@Cerridwyn I’ve got one. I bought it mainly for the bags. I have the Food Saver version of this contraption. It’s perfect & convenient for fridge storage, but I still wouldn’t trust it for long-term freezer storage. It absolutely helps to keep lunch meats & cheeses fresher in the fridge though.
These bags that come with this though are much better than Food Saver bags, so it may be ok for the freezer. But I’ve gotten (freezer) burned by the Food Saver version of these bags before…
This will work fine with Food Saver & generic port-style vacuum bags, but it will not work on the Food Saver containers.
@psbales How are the ports holding up for you on these? We haven’t tried the newer Food Saver bags that are meant for the freezer. We only have the original ones, the ones they say not to use to freeze stuff. Which we do all the time, for bread and similar foods that we want to access frequently. The little, oval-shaped plastic piece that keeps the air in eventually loses its grip on the bag, but retains an amazing tenacity when it finds the kitchen floor. We left a couple still stuck to the vinyl tile of our last apartment.
@InFrom I’ve only seen the new Food Saver bags; I haven’t tried them out. But they look like very similar construction to the Anova bags.
I haven’t tried freezing the Anova bags, but I’ve had no issue with them losing vacuum in the fridge. They’re definitely better quality than the ports on the old-style Food Saver bags. I’ve had Food Saver bags fail in the fridge, and one or two of them even fail almost immediately after sealing.
@mjonczak It looks like there are knockoff bags available on Amazon for much, much cheaper, which would make it worth it. At that price it’s ridiculous.
I love my Food Saver vacuum sealer, but I’ve found that sealing bags this way (through a port) doesn’t create a long-lasting seal.
So I’m thinking this would be good for the fridge to help things last a few more days, but not for longer term storage. But then again maybe their Precision Port™ is just amazing and I don’t know what I’m talking about.
@awk I’ve noticed the same from those “space bags” for clothes and stuff. Even with the port sealed and clamped shut with the little screw-top, they just don’t hold vacuum.
@awk That’s exactly what I use this one for. I got this off of SideDeal a few weeks ago, mainly for the bags. I have the FoodSaver version of this doohickey, but the FoodSaver bags lose their vacuum too quickly. I’ve had a few fail outright. The Anova bags seem to be much better so far.
Having said that, I still wouldn’t trust them for long-term storage. But they’re super quick & convenient for keeping stuff such as lunch meats & cheese fresher in the fridge.
For freezer storage, I’ve got a chamber vacuum sealer.
One note, while this sealer works on FoodSaver vacuum bags without an issue, it does not work with their containers.
@purwin 12" x 16", if they’re like the ones I got (bought this handheld sealer plus bags from manufacturer website during the holidays. Haven’t used it yet, so can’t comment on actual performance yet).
Fwiw, the bags are intended to be reusable, also.
@triplebud I disagree - we’ve used their sous vide for years and it’s been great. So great that the rest of my family got a couple and they love it.
Also, we have a diff model food sealer from Anova - my husband is the one to use it mostly, so I don’t have as much direct experience, but he likes it enough that we bought another to gift.
That’s just our experience - maybe we’ve been lucky or my expectations are low, but we’re happy with what we have from Anova.
@epicadventure@triplebud Same here. I also have their Sous Vide & used it for the last few years. (Only way I’ll make pork tenderloin now.) It’s been completely trouble-free.
I also have an AvidArmor chamber vacuum sealer, but I’m told it’s the same OEM ‘guts’ of the Anova sealer. Also been trouble-free, and perfect for making freezer bags of stuff, especially liquidy things like soups, chilis, and sauces. I’d imagine the Anova version of it is just as great (if expensive).
@epicadventure@psbales I have their steam induction convection oven that has been replaced twice, sous vide that was replaced once. The new sous vide makes a loud sound now but im tired of getting replacements. Im glad you had a good experience with them but I have not. Again… customer service is always good and I got my replacement in a timely manner plus they paid for shipping back.
@triplebud I have the oven and love it. Lasted a year before an issue arose, customer service sent me a new one without much effort. It was great, new model… though it made a strange sound and would not connect to wifi. They sent me another one, which is refurbished… and im talking with them now. - But the product is great overall. I think the first issue was falling fan motor, which happens and if it was out of warranty, probably would have been an easy enough fix.
@bizzaregood@triplebud@psbales and everyone else above with interest in this product and experience with food saver, here’s some feedback. This product has an excellent pump and excellent bags. Others you can find at different price points on Amazon are worse or no better, both the bags and pump. The Anova has a much stronger pump and a rubber seal that protects the pump from liquid. Others do not. I spent 2+x for a Zwilling and it died quickly after liquid got into the pump. Their bags are no better.
The Anova bags are as good as food saver bags but the seal is not foolproof. Checking and repumping bags in the fridge every few days is important.
A hint when working with “juicy” foods. Fold a few sheets of paper towel and insert between the food and the seal before pumping. It works wonders.
I noticed that the summary left fruit out of the perishable part of the write up. Would this extend the shelf life of strawberries and other fruit in the fridge?
@DanTheManimal we started putting blueberries and strawberries in larger mason jars and were amazed at how long they stayed fresh versus the plastic containers they come in. I only mention because I’m not sure how blueberries will hold up to vacuum sealing, but the effectiveness of glass jar storage surprised me.
@DanTheManimal@tkaos We use the Food Saver containers for berries & other ‘delicates’ occasionally. It certainly helps to keep them from becoming science experiments for longer than just having them in the packaging container alone.
Unfortunately, the this Anova sealer isn’t compatible with the containers, unless you wanna get creative with parts from a hardware store to make an adapter.
do these bags work well for sous vide? the food saver have leaked a few times, not enough to really hurt the steaks but enough that i had to wash everything.
@Noddy93 you’re going to want to be sure the port is above the water level, unless you want to risk it on something that cooks super quick. Deep water and using a binder clip or chip clip to hold the top of the bag above the water level solves it. I won’t ever go back to these zip bags, though. Even with the hassle of hauling out the big foodsaver, I’d rather do that and spend $.10 on a custom bag than $2+ on one of these.

