@Foxborn was it where there was a "confrence call" between Madame Vastra, Jenny, Strax, Clara, and River? and they went to Trenzaolre? if so, all you've Missed is the 50th anniversary Special("the Day of the Doctor"), and the Christmas Special("the Time of the Doctor") which ends (basically) with regeneration, and Yesterday's Season Premeire "Deep Breath" Which is playing in select theaters tomorrow night (8/25) @ 7 &9:30 pm http://www.fathomevents.com/event/doctor-who-deep-breath-premiere
@earlyre I'm going to say yes, Graveyard Planet right? Hints at the 11th doctor? I'm mad I haven't seen the 50th, but I can't fork out the kind of money to buy it and no cable, no Netflix ect
@Bogie Since my above post, I watched part of an episode because it was on the antenna TV. It was an OLD one...the guy with the curly afro. He and some chick were dealing with this black rock-covered (rocks were black, not sure about the actors) aliens in a cave/mine or something. (very rock-themed show) At the end, the chick gets out of the phone booth which then disappears and she makes some comment about how he "blew it". I think he's supposed to be cool with that hair cut, but I'm not sure...It was the 70s I think. I have no idea what it was about.
I'm going to have to wait to catch the new episode(s). I am pretty stoked that we're shifting to different type of Doctor. They were getting weirdly younger and younger. But I'll have to avoid this thread until later.... spoilers ;)
Doctor Who fan, reporting in. I mean, I'm not like a full-blown Whovian, but it's among one of my favorite shows to watch.
I wouldn't call it an amazing show, but it doesn't have to be for me to love watching it.
Has the new season premiered? I won't be able to check it out for a while, but I'm interested in how Capaldi will do. He's not an amazing actor from what I've seen in his previous work, but then again no Doctor has been (except for Eccleston, but his acting abilities were severely underused in DW)...
My wife and I have been wanting to watch Doctor Who, but I'm not sure how far back to start. Should I start at the very beginning or is it like ST:TNG, Fringe, and Parks and Recreation where you have to struggle through the first season before it starts to get good? With the longevity of Doctor Who I'm afraid I may have to struggle through five or ten years.
@SSteve The two best options are to either start way back at the very beginning of the show, which I personally wouldn't recommend (Old Doctor Who is nifty, but can be painful to watch), or with the start of the 9th Doctor when the show was brought back in 2005. You COULD begin pretty much at any new Doctor, but it would probably be best for a little continuity to begin at one of those two recommended spots (Mainly at the 9th, the new show). Otherwise you'll get criss-crossed with some crazy wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey confusion. Nothing too severe, but I always find any "Who dafuq is that?" moments annoying in a show, if I haven't been keeping up.
@SSteve I recommend starting with the 9th doctor (series 1). I've gone back and watched some of the very first season (from before I was born) and it's fun to see the origins of some of the stuff I know and love from "modern" Doctor Who, but it is slooooow. Eccleston was a great Doctor, but his talents were underused. Tennant is my favorite Doctor, especially the stuff with Catherine Tate. But just starting there would probably leave you confused.
I just started with the new series on Netflix earlier this year and I am torn. I enjoy some parts of it and others I am just... meh. I still watch though.
Mrs. Oppo and I liked it last night. We did have a problem decoding the Scottish accent and had to rewind it a few times to understand what he said (closed captioning may be turned on next week).
The story itself was a good mix of the scary and funny. That being said, it takes time to get used to a new doctor. You will always have "your doctor" and there is a feeling of guilt for liking the new guy too much. And at some point, much like Clara (and Rose, etc), you will accept him and begin to like him for his unique traits and quirks.
@earlyre Thanks. Surprisingly it will be in a movie theatre here. Unfortunately buying a ticket is a want and not a need at the moment… guess I will have to wait for reruns or visit a friend who has netflix.
Hubby and I liked it. Tbh I'm ready for Clara to go. Dunno why but I just never really liked her. I'm excited to see where capaldi takes it. I've read that Smith's era was like a fairytale and that with capaldi the fairytale is over. So I think it'll be darker. Any weird theories about Missy? Did you watch the aftershow? @clonetek
@clonetek Alton brown was in it! Idk if you're also into food but I thought he was pretty funny. And it's always nice to see separate interests collide
Are we fans? Well, we just got back from a week in the UK, which included a special side trip to Cardiff to go to the Doctor Who Experience and visit many of the filming locations nearby. My sweetie was wearing his highly accurate hand-knitted Season Twelve scarf replica the whole time.
As for the new guy, the episode was a bit overwrought, but I like Capaldi. I also like having an older doctor again. I was really tired of that whole "Doctor Boyfriend" vibe.
I've been a fan since the '05 relaunch, have worked my way through the classic who on netflix, but i prefer the new stuff, and Ten will always be"MY" Doctor... as evidenced by my sole purchase from Build-a-Bear workshop:
My buddy that always tried to get me into the old stuff before '05, couldn't stand Smith, and pretty much has avoided his run.
of my collection of 150 T-Shirts(85 Woot, 65 others), 18 so are Doctor Who themed. in other words, while my wardrobe might suggest otherwise, I ain't no Hipster d-bag. I liked this stuff before it was super popular, and am not wearing it ironically.
I will love Who again when Moffat hands over the reins. Meanwhile, I enjoy it for what it is and try hard to not analyze all the things that don't make sense and the misogynistic BS that goes on. Clara is the most obnoxious Mary Sue, with such inconsistent characterization (Why would she have a problem with Capaldi's Doctor given as she should know better than anyone how varied the faces of the Doctor have been). Though I have a theory with this: New regeneration cycles start old, because the Doctor was old when he first regenerated. They progressively get younger, as a survival mechanism intended to give each new regeneration more time to live. Which, since Capaldi is the first of a new cycle, is why he's old again. It bumped back to the first Doctor's age, minus a bit.
@Jamileigh17 Why would she know better than anyone how the Doctor regenerates? Those other Clara-etts (Oswin, etc) saw that, not this one. She didn't re-integrate all of those experiences.
I’m definitely feeling the new Doctor. I was excited when it was announced and after seeing the episode I think they made the right call. It appears Capaldi is going to bring darker side to The Doctor and I’ll enjoy that. I thought the moment in the episode where you are afraid he won’t be there for Clara was brilliant (I didn’t want to get specific and give any spoilers). There is that question in your mind of what is this version of The Doctor is really going to be like and I think if they tried to create that moment with Smith or Tennant it wouldn’t have worked as well. That’s the genius that Capaldi is bringing to the role. On a side note, I understand it takes a bit to get used to the Scottish accent but I’m so glad they let him keep it.
I enjoyed it. I like Capaldi as the Doctor. I think he brings some of the history in while maintaining the manic enthusiasm from 10 & 11. And...Really? His accent isn't that strong.
I like Clara--sometimes. Sometimes she's brilliant and edgy and likable, and sometimes she's an utter soppy mess. Moments of both in this episode.
I liked Capaldi in the new episode, but I think it'll take a couple of episodes before I really identify him as The Doctor. I had the same problem with Tennant though, because Eccleston brought the role back in such a big way then disappeared after one season. Smith I picked up and knew immediately as the doctor, his entrance was great.
I think the reason I didn't immediately identify with Capaldi is that the story focused a lot on Clara and how she handles the changing Doctor.
As far as companions go, Clara is my favorite of the new series. I really couldn't stand Rose (or her mom). Donna was marginal, but she had a big mouth that annoyed me. I really liked her dad, and wish we saw more of him. Martha went from nurse to hardcore military lady, didn't much care for her character either. Amy and Rory were all right. I'm glad they're getting away from the "boyfriend Doctor" they've had for so long now.
i,m at least a season behind. last i aw was name of the doctor (i think)

