@connorbush Nevermind. I see that they’ll ship for 30 euros. People were saying it’s “much cheaper”, but it looks to me that the difference is $16 after exchange rates… maybe worse if the credit card company imposes a unfavorable exchange rate or transaction fee.
@JerseyFrank So I went ahead and bought some. Flavors are nice, and the macro nutrients & fiber are more in line with what I should have once I get my ass back to the gym.
@connorbush I just ordered some joylent cuz I’ve been having trouble eating and I don’t want soylent poos so you may have just improved my life good job buckaroo
I did it for a while. Actually liked it. I always said I wished there were a bar or something just called “food” for when you need sustenance but don’t care what.
I had it for lunch a good bit and felt better about doing that than having some shitty fast food just to get out of the office. When I had a bottle for lunch I was fine through the day but inevitably starving at dinnertime. Probably psychological.
I still have a good bit and haven’t cancelled my subscription but keep pausing it.
Like the flavor of the liquid slightly better but it is way more expensive. Easy to take a bottle to work and stick in the fridge, though, so you’re buying convenience.
I did not eat it solely, but just for lunches. I might try a week of solely having it but my fiancee might get upset when I do.
In addition to Coffiest’s debut, Soylent will introduce a new product category with Soylent Bar. Soylent Bar offers the same complete nutrition, but in a lighter, more portable form factor. With only 250 calories, Soylent Bar makes an excellent snack or small meal, with a macronutrient breakdown of 38 percent calories from lipids, 43 percent calories from carbohydrates, and 19 percent calories from protein in each bar, providing one eighth of an average adult’s recommended dietary needs.
While I haven’t set any hard rules for myself, I’m basically trying to eat it for breakfast and lunch. Dinner if and only if my wife didn’t make dinner or the leftovers stink.
My wife is an atypical and excellent cook, though not every meal earns a “thumbs-up” from the family. She plans menus by algorithm. Here it is in pseudo-code:
Personal observation:
These “bar nutrition” and “drink nutrition” and meal replacement products and generic “food products” do not work as their inventors and marketers might wish, if the consumer eats/drinks 5-10x or more the recommended amount per meal.
Or as in the case of Nutriloaf, if the “consumer” eats 5-10x or less the recommended amount per meal.
I remember reading about Soylent in its early days. Having been burned by crowdfunding a couple times, I stayed out of this one and figured I’d check it out once it matured. It sounds like the incremental improvements they’ve been making have paid off. I thought the idea of having a separate bottle of oil to mix in was inconvenient. I’m glad they figured out a way to “powderize” it. Sounds like the texture of the 1.6 is better, too.
The 50% off a 12-pack of 2.0 bottles referral offer pushed me over the fence. I ordered those and a 12-pack of Coffiest last night. I figure I’ll start with a bottle of Coffiest to replace my coffee and Pop Tarts for breakfast, a bottle of 2.0 for lunch and regular dinner with the family. If I like it, I’ll switch over to the powder and see how things go; maybe ramp it up to close to 100%.
I tried the Coffiest, the bottled 2.0 and the powdered 1.6. The 2.0 is good. Smells and tastes like Cheerio milk to me. Coffiest is 2.0 with coffee. Good stuff. That 1.6 powder, though… Yeesh. I threw in some peanut powder to make it drinkable, but it wasn’t nearly as tasty as the 2.0.
I’m actually going one step further and doing the Soylent-inspired Keto Chow (http://ketochow.xyz). It’s got flavors, too.
I’m also interested in thoughts from @JerseyFrank.
Is it green?
@capguncowboy No, it’s off-white. It is slightly darker than pimple pus.
@JerseyFrank well, that sounds appealing. Pass.
@JerseyFrank but tastes very similar.
@JerseyFrank Just threw up a little in my mouth
/giphy dry heave
@JerseyFrank Come on man! @capguncowboyv , you’re no better!
I’ve heard about it quite a bit. I couldn’t do it.
Do you just hate food or is there a different reason for using it?
@RiotDemon I love food, but a few different things came together and convinced my idle hands to subscribe to the food supply.
Is your face turning red?
@galmaegi No? Will it?
@JerseyFrank Hope not! I remember the ceo’s face being super red though. It could be unrelated.
Are you excited about their new product coffiest?
http://www.theverge.com/2016/8/9/12414566/soylent-coffiest-coffee-meal-replacement-drink
@Ignorant I did not know about it until now. You might say I was @ignorant. But, no, I’m not excited. I’m not excited about Soylent at all.
@Ignorant And I’m not a fan of the liquid. Powder is more efficient to ship and store.
did you always aspire to be a meme?
@Lotsofgoats I am not familiar.
powder or bottled?
@communist Powder.
have you read chris ziglers one month experience? http://www.theverge.com/2014/7/17/5893221/soylent-survivor-one-month-living-on-lab-made-liquid-nourishment
@communist I have now.
I’ve done it. Made it a week. Good time. Had to add extra fiber.
@connorbush I also tried Joylent. Preferred Joylent.
@connorbush https://www.joylent.eu/blog/joylent-soylent
@connorbush Is it available stateside? How’s it compare on price? I read the blog post and I’d be will to switch it up.
@connorbush Nevermind. I see that they’ll ship for 30 euros. People were saying it’s “much cheaper”, but it looks to me that the difference is $16 after exchange rates… maybe worse if the credit card company imposes a unfavorable exchange rate or transaction fee.

@JerseyFrank even worse, mine got stuck in customs for a charge
@connorbush still so much better tasting it’s worth it to me
@JerseyFrank https://www.joylent.eu/usa

@Lotsofgoats we do what we can here at Connor Bush industries. People helping people.
@connorbush this stuff FINALLY got here. tastes like banana oatmeal, which is fine by me.
Have you considered spam instead?
What about Brainz?

@djslack
they are coming out with a soylent bar

@djslack https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutraloaf
@RiotDemon Ugh! I was excited, then disgusted.
@communist sounds interesting. Soylent did fulfill that desire but a bar would be easier and more portable.
@djslack http://www.mealsquares.com/ <-- i eat these. they are pretty dry, but otherwise they taste fine.
I had it for lunch three days in a row, and, well, turns out my soy intolerance is real. I liked it though. Too bad.
Sticking with mealsquares until I can find something better.
@katylava Day Zero’s blog post would’ve been titled “GI Distress” if I were keeping a blog.
I had mashed taters, chicken fried steak, country gravy, and corn on the cob tonight. For lunch, I had 5/6 of a frozen pizza. No breakfast.
Damn right it’s not spam… spam has more salt and fat.

And for someone who puts that much love and effort into cooking, who am I to deny her?
there’s supposed to be a break in there, but I missed the edit window.

@f00l You eat a lot of acid, f00l, back in the hippie days?

Hey @JerseyFrank, hows the stuff treating ya?

Hey @JerseyFrank, Still doing Soylent? I just tried it… It’s not too bad.
I’m probably gonna be soylent in the near future.
