Any suggestions for a good red wine?
3Don't worry, beer folks. I'll still join in the next Beer Fuku if one comes up. My husband and I usually drink red wine at home and we are slowly transitioning off beer towards wine.
So, who drinks wine here? We've been drinking Rex Goliath Pinot Noir and are pretty happy with it. I'd love to know other good Pinot Noirs or Merlots. Something easy to find and inexpensive.

define inexpensive.
@carl669 I pay $10.99 for 1.5 liter Rex Goliath Pinot Noir at Kroger.
We are big fans of The Maitre D' The Boxer and Two Left Feet from MollyDooker Wines.
I'm really partial to Malbec. Graffigna Centenario Estate Bottled Reserve (any reserve seems better to me) is really good and under $15. Kaiken is also a good, inexpensive Malbec worth trying.
@ACraigL @galmaegi I've been drinking a Malbec out of Argentina called Zolo. I'm really liking it. If there's a BevMo near you, you should take advantage of their 5 cent sales. Buy 1 get a second of the same for 5 cents. It's a great way to try wines you might not otherwise have purchased.
Have you tried much in the way of Malbec? If you enjoy Merlot, Malbec from Argentina (Mendoza) is worth a try, and the cheap end is loaded up with decent examples. Chilean Malbec will be a bit more intense and tannic.
@brhfl
Thanks @jimmyd103 @ACraigL @brhfl I'll add it to my list!
Cocoban from Trader Joe's is a popular blended wine, including zinfandel, cabernet, merlot, and others. Very affordable.
@KDemo I should get out during work tomorrow, and I need fuel for dissecting these Striimlight Minis… Maybe a trip to TJs is in order…
@brhfl - You can never go wrong with a trip to Trader Joe's. (Pro tip: don't go when you're hungry.)
I'm with @ACraigL and @brhfl, Argentinian Malbec was one of the first reds I realized I liked. I think it was Gnarly Head, something with a tree on the label...
Jacob's Creek Cabernet Sauvignon is pretty good and I recently was given a bottle of Cameron Hughes Old Vine Zinfandel that I really liked. I'm not a big wine drinker, but those are all bottles that my wine snob friends have approved and that non-wine-drinker-me enjoyed, so they might be worth a shot.
How about keeping an eye on Woot Wine? HAHAHAHA. But seriously you can get some good deals there on good wine.
Also, if there is an Aldi grocery store near you, many have a very wide selection of wine as very inexpensive prices. The brands vary though so trial and error will find something you like.
For a random splurge for you, because it is not inexpensive, is Marilyn Merlot - very good wine!!!
@cbilyak All you people in states where grocery stores can sell booze, hrmph!
I second wine.woot. Only reason I ever pay attention to the site. Also, sometimes there are deals to be had on Amazon.
@cbilyak lol I knew someone would wine.woot!
Red, red wine? It's up to you.

Apparently you can also get it in more affordable boxes.
After the first few bottles, it really doesn't matter anymore.
@Pavlov I'll have to remember that.
Also... Menage A Trois is always a winner... http://www.menageatroiswines.com/wines/red?ag=1
@smartr the midnight stuff is pretty good
I'm a bottom fisher for wines, but with a floor that sits (usually) comfortably above jug wines. Columbia Crest Grand Estates (Merlot or Cab) or Red Diamond Merlot (all Washington State wines) are hard to beat in their price range ($8 by me) and very widely available. The CC from Horse Heaven Hills (H^3) is even better for a few bucks more. For an Argentine Malbec, my current favorite is Agua de Piedra ($11 locally). In the $13 range, Hess Select Cab or Merlot are consistent and excellent wines.