@Foxborn yes. so your're just 2 specials behind, not a whole season.
@earlyre could be worse then
@earlyre Thanks for the link! I'm going to see a 7pm show tomorrow! :D
@Thumperchick 2 hour drive for me :(
I've never watched a single episode.
@medz Same here
@medz I have watched exactly one single episode, but I couldn't tell you which Doctor or season. I think the earth got destroyed.
@DaveInSoCal I've seen the first 'new' episode, with mannequins I think. It seems like a show I want to get behind, but meh.
@marklog I agree, I saw that same episode and I kinda liked it and was intrigued but it just didn't grab me that much.
@medz I watched one episode, with some goopy monsters. Costumes were terrible, dialogue was terrible. Decided it wasn't worth my time.
@Bogie Since my above post, I watched part of an episode because it was on the antenna TV. It was an OLD one...the guy with the curly afro. I wasn't sure how I would feel, but I actually liked him.
@iluvmingos same here
I don't know yet. I won't be able to watch it until it's on Hulu+. :-(
I'm going to have to wait to catch the new episode(s). I am pretty stoked that we're shifting to different type of Doctor. They were getting weirdly younger and younger. But I'll have to avoid this thread until later.... spoilers ;)
I tried a few episodes of the "new" (2005 or so) series and couldn't really get into it. I tried though.
Doctor Who fan, reporting in. I mean, I'm not like a full-blown Whovian, but it's among one of my favorite shows to watch.

Can't wait to find out how he do, though.
@Talidan yah, the new series started tonight.
My wife and I have been wanting to watch Doctor Who, but I'm not sure how far back to start. Guide me, mehvians!

@SSteve start with series one! (2005) http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Doctor_Who_serials#Series_1_.282005.29
@clonetek @Talidan Thanks. Series One it is!

@oppodude Yeah, I had to turn closed captions on a few times to understand everything.
What??? Last night was't a rerun????? And I went to bed before it came on?????????? And I don't have cable or Netflix - sigh.
@Kidsandliz Check to see if this is happening in you area (if you are free tomorrow evening (8/25) http://www.fathomevents.com/event/doctor-who-deep-breath-premiere

@hollboll My DVR recorded the aftershow, but I don't know if I'll watch it. I'm not a fan of shows like that.
@clonetek Alton brown was in it! Idk if you're also into food but I thought he was pretty funny. And it's always nice to see separate interests collide
@hollboll I'm with you on Clara. She's always just... off?
@hollboll Alton was fun. He also tweeted some amusing photos from after the afterWho show.
Cipaldi is great, but the writing yesterday was, well... mediocre.
@dunda
@dunda Steve Moffatt can write a great episode by itself, but he's (IMHO) been a horrible show runner.
@airynne my feelings exactly

I actually Like the fact that The Doctor's Gone Scot.
now if he could only have been Ginger...
Nope nope nope nope nope, skipped to the bottom and tl;dr this thread, waiting to see it tomorrow night in theaters.

Alert. New spinoff in same universe. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/entries/953c5b1f-3cc8-4db9-8184-f1b6567260f1
@sohmageek oooooooOOOOOOOOOoooooooo
Yes and I'm ignoring the rest of this unless everyone promises no spoilers I only finished season 8 last month
