@Kyeh
Yeah we were more inclined to watch it when the kids/grandkids were little. Now it just kind of runs in the background while we’re getting things ready.
Still :
@pakopako@pmarin
I know, as that’s why I took a job working for NYS for the past 5+ years to earn and get vested in the NYS retirement system.
Another cool thing about having worked for NYS is that they mandate employees at all levels to save at least a minimal level for retirement in their “Deferred Compensation” program, into which I put the maximum I was allowed in preparation for my “big day”- which amounted to a fairly decent additional investment.
I also had a variety of other accounts from 30+ years of previous jobs, including some each of 403-B’s, IRA’s, 501-K’s, etc., amounting to something like 6 or 7 separate accounts, which added up to a decent amount as well.
What are your plans to help others who didn’t do as well?
Due to (circumstances) I’m quitting one job and starting another in a couple of months. The old one had parts that I had to plan around and monitor and be on call for no matter what and the new one will be the same so the next 8 weeks will probably be the only chance between now and retirement to take a vacation with no work intruding on it. So, for the week of Thanksgiving we’ve booked a cottage on the beach in an area carefully selected for having stuff that all the kids and adults in the household enjoy. that it doesn’t rain. No idea yet what we’ll eat but turkey is overrated.
@algae1221
Good for you.
We did Thanksgiving on the beach with our two kids and the grandkids for several years as my sister-in-law had a vacation beach house that was generally empty at that time of year. Water in the Gulf of Mexico was still generally warm enough for us to get into and play around in and was frequently glass still.
One year we had a group of small manta rays working the surfline along the beach edge that we followed for quite a bit… standing in the water so that they could go on either side of us and then getting out and running down the sand to get back in the water in front of them again as they progressed down the beach. It was spectacular.
Enjoy this time together.
@cevans125 Condolences and Empathy.
Joining a new group of people similar to you can help a lot. Social group, volunteer group, random group. Hopefully next year will be better for you.
My mom works that day and the entire weekend so my side of the family isn’t getting together. Instead next weekend we’re driving out to a Mexican restaurant my mom and dad used to go to a lot when they were dating. The one by us (we used to go to all the time as kids and for birthdays and such) changed owners and menus and destroyed the food. It’s been a staple in the area for like 40 years and just completely trashed by new people, it’s a shame. So it’s gonna be a real treat next weekend.
@Star2236
For me, when I worked in retail, it was the only day I got to be off with pay until Christmas, but like Christmas, the day after was not something to look forward to.
Enjoy your “Mexican” family holiday!
Sort of.
Yes and no. Like the food. Don’t like the work.
Yep. Road trip to Nashville.
Another day another donut
Food and family time, but like @OnionSoup, not the work.
Two of the first three.
@phendrick do we get to use our imagination to decide which ones?
@kittykat9180 Answered below. “Empathy”.
As long as I’m not doing the cleanup.
I only something watch the halftime show, NOT for the last few years. The Commercial are Far better than the game!
@mycya4me
Same as the Super Bowl!
2 words…Macy’s parade!
@chienfou I used to like it more - now it seems like a long series of ads for various movies and TV shows. 🫤

Time off from work. I took the whole week off
@cbatte

/giphy happy dance
@cbatte paid…time off
@cbatte @njfan retirement… unpaid time off!
@cbatte @njfan
Happiness is a day off,
Ecstasy is a day off with pay.
@pmarin
IDK about your retirement sitch, but I am getting paid regularly, or I wouldn’t be able to afford to live in this house or eat.
@PhysAssist @pmarin fun. Not a lot of jobs have pensions, so I’ve got plans to create a monthly paycheck for everyone from their savings.

@algae1221 cottage on the beach… username “algae” seems right.
No, my mom died on Thanksgiving last year. This will be my first year without any family on the holidays.

@cevans125
God bless you and yours.
The holidays are a tough time when you’ve lost loved ones.
I don’t celebrate Halloween because for me the scariest holiday is thanksgiving, when all the scary people come out
@Millieberger1 They have to practice pushing, shoving, elbowing, and intimidating for Black Friday shopping.
I can’t wait for the new movies

Only for the turkey trots.
I’ll be running two 5Ks that day.
@kittykat9180
My first thought was “always keep the entrees above 160⁰ and you will avoid the turkey trots”…
@chienfou @kittykat9180
Great advice anyway…
Looks like it’s no for the win!
Voting tomorrow
Veteran’s Day next week
Boardgames show the week after
Then Thanksgiving to finish out the month
And then Christmas time will mark a whole year since my ceiling buckled (and it still looks that way… That alien tape is very transparent)
@pakopako

It’s good to have things to look forward to!
Sorry about your ceiling…
