@ladyhawke001 I’m not a fan of herbal bullcrap, but the amounts involved probably are low enough to be ignored. Maybe. If I wasn’t desperately short at the moment, I might buy the dark version. But not the mint.
@dvermilion@ladyhawke001@xobzoo
That was hilariously informative. Thank you to who posted that, I learned a lot. I actually tried Tony’s chocolate last month and it was pretty good. I’m not much of a chocolate person and don’t really eat it a lot but that gave me incentive to boycott it from now on, except for baking chocolate maybe I can find better chocolate.
@ladyhawke001@werehatrack 150mg caffeine isn’t nothing. Many energy drinks contain that much (sure the extra bam slam power drinks do 300, regardless 150 is a decent amount). Anyone with kids would do well to treat these like poison around them. Caffeine overdose is very unpleasant. It is very possible to die from large amounts and and an excruciating death. From what I’ve read. These days 150mg is my limit m, less is more. I doubt I could have just one square and be happy.
@ladyhawke001@xobzoo nestle in general is such an evil conglomerate. I definitely try not to buy things from them if avoidable. I think John might have even covered them before a long time ago.
@ladyhawke001 i’m not the person you requested but I did the calculations. Assuming that caffeine is deadly at 150 mg per kilogram and an average child weighing in about 60 pounds (27kg). This box of chocolate could potentially kill 3 to 4 children. The total box of chocolate contains about 13,500 mg of caffeine.
I don’t know about other people, but it’s hard to just have one square of chocolate. Which is why I’m reminding people to put it out of small arms reach. Mind you that’s how many potential eight year old this box of chocolate can kill, even much less than I can make any child very uncomfortable in the form of caffeine overdose. If you ever wanna have fun, read the pub, med, case studies of people who take too many nodoozs. Yikes.
Ps by small arms I mean children not your bedroom glock.
Edit: when I did become such a safety ninny? Good gravy. Here I am just briefly checking in a daily deals site and reminding people to fasten their seatbelts and check their tires.
@qazxto yes, after stern discussions with my cardiologist about high blood pressure and stuff, he was re-assured that I said I was careful to limit to about 50mg in a morning, and in some cases maybe another 50mg later in the day.
I can’t imagine 150mg for a tasty piece of chocolate that would maybe make you want to eat more if you are hungry and they taste good.
Reminds me of a time I ate some brownies in college and they were really tasty so I ate a few more. hey kids, don’t do that! And us growed-ups too, unless the edibles are certified with lab testing and you understand your tolerance. Oh, wait, what were we talking about?
@Bigbearballs I have had the mint. I absolutely love dark chocolate, and they are very good IMO – I can’t taste the caffeine and they have a nice, rich flavor.
@Bigbearballs@creativecstasy@troy From the web:
“In its purest form, it [caffeine] is a white powder with a bitter, slightly soapy taste. Though you would never consume pure caffeine powder, that bitter taste comes through in many caffeinated foods and drinks.”
@Bigbearballs@creativecstasy@troy
“Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline purine, a methylxanthine alkaloid, and is chemically related to the adenine and guanine bases of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). It is found in the seeds, fruits, nuts, or leaves of a number of plants native to Africa, East Asia and South America,[18] and helps to protect them against herbivores and from competition by preventing the germination of nearby seeds,[19] as well as encouraging consumption by select animals such as honey bees…”
From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine
My concern with these is that they’re dark chocolate… so (unless they’re gross) there’s a really good chance I won’t stop at one.
They claim that each unit is the caffeine equivalent to 1½ cups of coffee…
Does anybody know risks associated with 15 cups of coffee in within an hour?
@werehatrack What I find interesting about that page:
Caffeine overdose occurs when someone takes in more than a normal or recommended amount.
But it never gives any indication what a “normal or recommended” amount actually is… (The Mayo Clinic, on the other hand, says 400mg/day is the upper limit of “safe” and claims that’s about 4 cups of coffee. But the actual amount in coffee varies a lot, just like the amount of coffee in the cup.)
And in their list of foods that have caffeine, it makes no distinction between coffee, tea, chocolate, and energy drinks — they’re all listed together as if they were all equally caffeinated.
However it did make me realize I don’t remember how much caffeine is naturally occurring in chocolate.
I had to dust off those links I saved back when I researched it once before… and the answer is “it depends.” (darkness of chocolate, source of the cocoa, who is reporting the number, and so forth) But possibly somewhere in the range of 1½ pounds of vaguely-dark chocolate to reach the 400mg of caffeine. Any bingeing [of regular chocolate] is probably safe from a caffeine standpoint.
Compared to 3 pieces (just 1 ounce) of today’s, which I could easily exceed without thinking about it. Unless it’s gross.
Candy and Gum – Taxable
Candy and gum are taxable. These include:
Bars, drops, taffy and other confections made of natural or artificial sweeteners.
Nuts and fruits that have been candied, crystalized, glazed or coated with chocolate, yogurt or caramel.
Nuts roasted with a sweetener.
Hmmm the dark chocolate (85% cocoa) I buy from Aldi’s are 25g each with 3g of sugar. These are 10g with 4g of sugar. These will be on the sweeter end of the dark chocolate spectrum.
Now & then I will eat a half an Alti’s bar washed down with reheated coffee in the afternoon. It is a mood altering combination of substances.
I’ve had dark chocolate expire. They start to get discolored & kina scary looking. They might be good to eat but I wouldn’t know because I toss them. 90 bars that will expire in a couple months might be a problem… Maybe Xmas gifts?!
@Joedetroit My mint batch with the 3/23/2024 have no chalky appearance for what it’s worth – should be good for the next 4 months. Having one right now
@Joedetroit the white stuff is cocoa butter (also known as white chocolate) it starts to separate from the rest of the chocolate. Still safe to eat just looks a little gross.
@Joedetroit@OnionSoup I’ve found little real difference in blushing chocolate vs fresh-and-glossy. I’ve never let the matte-and-lightened skin deflect me.
@bx2a5z@macromeh@OnionSoup WWII field rations included a tin of pemmican. About twenty years ago, one of the dwindling number of veterans of that era ran across a tin of it from a Korean war kit, and at the behest of its owner, opened it to see if it was just as awful as he could recall, or even worse. The result: It was differently awful. Not the same, but absolutely not any better. Only a tiny taste was consumed; the rest got trashed.
Tantalizing, but 2 important things to note with these:
That’s 150mg to all be absorbed at once unless you nibble them vs slowly sipping a large cup of coffee. Make no mistake, if 150mg of caffeine is above your baseline (most people don’t know the mg), then you WILL get jitters rather quickly.
With that much caffeine, or regardless, you have to drink water. That’s why most energy drinks forms are in… drinks. Caffeine can cause dehydration worst case, and dries your mouth best case. So again, make no mistake, you’re gonna need to make sure you’re getting good fluid intake when you take these.
@Vladiator The typical “stay awake” tablet contains 200mg of caffeine. They’re also truly dirt cheap as long as you avoid the brand-name and boutique bullshit types. A bottle of several hundred can be had for less than the price of a case of Monster, and each tab has more caffeine than one can of the “energy drink”.
These are the times when I wish there was just one half-and-half box for sale. Budget is too tight, and I’m only one person. Eating three boxes would take a while. They sound amazing and right up my alley. YUM!
I bought two sets of these. They are really tasty and seem to work well. However, each of my 6 boxes only had 29 chocolates, not 30, which I found super shady. If I had paid full price for these on Amazon I would have been really pissed. But a this price, I would buy again!

