Anyone use the serivce Shipt?
3Shipt is grocery shopping service where you create your list/order online, and someone does your shopping and delivers it to you within your defined 1 hour window.
I signed up for it last week and the first delivery was amazing. My shopper did a wonderful job, picked excellent produce and meat, and delivered right on time.
I want to share with locals/coworkers how amazing it is, however I’m curious to hear what the thoughts are on people that have had it for more than a week.
It was just launched in my area and am slightly suspicious that right now it’s in the too good to be true/sucker you in phase. All the sale items were the same price through the service as they were in the store. Even the non-sale items seemed to be regular store prices (based on memory). It just don’t see how this Shipt company is making money unless the store is giving them further reduced prices. Shipt claims there is a markup, but I’m just not seeing it. There is a $99.00 yearly fee, but they gave me $25 in free groceries. That would not be nearly enough for Shipt to pay their independent contractors to do shopping through the full year.
TL:DR: Have you used Shipt more than a week? If so, do you like it and does it seem cost effective?

Typo in the heading. How embarrassing.
@MrMark I have used Safeway’s home delivery, and Fry’s/Kroger has a “personal shopper” feature that let’s me make a grocery order online, then go to a drive-up window to receive my order. I’ve also used Amazon Prime Now a couple of times.
Never heard of Shipt though. I’m sure the low price is to generate buzz. Expect the company to either expire in 6 months, or start offering their “normal” pricing structure. This is history. Look at Webvan for an example.
Also, Uber has a drug store/grocery/restaurant delivery service rolling across the country as well.
Haven’t tried any delivery service myself, even going back to the heyday of Webvan/Home Grocer. But I don’t mind supermarkets, so there’s that.
My SO and I are shoppers/deliverers with them
AmA. (Almost)
Thanks for such kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed it
What state/city and what store is shopped
@CrossIT What/s the general guidance regarding substitutions? Friend of mine uses Instacart and they make ca-RA-zee swaps like he asked for orange soda (a specific brand) and they subbed in a lemon iced tea.
@borisparsley For this company, you choose and option. You can either tell the shopper to contact/text with any differences, use their best judgement on substitution, or don’t buy the product if not in stock.
In my situation (I chose use best judgement), I asked for a bread, which they were out of, and the shopper picked the same style in the store brand, which was fine for me. However the shopper stated, if it’s not acceptable you can contact the company and they will refund the cost of that item.
@borisparsley what the guy below you said is true.
Myself and SO would not have done that swap .(how the hell to sub tea for orange soda)
If you want orange fanta you might get Sunkist instead or value brand
If somebody complains to shipt about a bad substitution they will refund it but it hurts the shoppers reputation and rating so it’s in the best interest of the Shopper to choose a good substitution. If a good substitution cannot be found that Shopper will contact the customer and ask them what they want instead or if they want to delete the item from the order
Shipt has a $7 delivery fee for orders under $35, above that and delivery is free. Not sure how cost effective, but at the store I work at they’ve told us you can expect to pay an extra $5 for every $35 dollars in groceries. Also the drivers can get tips. On a similar note they have two subscriptions types monthly or yearly.
Nope. Services like this are never available in my area.
I should of looked at the current week before I made this post. I think we were in the launch phase pricing. The service has been in the area only a couple of weeks.
This week I’m starting to see some sales pricing differences. For example:
1# Strawberries $1.67 in Store, $1.89 through Shipt
Cantaloupe $1.99 v $2.19
Cereal $2.99 v $3.29
85% Ground Beef $3.99 v $4.19
Shreaded Cheese $2.00 vs $2.29
Ribeye $10.99 vs 12.09$
So everything seems to have anywhere between a 5-15% markup.
When you factor in a tip, it does start to become noticeably more expensive, but still not bad if you shop the sales.
So not the unbelievable value I thought, but still a worthwhile service in my opinion for those that prefer not to grocery shop.
