of my time in the US on the east coast. When I’ve travelled out west before I haven’t been going into grocery stores so I’ve never seen it before now
@kittykat9180 @OnionSoup Wisconsin is “out west?”
@Lynnerizer @OnionSoup @werehatrack @xobzoo @yakkoTDI
I think it’s the shift on the pressure in the atmosphere. Winter is a lot worse for me too. When it’s very hot and humid for long periods of time, I get it too.
@kittykat9180 @Kyeh for sure. To get to Wisconsin you have to pass through uncivilized lands filled with bandits and train robbers… Such is Indiana and Ohio.
@Kyeh @OnionSoup I suppose technically it is west of the Atlantic Coast. However, if you go east enough it could also be really far east.
@kittykat9180 @Kyeh well it’s also in the mid-west and slightly west of the “population middle” of the US.
@kittykat9180 @OnionSoup The “midwest” is such a misnomer.
@kittykat9180 @Kyeh yes… Midwest is a bit of a misnomer but it’s definitely west of me. Lol
@werehatrack I don’t know… I do know that aspartame is very a common migraine trigger in a lot of people… Fresca isn’t the only soda that has it though.
@OnionSoup @Star2236 @werehatrack @xobzoo @yakkoTDI

I’m just thankful I haven’t had a migraine in years, they’re the worst! Botox injections are a good thing!
@Lynnerizer

@Lynnerizer @xobzoo My friend loves cilantro and I hate it. I love shiso (perilla) and she hates it! We both think the one we hate tastes like soap.
@xobzoo

I did not know that the taste of cilantro is influenced by our genetics! I’ve got to sit on that for a minute or two.

It’s all about the little things!
@Lynnerizer @xobzoo I don’t like figs because of all those sandy little seeds.
@Kyeh @xobzoo
I love figs! They taste like dates to me. Go ahead and tell me that they are the same thing. Lol
Ah ha, you get it!
@Lynnerizer @xobzoo I love grapefruit, and to me grapefruit is bitter… But I like bitter. Gin, black coffee, unsweetened or semi sweetened chocolate… They all taste good to me.

@OnionSoup oh man, I acknowledge the name, but I love Squirt. I get one every week in the summer for when I work in the garden.
@Lynnerizer @OnionSoup @werehatrack @xobzoo @yakkoTDI
Yeah I get them too, they help a lot. I still get migraines but mine aren’t as bad as they used to be.
@Lynnerizer @xobzoo I like dates, and I like the way figs taste, just not those gritty seeds. I don’t like seeds in a lot of things - I love the flavor of Asian sweet chili sauce but it’s got those damn seeds.
