Anyone else dealing with the VW diesel fallout?
92011 Jett tdi sportswagon. It was a happy car. Went through a lot, but we never had problems with it. Until the whole “oops, we lied and cheated and ducked up”.
I signed up as soon as I could, got the paperwork submitted as soon as I could, accepted the offer to payoff the loan + $$$ promptly, scheduled the buyback as soon as I could, March 30. 2 weeks after the final payment on the loan. I called, in January, to make sure it would be ok. They said sure, you just have to bring the title and get the payoff balance from the bank.
Show up tonight, and nope, seems they aren’t goin to do that, have to start over and complete the whole thing again. Spent an hour plus to learn that, and the best their customer service manager could do was offer his ‘sincere apologies.’
Login, submit the images of the title, state they already have the other documents. Get an email saying no, the are missing my ID. How? No clue, but it’s missing.
I’m just beat. I went from a happy VW customer to someone who will never buy another VW. Period. Every step of this process has been painful, slow, and frustrating because the nothing was communicated well and too many things have changed without notice. I have spent 80+ hours on this, not including the time shopping for a replacement vehicle!
I need a drink.

That sounds very much like dealing with my mother’s Long Term Care insurance company. It seems like they make it so complicated in the hopes that people will give up dealing with it. And then guess what? They don’t have to pay what they owe.

This is on top of my SO having major health issues. Started in 2015, he’s now 1 year out from a heart transplant. Guess who got to deal with his insurance, his ex, his work, his family, etc?
So much to be grateful for, I know. But right now…damn. just feels like I’ve been kicked around too much.
Was the payoff the result of a Court Settlement or consent decree?
I’d consider filing complaints with every state and federal agency that deals with this, plus the court of other authority who approved the settlement, plus twitter on their thread, plus everywhere else you can imagine.
They may suddenly decide its worth taking care of you.
It’s the Court Settlement from the class action lawsuit following the findings that VW programmed the on-board computer to detect emissions testing and change performance to pass.
I’m still getting my energy back and will see where it goes. I pointed out that all of this was their doing, and that was what got their sincere apology…yeah, cause that’s just great. The sincere apology of a night shift call center supervisor. Boy, warm and fuzzy. Sure he’s a great guy, but this is well past inconvenient. An apology doesn’t make up for it.
@Mavyn Seconded posting on twitter/facebook- if you don’t have a facebook, make one just for this. Calling companies out publicly often gets a much faster response.
Sorry it didn’t go well for you @Mavyn . There’s unfortunately plenty more horror stories on the TdiClub forum. Mine went through without a hitch. Had a 2015 Passat, now have a 2017 Golf Sportwagen. I miss the efficiency, low end torque and 6 speed manual though…
My paperwork went through in December and the transfer appointment was in February. I still owed on the car, they paid it off and gave me the balance as an ETF.
However, I am having issues with an extension on the “customer loyalty package” I was able to call in December to get an extension on both Dealer and Visa cards, but it would take 4-6 weeks. I finally received the dealer card, but not the visa. Got them to issue another - but it’s going to take ANOTHER 4-6 weeks! What a bunch of shit.

It’s good to hear that it did go through well for some. Do you know anyone going with the fix/repair option?
@Mavyn No. I thought about keeping it, but from the getgo, was disappointed in the lack of economy compared to my 99 Jetta TDI - that one got 40mpg city, even with 240K miles on it. You can’t tell me that in 15 years, they can’t even equal that?!

have a coworker dealing with this - not sure where he is in the process. i know he was doing a search the other day for a 2015 sport wagon that is supposedly fixed now. haven’t heard of him dealing with any of these headaches…yet. i was interested in a VW until all this because of how much people liked them. bought a Subaru instead.
You’ll have your superb fuel economy back, once the EPA rolls back all restrictions, ever.
@PocketBrain Part of the problem (and not excusing VW for what they did) is that the EPA had a hair up its ass about noncommercial vehicle diesels for years and was doing a lot to try and keep them from getting a foothold in the US, setting almost unreachable standards (you could reach them by throttling performance to unacceptable levels, also a disincentive to sales). Same with what they’ve forced on the light truck market with diesel piss injection and particulate filters, forcing the replacement of a lot of highly refined mechanicals with less reliable (and slightly cleaner) electronics. And now making it hard to impossible to purchase surplus military vehicles for those so inclined, with any hope of registering them and using them on the street.
There’s a lot of demand for the capabilities of high mileage high torque small diesels with decent performance here, and they could have been made if emission targets were not so draconian, but the EPA was the proverbial immovable object… so VW cheated. People got cars they liked, VW sold cars that showed the public at large that yes, diesels could be great, fun to drive, efficient cars. And (from what I’ve heard) even when running in their fun/dirty mode they were actually still not that bad, especially compared to diesel cars from previous decades.
I look at VW like a midsize bootlegger during Prohibition. I won’t compare them to Capone and co because they weren’t killing people, just selling them what they wanted in the face of what really is a ridiculous prohibition by an agency that had become too powerful and unaccountable.
I have a TDI Jetta wagon, 2004, so it’s not a part of this scandal and settlement. Like this vehicle a lot.
Aficionados and those with knowledge, is there a future for TDI’s in North America?
@f00l coworker was talking about how the 2015 “fixed” ones may go for a major premium because currently VW has halted all production of TDIs until all this is cleared, possibly several years. i’d ask him more, but he’s off on fridays.

They just got clearance to resume selling them in 8 states. Once all the court cases conclude, i expect they will sell them again.
Notarized acceptance form uploaded and pending review. Not sure why, but there’s an additional $1230 on it this time around. Woo?
Closing scheduled for April 17th. Fingers and toes crossed.
Interesting that when I initially submitted everything it took DAYS to get to the next step.
I did post on the VW Facebook page, and a tweet, no response. Not surprising, just more disappointment.
