I love the big screen. I went to the movies at least one a week with MoviePass even if only garbage was playing. I enjoy garbage if it’s on the big screen.
Apparently I personally made MoviePass go bankrupt.
@Targaryen No Alamo near me, but I feel like I would love them. They certainly prominently feature “no talking or texting” in their ads. If that is actually enforced, it would be something I would be willing to pay extra for.
I enjoy going to the movies. I go to way less since the unlimited Moviepass flopped. I will still go for movies I’m really excited about.
I also enjoy movies at home. My TV is 48", so not gigantic, but decent enough for my small living area. The surround sound is really nice. When I had some extra money way back when, I dropped $500-600 on a pioneer setup. Since then my front and rear speakers have been replaced with way bigger ones than I would ever need. I just did the rear speakers two weeks ago and the first movie I watched was the Matrix. I hadn’t had my rear speakers hooked up in a few years. Watching the movie made me so happy.
My issue is that I feel very distracted when I’m at home. I’ll pause to go to the restroom or get a snack and I’ll tend to browse on my phone. At the movie theater, I don’t do that. I only leave to the restroom if I feel like I’m going to pee my pants and can’t wait anymore, lol
Both have their place. I don’t go to the movies too often but enjoy it when I do. And, it’s usually the only time I have popcorn. I think the popcorn might be the actual reason I go, lol.
I’m ok with home watching almost anything; I only miss the big screen and sound for a few special movies.
Big movies with impressive scores (like the older Star Wars, Indiana Jones, epic space battles, huge ranges of land, epic visuals) really benefit from a movie screen and THX or better sound system. Dramas and comedies and the like, not worth spending the money for a theater seat.
Really enjoy the whole theater experience but not the cost so mostly it’s dual recliners with the spouse and watching the projector on a 6’ screen. Almost like being there… plus the snacks are better (chicken wings anyone?) and the beer choices are better.
I will make exceptions when TMO Tuesday throws a discounted ATOM ticket my way, or for something with a grand scale like the Star Wars movies etc.
Even though I am far more likely to get ticked off than the average person when other moviegoers talk or use their phone , I still vastly prefer to see films in the theater.
There is an episode of Seinfeld where George says that if he watches a movie at Jerry’s place “he is doing something”, but if he watches the same movie at home “he isn’t doing anything”.
I think that is one reason that I prefer seeing movies at the theater, I feel like I am doing something.
I have some kind of weird ADD with movies at home. I can watch endless hours of a tv show but I get this bored itch within a few minutes of a movie. So, theater is better because I’m trapped in a dark room and can’t (won’t) look at my phone or switch to a tv show. Also, better popcorn and way more soda than I would let myself drink at home.
Home for sure. I can’t stand being trapped in a theater with people surrounding me doing annoying things --talking, checking their phone, crinkling wrappers, spilling their drinks on us and not apologizing, snoring. Yes, I have experienced all of those things in a theater.
I usually like other people, but all bets are off when I go to a movie.
At home in PJs on a comfy couch with a large UHD screen and Dolby Atmos sound.
Although, we recently went to see the How to Train Your Dragon movie in the theater. Only because the kid wanted to.

Like to watch in theaters but rarely do these days.
Do you have a favorite theater? I’m almost entirely Alamo Drafthouse.

@lseeber A good movie is really just an excuse for that bucket of popcorn.
@ruouttaurmind Amen!!

Home! If the film peaks my interest I’ll watch. If not so much, I’ll still be comfy on the laptop!

I’ll be in the theater for Shrek 5…
@ruouttaurmind …looks cool… maybe I’ll join you!

Theaters are for live performances. A good home theater with a nice TV and surround system is for movies.
Besides, theaters are gross. Those seats have been farted in by countless people, and have never been cleaned. Just think about that.
No theater for me. No thank you.

In theater.
