An apple for @barney
19I went to a wonderful event at a local cidery today, and one of the highlights for me was just strolling through the vast orchard and admiring and photographing all the various cultivars of apple. One was particularly striking, and I feel I would be remiss for not sharing it with @barney:

Purple!!
Beautiful apple, and beautiful photo. Want a big bite!
@KDemo Was not easy walking through the orchard and not eating everything! Even the crabapples looked delightful!
You're sure that's not a plum?
@jqubed Haha, yes! I think it's a Kingston Black. But it might have been some other 'black' apple. 'Black,' apparently, is apple for 'purple.'
@brhfl Purple is the new black.
@brhfl I'm not sure that "black" is always for purple. There's a local grower (I live in apple country) that likes to grow the odd and unusual, and has the only local grove of Pinova apples (for example). She also grows one called Arkansas Black, which is a very dark skinned red apple (crisp, tart, and completely delicious). After looking at other Kingston Black apple photographs, I suspect that apple may often be less purple than it seems in the picture (but still delicious, I'm sure).
After further reading, it seems that the sunward side is more likely to be the purple one, and to answer @Barney's question on taste, appears to be better suited for contributing color and bitter notes to cider, than for eating.
@Shrdlu Yeah, I was just kidding… they had Arkansas Blacks there as well, and I occasionally buy those for eating when they show up at my local coop. As to the apple in the photo, I actually think it was more purple in person, getting the colors in the photo to match up was very difficult! I don't think I've ever eaten one of these, but the cider they had made from it was one of the paler ones, interestingly enough.
It's so beautiful! Perfect for our @barney
Love it!
@brhfl Cool apple. Did you get to taste one? Sweet or tart? I think I'd like a whole orchard of them in my backyard. I can just imagine waking up to all the pretty purple... Make it so! :)
@Barney I didn't eat one of these (should have, so many apples though!) but I did drink the cider they had made from it. Though, it was bourbon-barrel aged, and those notes came through more than anything specific to the apple, in my opinion…
Now that I think about it, I've had some potatoes that were called black but were really more of a very dark purple.
@jqubed I love purple.
Deep Purple . . .
@barney
Been here? https://www.thepurplestore.com
@tomvarela Yep, but they need to cut their prices in half before I buy something. Purple should not be that expensive.
