anyone here an Esty Seller/ familiar with their policies?
3So my friend has a small side gig making leather stuff/selling it on etsy(tries to stay away from the kinkier stuff).
I just bought the .com Domain with the name of his storefront, LeatherworksRL, I was thinking of just setting it up as a simple redirect to his Esty storefront, but am for some reason afraid that might run him afowl of etsy’s rules/TOS…
so… am i just being silly?
does anyone here kno fo sho?

I have an Etsy store but there’s never anything in it due to their fees for posting OOAK items. The last few times I shopped on there, looked like the place was being overrun with thrift store stuff billed as “vintage” or “antique”, which is not at all what I thought Etsy was supposed to be about, so clearly I don’t understand their rules.
@moondrake Maybe a year ago they changed their policy to allow mass produced stuff and not just allow handmade OOAK stuff. The rule was already being broken over and over (such as Amazon painted straws sold in bulk there resold as handmade on etsy, chinese factories making quilts…) so I guess they went for money and the hell with the original mission.
@Kidsandliz They’ve been allowing people to sell mass market Chinese goods for a lot longer than a year, although they may have just changed their policy to officially allow it.
About six years ago I posted a collection of nothing but stickers for the back of Mac laptops that featured Disney’s Snow White (unlicensed, I’m sure) holding the Apple logo. I had the identical item from two dozen Etsy stores.
Etsy deleted my collection, saying it violated their policies. They did nothing about all the stores selling the same Chinese pirate Snow White sticker.
well, the info I couldn’t find on Etsy, our Google overlords found in mere nanoseconds.
turns out to be something quite a commonly done.
so i set it up.
LeatherworksRL.com goes right to his etsy storefront. (only has 2 items for sale right now, but hey, it’s a side gig)
I know several etsy people who redirect their personal domain name to their etsy store… I don’t see how it could be against the rules… the more business the etsy store gets, the more of a commission etsy gets.
I think the only way to get in trouble is to have a link on Etsy that directs elsewhere (thereby avoiding commission).
I seem to recall that being possible in the early days of eBay, but they clamped down & eliminated it soon enough.
Yep, not a problem at all. I have mine set up that way. Looks a lot nicer on business cards.
As someone who also has a small side gig making leather stuff (but NOT shying away from the kinky stuff), I wish your friend best of luck! My website isn’t exactly a redirect to my Etsy page, but my store is linked everywhere. Have never had a problem with it!
@QuietDelusions link?
@RiotDemon Thank you.
@RiotDemon The website is http://lustybunnyleather.com/ if you’re curious. Haven’t been great on updating it, or Etsy for that matter, oops! (I blame being too damn busy actually making things!)
@QuietDelusions That is the problem with art, you can make it or you can sell it, doing both is exhausting. The most successful artists I know do art full time, their spouse manages the business end, and the whole family packs and ships. That way it’s really a family business.
@moondrake Truest thing I’ve read on the internet today!
