I feel like if you want a one-shouldered receptacle, just go for a satchel, purse, messenger bag, or duffel bag. Don't misuse a backpack like some heathen.
I have a backpack with wheels. I inherited it from one of my children when they upgraded to a newer backpack.
I use it mostly as rolling luggage.
Sometimes I end up lugging everybody's luggage from the hotel room to the car. Having only one back, and limited coordination, I can only wear one backpack at a time. So I wear at most one and carry and/or roll the rest.
Sometimes it depends how loaded the pack is and/or what you're doing. A fully loaded pack or riding a motorcycle, both shoulders are a must. Toting just a laptop from the car to the house or office, a single shoulder gets it done.
I remember when I was in the second grade, I suddenly noticed the cool kids were wearing their backpacks on one shoulder. Oh shit! I quickly lost one strap – did anyone notice all this time? Would I forever be branded Nerd?
Yes, I would. A resounding yes you're a nerd because and only because you wear both straps on your backpack. It's going to take you longer to put it on and take it off. You can't stand cool and off balance like you don't give a shit. And any of the bigger kids can grab you and swing you around by your nerd handle.
So like any cool thing I switched and waited for someone to tell me I was cool, at last. Never happened. I'm a nerd and forever shall be. So yeah, I wear both straps with pride. Nerd pride.
It all depends on how far you're going and how fast. Across the room? Just grab a handle. Same building or at a casual pace? One-shoulder it. In a rush and going between buildings? Get it on tight and get moving.
I actually put stuff in my backpack on the rare occasion I use it, so one strap just isn't going to hold it. It's a utilitarian object, not some Quasimodo fashion statement.
I carry my work crap in one of those drawstring backpacks (that I got free from a deal a day woot competitor years ago) and I was just considering this very question this morning as I was walking in to work. I had it slung over one shoulder which tends to require using my elbow to hold it in place. More often than not I'll use both strings like a regular backpack but once in a while I go all teenage cool.
@MrMark I dont measure dedication, maturity, competence, or cool in myself or others by 1 shoulder vs 2, or backpack vs briefcase vs none, or stuff like that.
People just vary. I know someone who works at a Dominos cook and carries a briefcase - it just works for him, he's not creating some image or playing at being serious, He is a great person and employee. I know a sucessful lawyer and great guy (international real estate, thriving practice) who uses a backpack. I know an amazing coder who gets "work-for-me" calls all the time, who uses a kid's backpack.
@f00l I'm not saying it's right, but it's one initial impressions that turn me off. Sure they can prove themselves to be a great employee, but it's a bit of an uphill battle. I'm not even sure why it bothers me so much, it just does. I can't think of any other biases I have other than that.
@MrMark I figure w the people i dont know, if i need to make a judgment, i try to go on behavior, judgement, attitude re stuff that matters. If i do know the person, i have that info.
If i lack that info, i do all i can to get it, cause i need it.
@PhotoJim If he's got his tightie-whities in the cloud, well yeah, trust and reliability really matter.
Imagine you're wearing your special superman briefs, and of course they're in the cloud, as @Miko1 states, and then there's a temporary timeout or disconnection!
But then he 's stated that he doesn't carry briefs anymore, he keeps them in the cloud.
So he carries them instead of wearing them? I guess he used to go commando, with emergency briefs in his hand or pocket or backpack. But now: going commando, but with emergency briefs in the cloud? Damn, will dropbox do that? Or rsync? Does one use the same protocols for briefs and boxers?
Also, if he used to carry briefs, was that "concealed carry" or "open carry"?
And if the briefs are now in the cloud, does that legally count as "carry" according to the state legislature?
@Lotsofgoats crazy man! I have started collecting TIMBUK2 Especial bags but my last bag I got was during their big sale - Red Hook Crit Travel Backpack!
BlackFriday I got a Boombotix for 10cents! Best combo for cycling ever!
Come on, meh.com. Where's the love for all of the octopi and three shouldered people in this world?
@DVDBZN yeah! Sell these, meh.
That is something my husband would say...aka...the hot model in the backpack photo. :D
I feel like if you want a one-shouldered receptacle, just go for a satchel, purse, messenger bag, or duffel bag. Don't misuse a backpack like some heathen.
@brumagem I had a hunch you'd say that
@brumagem
I resent the slander against my kin. My mother is a heathen. How dare you.
Furthermore, the other shoulder is likely supporting the other backpack. Sometimes, anyway; must stay in readiness.
Just carry stuff on your head, people

@djslack See? Why didn't they include "other" as an option today?
I remember when I was in the second grade, I suddenly noticed the cool kids were wearing their backpacks on one shoulder. Oh shit! I quickly lost one strap – did anyone notice all this time? Would I forever be branded Nerd?

@tallrob Jokes on them, nerd became cool and now everyone cool carries a small computer in their pocket, that happens to also make phone calls.
@caffeine_dude
Only a single pocket computer?
Huh. Wait, lemme count.
Nope, not telling.
It all depends on how far you're going and how fast. Across the room? Just grab a handle. Same building or at a casual pace? One-shoulder it. In a rush and going between buildings? Get it on tight and get moving.

So where's the option for Both in the survey?
@cinoclav Survey is flawed, not voting out of protest.
two and sorry you're not cool
I chose 0 mostly because I no longer use a backpack. I also don't take the people that wear a backpack to work as seriously as those that do not.
@MrMark

Who should i take seriously? I say all of them.
@MrMark fite me m8

If i dont need it, why draw conclusions?
@MrMark For many of us there are things that bother us more than they should.
@sligett Ha. Now I hope Irk shares the same view as me so one day I can better understand why I feel this way.
@MrMark perhaps you should instead judge their employer for issuing a backpack along with the company laptop.
... but I can't fit all this crap in a brief case. I don't even carry any briefs around. All those are in the cloud.
@miko1 You have a much greater trust in your connectivity than I do.
@miko1
Your briefs are in the cloud? Your tightie-whities? Your boxers?
Wow.
@PhotoJim
If he's got his tightie-whities in the cloud, well yeah, trust and reliability really matter.

PS current backpack is a TIMBUK2 Especial Raider that I hang off of my bike seat... so does that count as 0 while I'm riding?
@Lotsofgoats
Counts as cool.
@Lotsofgoats crazy man! I have started collecting TIMBUK2 Especial bags but my last bag I got was during their big sale - Red Hook Crit Travel Backpack!
BlackFriday I got a Boombotix for 10cents! Best combo for cycling ever!
We went with a backpack diaper bag. That thing is heavy as shit and requires both shoulders.
