An Attempt to Break @joelmw's Verbosity Record
39Or how Barney found her way to the Meh website.
One day I was watching 60 Minutes and saw this:
I was hooked. Here was a computer like nothing I had ever seen before. Hmm, back up a minute. In 2007, I didn't own a computer; I knew almost nothing about them. But this! This was wonderful and I wanted one. So, after seeing this in the spring, I watched and waited and looked for any info about the progress being made with these computers. And then, I guess it was in the fall, that OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) offered their Buy One,Give One Deal. Buy one for yourself and a child in a poor country gets one. So, I called immediately and ordered one.
On Christmas Eve, we had a snowstorm. My neighbor waddled over to my house with some cookies she had made. And lo and behold, parked in a snowbank was my brand new OLPC computer (this was better than a Red Ryder BB Gun). I brought it into the house and waited for it to warm up. Luckily, to help past the time, I had cookies to eat.
When I opened the box, there was my little green and white computer and a pamphlet. Nothing else, no directions. Nothing. Stumped, I plugged it in. Although it had a battery, I didn't know that it should be charged first thing before use. Anyway. There was a glowing light, so I thought the computer would work. So, I pressed the button and it started up.
On the home page was an XO avatar that looked like this and it said to name it.
I know it's hard to see, but all of the avatars are different combinations of colors. My avatar was (yep, you guessed it) two shades of purple. All I could think of was Barney the dinosaur and thus I became Barney in XO land and later on other internet sites.
Getting bored? Well, too bad. Anyway, I soon learned that my computer needed to be hooked up to the internet, but fortunately I had the curiosity of a child, which came in handy and figured out how to connect my computer onto the internet of the nearby school (it was an accident that I did this). And then I saw this:
These were the avatars of lots of other people who had purchased these wonderful little computers. Confession time: I thought all of these people were in my hometown. I didn't realize that they were from all over the world.
I soon figured out that there was a chat room and met a lot of wonderful people. Some of these people invited me to join their server where they taught me about computers and the joy of linux, on which these little computers were based. However, my new linux friends were so far ahead of me that I couldn't keep up with them. Just as I learned something, they were jumping into something else. it was frustrating. I guess you can call me a linux dropout.
But in one of the chat room discussions, there was talk about a website named Woot!, so I went there and watched. Keep in mind that I didn't know anything about buying things on the internet and I had heard all of these bad things about bad websites, so I watched. I lurked and lurked. I liked what I saw, but I still lurked.
And then I heard complaints about Woot! changing ownership and how it wasn't the same anymore. Eventually, there was talk (even though Woot tried to delete it) about a new site called Meh. And I came here.
Anyone still awake after reading this? Did I break the record?

Hanging on every word. ...
That was a wonderful story ! Bravo !
PS yes I will still keep the deal.
Took me a while but I found some purple clapping for you : )
@ceagee Yep, you owe me one. (I told you it was a long and boring story.)
@Barney It wasn't boring at all to me!
@KurtBuscus Aww, thanks.
Cool Barney! But I still don't know how your high school prom date went? If you want to beat @joelmw, you will have to step up your game ;-)
(Although you do score extra points for the charity angle)
@KDemo Well, you would have heard about all of that, too, and everything else that has happened in my life, but I got sleepy and cut my story short. Lucky, you!
Wow, fascinating! Thanks for sharing that story.
Ok, I've tried to resist, but (I'm a geek) - what computer do you use now?
@sligett I quickly found out that I am not a computer geek. In fact, I'm barely computer literate. Up until a couple of months ago, I was using an old Gateway laptop that a friend bequeathed me when he was moving out of state. Now I'm using a borrowed Acer Aspire laptop. Nope, no geekiness here.
I think you would have needed at lot more loosely-related tangents to really outdo my dad. But I loved the story! I'm glad you shared. I'm ready for another story!
@christinewas I guess you will have to blame @Thumperchick and her constant nagging. Also, @dashcloud got his two cents worth in.
More stories? Well, I guess I could always talk about my nightmare of a honeymoon... But for this, I would need lots of booze and I'm not allowed to drink anymore.
@Barney Such a cool story! I'm glad you told it, and I think you gave @joelmw a run for his money there.
@Barney wait, I wanna hear the booze story, or rather, the why you are not allowed to drink alcohol story!
@hammi99 Nothing mysterious or sinister about the lack of alcohol in my diet. I'm on some heart meds that do not play nice with booze.
@Barney oh gotcha. Was hoping for some juicy gossip story!
@hammi99 Yep, my life is pretty boring now.
Yay for @Barney verbosity! Need moar, pls.
I love purple!
@curtise Me, too!

@Pavlov Yes, the best of OLPC is gone and it made me sad. However, parts of OLPC still lives and as I understand still going strong in some places. These really are marvelous little computers, but the reason for their development, (a cheap, usable computer) was one on the main reasons for their demise. Laptops have become very affordable since 2007.
@Pavlov Nice to see you!
Do you still have your OLPC? What kind of system have you evolved to? I can't help but picture a purple Dell notebook.
@denboy Over the years, I purchased three computers. The last two were from individuals because OLPC never again offered the XO computer for sale to the general public. I believe this to be a huge mistake, but hey, what do I know. Anyway, I gave one to a friend and kept the other two. I still have them. Sadly, they are gathering dust on my bookcase shelf. However, I know of some people who are still using theirs from time to time.
Just a note: I was really terrible using Linux (which was called sugar) programming--making modifications in my little computers. So one of the gals on my server made me a special "adult" (no, not X-rated) build for me, called the Barney Build. I believe that other hopeless adults, such as I, were able to use this build to further explore the wonders of this little computer. I will never forget her kindness.
A purple Dell? Wow, they have such things? That would be really cool. I'm using a borrowed Acer Aspire because my old Gateway, which a friend gave me a few years ago, bit the dust. I've got to figure out what kind of computer I really want, but that has kind of taken the back burner for a while.
@Barney
@denboy Wow, you have just stolen my heart.
@denboy @barney This is a real computer, that you can purchase now- your very own purple monolith!
@dashcloud It's a very beautiful computer (be still my heart) and someday I will have one like it, but right now every extra penny I have will be going toward my mom's nursing home care. Nursing homes are very expensive and even though she has some LTC insurance, it will not cover all of her expenses.
This computer will now be in my purple dreams. Thank you.
You see what happens when you tell us stories? We love you even more. Thanks, @Barney. And don't you wait for a bad excuse to tell us another.
@joelmw Aww, (purple blush).