@yakkoTDI Pull my finger.
Ugh, more plastic.
Anyone have one??
How does it compare to my foodsaver??
And only their bags??

Can I use my leftover breast milk bags?
@mexicantacos
Better be careful, with THIS CROWD you might have orders for said breast milk!
@Lynnerizer @mexicantacos I’m just looking for a leftover breast (I already have a rightover model).
Who oh who will be the first to make the comment that this thing sucks…?

Ten (1) extra bags for $26? Wouldn’t it be better to purchase TWO (2) handheld vacuum sealers??!!

I’m seeing an unnatural pattern of things that suck here.
How do you wash this? The first time with a liquid will get very messy, hopefully just in your hand.
@hchavers There’s a plastic piece that acts as a reservoir to catch liquids. This piece pops off for easy cleaning.
How big are the bags?
@purwin 12" x 16", if they’re like the ones I got (bought this handheld sealer plus bags from manufacturer website during the holidays. Haven’t used it yet, so can’t comment on actual performance yet).
Fwiw, the bags are intended to be reusable, also.
@purwin
Some random items for scale - a dollar and a standard roll of paper towels. Bags are bigger than I expected.
@epicadventure @purwin Look at Mr. Moneybags over here with money…and bags.
Anyone else wondering how big those vacuum bags are? They don’t look like they’d hold much.
@InFrom look up 2"
@ybmuG Thanks, saw that this morning.
Can’t seal the deal
My precision port is putting a straw in a Ziploc bag and sucking the air out.
Any good for use with evidence bags? I’m considering becoming a CSI.
Anova products are terrible but their customer service is pretty good

@bizzaregood almost identical situation here! I do love mine when its working. makes an ideal proofing oven

Seal of approval?
@mehrrychristmas
I wonder how well this would work for weed storage?
@olsmeister Why would you want to store dandelions?
I suppose the big question for me is how expensive additional bags are.
EDIT: answering my own question, $26 for 10 here: https://www.amazon.com/Anova-Culinary-Precision-Port-Vacuum/dp/B09R2D8KV5
At $2.60 each, those reusable bags better be re-re-re-re-re-reusable, at least.
These were cheaper on MorningSave a couple months ago with a 15% coupon code. That deal also included the extra bags.
@jjoye Debbie Downer is in the .

@maaaa @Noddy93 Anova is one of the leaders in the sous vide field, and they claim that these are good for a multi day cook.
Why cant you just suck the air out with your mouth? I bet you are pretty good at it.
Some folks that I know can suck a golf ball through a garden hose. Just Saying.
@TexterTusher And some claim they can can suck-start a Harley.