@MrMark Shipt is not yet available in my area yet, but like you, I wondered how they could possibly be making enough money to pay their employees. We have, however, used the Walmart grocery service and it’s great. If you ask for a specific product and they don’t have it, i.e. a specific brand of salsa in an 8 oz. size, they substitute the 16 oz. size for the price of the 8 oz. My husband likes this service as he loathes going to the store and I am disabled so I can’t do it. You just drive up, the employee puts everything in your car (you dont even have to get out), they have been very pleasant and do not accept tips. We also order from Walmart online for non perishable items. Everything is packaged nicely and is sent by UPS or FedEx. Sometimes it can get a little ridiculous when they send a huge box with 1 item and tons of packing filler. Big waste of money for them and you’re stuck with a giant box to recycle. We have also used Target for non perishables. Most of the items are damaged in some way. Dented cans, smooshed boxes of cereal, etc. We don’t use them anymore. I know you asked about Shipt, but I thought I would let you know my experience with other options. I hope this helped or helps someone!
@MrMark factor in the cost of gas/mileage that you save
@Kidsandliz
+time and hassle

Re Walmart service
You just drive up to the front of the store?
And someone is there to get your food order (parts of your order might have to be refrigerated or frozen I presume) and put it in your car?
Is simeone there to greet cars?
How long does it take from the time you get there until you are loaded and ready to leave?
I normally do not think if Walmart CS wins.
Last time I was in a Walmart (following up on a deal rumor) there were no employees in electronics or nearby.
I cedthe store main # to ask if an electronics employee was available. The CS person (an in-store employee) sighed, said they would try.
After waiting a bit more, I gave up. As I was exiting the store 10 min later, I heard a call for electronics personnel over the store PA.
I got hopeful and went back to the dept. no one ever showed up.
I don’t really blame the employees. They work at s place where a bride conversation with another employee - a sentence or two - can generate a black mark, since the employee was “stealing time”.
@f00l Time plus hassle is $ cost free, at least in my case.
@f00l I’ve never used it, but with Walmart you order ahead of time and tell them what day/time you’ll pick up. Designated pick-up area is at side of store. I suppose they wait until you get there and call them before packing the perishables.
@yahsah15 I believe they pack and refrigerate your order elsewhere in the store. Kroger does this locally, too, and there I’ve had a conversation with an employee who was “shopping” for online pickup orders. He had a cart with multiple totes and pick lists for the orders he was filling, and he was picking meats when I talked with him. He said he stays pretty busy with them.
I’ve not done the Wal-Mart service, but at least around here it gets good reviews from people i know who have used it. One of my coworkers said you show up, they greet you, bring you a bottle of water, and bring your order out to load in just a couple of minutes, hassle-free.
@f00l I’m sure each Walmart is different. Most likely if you go to your stores website, it will have that information. Or you can call your local store. It’s super easy, shop at your leisure and you can save your grocery list so it’s there the next time you shop. They generally do a pretty good job of choosing the items on your list. Try it once with a small list and see if you like it. If not, you haven’t lost anything. Good luck!
I’ve been using Amazon Fresh, which is way too expensive and has horrible selection, but I’m like, really lazy.
@katylava
Laziness is good.
@katylava Well amazon just bought whole foods so something might change…
@Kidsandliz maybe for people who shop at whole foods already. In my experience only kroger carries the stuff i want.
@katylava There’s no Kroger where I am, but I’d love to hear why it’s so good. I see there’s one in Turbotville, but I have no idea where that is.
@aetris I don’t know if they are better overall, I just notice that if I go anywhere else I can’t get exactly what I want… I have to choose a different brand or product. I suppose there are things Kroger doesn’t carry that other people consider essential.
I cancelled Amazon Fresh and switched to Shipt since they will go to the Kroger near me so they can get all the things I want. Just used them today and it was pretty cool.
@katylava see, you’re not as lazy as you thought! Getting everything you want on the same day you order is another great perk.
Do coupons work with this service?
I don’t use them, they’re a PITA. But once in a great while …
And I know some persons w large families who use them.
@f00l coupons do not work with shipt
