@Euniceandrich hey, thank you! When I saw this was for sale again today I wanted to link my post from last time. The tl;dr: It’s a terrific camera for $15 as long as you have any other mic.
Might have to get this. All of us are working from home and I have survived three years of not being on camera. But we have a new ceo and he is requesting everyone have their cameras on during meetings. He’s also requesting a business casual dress code which I do not think is going to fly. Besides, all my old work clothes went to donation a year ago.
@ironcheftoni I try to keep a company polo hanging in my office to throw on if I have an unexpected meeting with a customer or executive, but I haven’t worn long pants in six months or so. If I have a planned customer interaction, I dress to look the part. But I’m not sure how I would react it I was told business casual was expected all the time.
@ironcheftoni sounds like your new CEO will soon create a “hybrid” work schedule! have fun coming back into the office 2, and then 3, and eventually 5 days a week.
@ironcheftoni I work from home in IT. Pajamas on the bottom, concert/conference/branded black t-shirt on top. Occasionally I’ll break out something button-up for a more “formal” occasion, lol
Naw, man, naw. I specifically ordered a handful of Logitech C505 webcams last year because they behave well with all modern conference applications… but at a claimed-720p-phhhft-prob-360i resolution, with a 60deg FOV. No peeking at the titles on my shelves, and NOTHING BUT MY BIG FAT MODOK-LOOKING HEAD in the field of view.
Cow-orkers: “DUdE you nEEd a better wEbcAM!!”
Me: “… (silence)…(squinty look)… Why?”
@blaadnort thanks for the tip, I hadn’t thought of that. I actually have an old tradeshow banner I hang behind me to avoid cleaning my office
Found it on Amazon refurb for $18
@oldmantick I like 'em. At ~60deg, the C505 has the narrowest field of view of any webcam I’ve found. Works perfectly in Linux and Windows. And the microphone is actually very very good.
I bought a 4k camera and got it home and then thought “…why?” Nobody needs to see me in pixel-perfect detail. I’m amazed my wife doesn’t take her glasses off before agreeing to kiss me.
I’ve found a lot of these cheap webcams have poor Linux UVC video driver integration and often serial numbers like 12345678 or 0000000 ; As a result, trying to use more than one at a time for live streaming on Twitch (via OBS) causes the cameras to not come up, or come up in different orders each time, various USB bandwidth/bus issues, etc. Some have poor cables that, when flexed even gently, cause bus resets. But 1080p/30 is kind of poor.
@caffeineguy so I broke out an old laptop running Elementary. The native Camera app goes to the onboard camera but web based tests can access it. It does show 640x480 on the one I used that showed details. Here is a dmesg log:
@djslack Thanks! Another good quick and dirty test for most linux distros is the ‘cheese’ application, and it’ll let you set most of the parameters that are exposed via the UVC driver. But looks like it’s supported a little better than I expected; All the other previous cameras from meh come up as just “USB camera” or “USB webcam” in OBS/Discord, etc. Ahh WTH I’ll try one.
I’ve been slowly outfitting all the various workstations I use in the offices my boss wants me to hybrid-work from in this the hellscape that is corporate work in 2023. I’ve got one workstation left where I only have the ultraflattering low angle camera on my laptop. Anyway, in for one (for now).
A couple of questions for those who already have this camera. Does it take a micro-SD card to record meetings, as I seen one site that kinda points to that, but not mentioned anywhere on Amazon or downloadable user manuals. None show the back of the camera if a card slot. Is it pretty much plug & play from a home PC with included software? Lastly, anyone get it to work with an Android phone? Thanks!
@danexton From the photos, certainly looks to me like there is no card slot, and no controls of any kind besides a shutter in front of the camera. (But I have not experienced it in person.)
@danexton Avaya has/had a whole line of conference cameras and this is the basic web camera one. I wouldn’t even call it a huddle camera, though it does have a slightly wider angle than many webcams. No card slot or recording in hardware. It is plug and play for Windows and had no problem instantly working with Teams on my laptop.
I bought one of these last time. It’s a very good camera, and a great deal at this price. You must need software to do panning and zooming, though. The hardware doesn’t have any controls other than the manual shutter.
I have to admit that I’m very disappointed in today’s deal after reading in the email “This is the only picture we’re showing you of today’s deal.”, and upon clicking, discovering that they’re selling a Webcam and not a tiny suit for my cat. He will be quite disappointed, as he’s a tuxedo cat but occasionally likes to be able to dress down a bit.
@norrisjc My tuxedo dogs would commiserate, except one insists on formality, and the other had removed her collar and was running around naked when I got home.
I got one of these last time and can’t get webex or zoom (or anything really) to use it in 1080p mode. I even downloaded the software. Any ideas/suggestions?
@mikerohfeld I see that you’ve cancelled it now. Memeberships are billed at the start or the month, and cancelled memberships with no shipping in the current period typically get the most recent month refunded. Not even 1% as shady as Conde Nast Publishing’s magazine subscriptions.

@ironcheftoni But you only need business-like tops, right?

@djslack @ironcheftoni or pants….
What’s below the desk is your business.
Just make sure to hit the video mute before you get up for coffee.
@ironcheftoni sounds like your new CEO will soon create a “hybrid” work schedule! have fun coming back into the office 2, and then 3, and eventually 5 days a week.
@outz actually, they are selling our building so that’s not happening

I learned something today. I thought cool cats wear hats. Little did I know they can wear suits too.
@hchavers The prior gif is of u/deepfuckingvalue (aka Roaring Kitty) who was forced to testify over his investments in $GME.
Also:
@narfcake have you seen Dumb Money yet?
Wow I didn’t know they still made these cameras. I could use this in my 2002 IBM Laptop!!

Just got the order at work that all zoom meetings will have cameras and they’re on. There goes naked Fridays. Or…
I bought a 4k camera and got it home and then thought “…why?” Nobody needs to see me in pixel-perfect detail. I’m amazed my wife doesn’t take her glasses off before agreeing to kiss me.
@DonWhiteside also 4k uses tons of bandwidth to provide all that unnecessary detail. Or your meeting software scales it down to cope.
@djslack @DonWhiteside Definitely the latter.

@caffeineguy but this isn’t a cheap webcam. It’s an expensive webcam priced cheaply.
That said, does anyone that bought this last time know if it actually works in Linux? Care to post a ‘dmesg’ log plugging it in?
@caffeineguy so I broke out an old laptop running Elementary. The native Camera app goes to the onboard camera but web based tests can access it. It does show 640x480 on the one I used that showed details. Here is a dmesg log:
edit: webcamtests dot com shows 640x480. the webcamtest at veed dot io shows 1920x1080.

Got one of these last time around and have no regrets. Huge improvement over my janky laptop cam.
If I buy one of these I’m going to video myself naked doing the Macarena and post it to meh.
You don’t want me to buy one of these.
@OnionSoup Um. Yes. That would be terrible.
sets up to record
Okay, my desktop I use for Discord needs a non- potato webcam.

Thoroughly disappointed that it wasn’t a cat business suit for sale today. Classic meh misdirection

This time I unknowingly (with my order) signed up for a monthly membership fee… Very dishonest.
My feelings for this website are quite different now…

Does anyone know how to make this thing tilt pan zoom? Can’t find anything on their site or info. Thanks!
