If I'm using an expensive brush (eg Sonicare) I tend to go longer. I'm not sure it's intentional or I'm just a cheap bastard (although they were married... huh) but it really does seem like I just use those until my teeth don't feel perfectly clean after using it. I change it at that point.
I think that's around 4 or 5 months, but honestly I don't track it. It could be 6... (Which is funny because when I bought my first Sonicare years ago, they recommended changing every 6 months.)
Oh, and side note: I don't really mind paying more for toothbrushes. I haven't had a cavity since I started using exclusively Sonicare's at home. That to me is worth it (although obviously no cause/effect has ever been proven...)
I use Radius brushes. I (probably falsely) feel like the giant heads last longer. Once I feel like it just isn't doing much anymore, I pitch it. Maybe 6 months? Maybe, realistically, 8? I have a pretty poor sense of time.
Sonicare, with generic heads from Woot! Jan1, Apr1, Jul1, Oct1 Plus or Minus a few days. The bristles are well worn after three months. Before I had Sonicare and used manual brushes I would change every few years or so. I can't imaging doing that now. What was I thinking?
When the bristles start getting all splayed out like someone wailed on them with a hammer I make a mental note to replace it, so, somewhere between 1 and 5 months after that when I actually remember while I'm actually at a store that carries toothbrushes.
I change my toothbrush when I go to the dentist and they give me another free toothbrush.
Who says I should buy new tooth brushes? Toothbrush companies?

People still brush their teeth? Tooth brushes are so 1980s.

I never understood why it wasn't called a teethbrush.
Only if I hapen to see one in pretty good shape at a yard sale.