Waiting for @werehatrack to tell me what’s wrong with these…
@ladyhawke001 I’m not a fan of herbal bullcrap, but the amounts involved probably are low enough to be ignored. Maybe. If I wasn’t desperately short at the moment, I might buy the dark version. But not the mint.
@ladyhawke001 And as a side-distraction, how about this?
(which is not to say that eating chocolate makes you a bad person)
@werehatrack thank you sir
@ladyhawke001 @werehatrack Be careful, for they are sneaky. “ZenEvo” is “Oven EZ” backwards. So made with oven cleaner?
@ladyhawke001 @xobzoo It’s gonna take a hell of a lot more than John “it’s the Current Year” Oliver to move the needle for chocolate. lmao

I may have to get these, anyone had them before?
@Bigbearballs I have had the mint. I absolutely love dark chocolate, and they are very good IMO – I can’t taste the caffeine and they have a nice, rich flavor.
@Bigbearballs @troy
Does caffeine have a flavor?

Can confirm. Caffeine is bitter.

You would be too if you had been cheated out of all those residuals from Starbucks.

fuck this, give us what we really want. a pallet of CalorieMate.
@DrunkCat I would so be down for an irresponsible amount of CalorieMate!
@DrunkCat @mikesmells I had never heard of CalorieMate, and now I’m sure that it’s not worth the price. Thanks for the tip!
Nice try, meh. Cut the price by a third like you did with the hummus, then we’ll talk.

I don’t need these for driving. But they sound like they might help after lunch to keep me awake at work.

In Texas food items are not taxable but tax is being added to the total. Why?

Oh wait, I am that guy. Minus the skateboard.
Where is a full list of ingredients? Haven’t been able to find it here, Amazon, or on the company’s official site.
@Collectordragon On Amazon, look at the “questions” and search for “ingredients”. There is a video showing the ingredients from the package back (for the “dark chocolate”, anyway).

Exlax?
No thanks. I’ll wait for the chocolates with benzodiazepines in them…
@MrNews a legit xanax bar
@Dstraktd That’s what I had in mind…
@MrNews try L theanine. It’s not bad. Goes well with a little upper like caffeine and theobromine (dark chocolate).
@qazxto Yes, I’ve seen L. theanine mixed with melatonin. Said to be mildly sedating.
@MrNews @qazxto

I want tryptophan chocolates.
Caffeine chocolates were a thing in WW2.
@bx2a5z So was syphilis.
@bx2a5z so were free cigarettes, no? But these are probably a better choice.
@bx2a5z @macromeh if I eat caffeine chocolates will I get syphilis?
Random fact that is a complete tangent but for some reason cocaine chocolate and syphilis made me think of it:
Meat Lozenges used to be a thing. Hunks of jerky suspended in a gelatin casing. Some historical trends deserved to die.
@bx2a5z @macromeh @OnionSoup WWII field rations included a tin of pemmican. @theangelicious1 I suspect that you just discovered why they were being remaindered out on meh.
These arrived a couple of days ago. The boxes were a little banged up from bouncing around in the shipping box, but the chocolates were fine.
I’ve shared them at work and both the mint and regular dark are a hit, except with the one person who doesn’t like dark chocolate.
