@RogerWilco thank you. My friend will be quite happy. He is also asking for another friend who is getting ready to bury his Rat. Sad times my friends. Say a prayer. No MEH overnight express shipping just sucks in this sad story
@bugger Great question; timing is everything. Our semi-indoor cat just caught a large juvenile male rat. In the GD house! We’re now in the process of walking every inch of the house looking for an entry place. Don’t have a casket and don’t want to wait for this product to arrive, so we’ll have to do what we do with her outdoors trophies (the remaining parts, anyway): double-bag it in a ziploc bag and toss it into the garbage.
On a lighter note, I’m going to buy two of these magnetized toys. Grandchild’s birthday = plan ahead.
@magic_cave - When we had an outdoor cat he would bring the catch of the day into the house to play with it. One time he brought in a mouse and after prodding it a while lost interest in it. When I went to pick up the mouse’s motionless body, it jumped up and ran under the bed.
I’m just saying – the hole may be in the security system, not the house!
@aetris Hey! That bring-it-back-to-life super power might come in real handy some day!
Thank you for the suggestion; I hadn’t thought of that possibility. Our “garage cat” is partially feral, so she’s generally outside, although after a year or so of bowing and groveling every chance we get, we’ve finally convinced her it’s okay to come inside occasionally, especially on the colder nights (below 70o). She was in last night.
Usually, however, she’ll bring whatever is left of it to our backdoor mat and tell The Spouse he should adore her all the more because she brought him such a wonderful gift.
In this particular event I actually heard the catch happen. Not nice. We’re in the [apparently] eternal] process of sorting out clutter and closets for trash, yard sale, or keeping, so there are a cluster of filled plastic bags sitting along the dining room wall. The noise I heard was strongly reminiscent of my-son-as-a-child (which means 45+ years ago) batting around yard-waste bags full of leaves. This was fairly loud, so I dashed from our office to the dining room. And there she was, happily batting around a seriously dead rat. I’ve never before seen a cat smiling up at me; made me really happy that I’m bigger than she is. When I realized what was going on, I yelped for The Spouse to come inside. All things considered, I’d really rather the cat continues doing her hunting outside.
@kdemo My quick and shoddy Googling says both of those things have something to do with sellin’ shit in Europe, so they’re prolly only that thing you said if’n you intend to eat em in that place where all the white people come from.
Are these knockoff Magformers?
How far into my kids intestine will these get before breaking apart?
This is from Dec 30, 2018:
Jennifer White, a mother from Wisconsin, posted on Facebook that her son Beck, 4, had swallowed ‘13 tiny magnets’ after breaking open what appears to be a Magformers tile toy.
‘He has finished with surgery they had to remove part of his colon, intestines and appendix,’ Jennifer updated after taking her son to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. ‘The magnets created holes and infection in his intestines.’
@mike808 You could buy your kids these for a lot less money… Just as colorful, every bit as dangerous to internal organs if swallowed, but no deadly shards of broken plastic to worry about!
@ciabelle@mike808 Holy Carp! Is that a current ad? I ask because on 2014 the CPSC has banned sales of them in the US and instituted a voluntary recall. They paid me $145 to turn in the various sets I had.
@mike808
a) How did a 4 year old break them open?
b) Where were the parents while this was happening?
c) They didn’t find out about it until the kid got sick. Did the 4 year old throw away the broken pieces?
d) Why is a 4 year old still trying to eat toys?
Ah… when I saw this reported awhile back it didn’t have details. Your article mentions this: ‘We had made sure that he was old enough, the age on the box, I chewed it myself. It sounds crazy but I have special needs children and sometimes you need to go a little extra and I did those things to make sure,’ White added. ‘If you have them in your home make sure+ you know when they’re being played with, don’t let the kids have them by themselves.’
So, basically, don’t buy them if you have a child with special circumstances who is prone to eating toys. This warning could apply to everything, really.
@ciabelle@magic_cave@mike808 You have to know your child and use your judgement as a parent. My daughter has similar toys and she is only 5. I know, without a doubt, she would NEVER break them open and put one of the magnets in her mouth. (let alone swallow 13 of them) She knows not to break her toys without asking (it can be fun and educational sometimes) and she knows not to put toys in her mouth. I’m not just saying that because “she’s a perfect little angel”. I’m know this from 5 years of observation and interaction with her. Kids can be unpredictable, but as far as this scenario goes, I know she would know better.
It sounds like the mother in the story was worried about them being unsafe for her particular child and underestimated her child’s determination and ability to break into them. If you have ANY doubt about whether something is safe for your particular situation, don’t buy it. That’s your job as a parent regardless of what the age on the box says.
It’s a true message in a bottle,…
Seriously Meh how did this get posted?
Who actually synthesized this “art”?
The next thing will be a school shooting on here…
It might have been a little too strong on Valentine’s Day especially being the anniversary of the Parkland massacre to do this one. It reminds me of the Panama papers… No regard for anyone else.
I mean I am not into extreme censorship but seriously
“Soft and hard” targets on VD maybe not the way to go…
@punkynpye For what it’s worth, I couldn’t find any age-info either, so I checked out the similar toys mentioned in comments on Amazon. Several people were very pleased with how much their children ages (2, 3,5,11) liked them. My grandson will be 5 in August, so I think I’m safe buying them for him. I actually bought two sets, figuring more is always better than less, especially when one is considering toys or carrot cake.
@fibrs86 Actually, looking at it now I’m not sure it would be possible to build that thing as shown with any number of these kits. The large bases appear to be made out of triangles rather than the large square tiles, and have narrow right-triangles at the edges. These pieces to not appear to be among those included in the kit.
@Willijs3 After adding the magnets, I assume they fuse the halves of each piece through untrasonic welding thus ensuring a solid seal keeping the dangerous magnets at bay.
Warning on compatibility. I haven’t tried this brand but I have tried a couple others.
Magna Tiles is the original, and a very high quality, very expensive product.
Picasso Tiles is a good quality knock-off. It is what we started buying.
We tried “Playmags” and they look like they are the same size and they should be compatible, but they just weren’t.
The picassotiles 100-piece set is not too terribly much more per piece, I’d recommend you go with that.
@kayseven missed something obvious - the giphy command that gets you random allegedly related giphys to the phrase you used. /giphy (on it’s own line) followed by a phrase does it

@hchavers No.
@hchavers No. The lawsuits will see to that.

@hchavers It’s like you think this is a Quip toothbrush or something.
@hchavers @Sam5max February?? That’s like two months after Christmas.

Wtf. I love these - not. Can you make a rat casket out of these or do I need two sets? Asking for a friend
@bugger 4 sets per king rat casket.

How do these feel under the feet at night? The pyramid shapes look really comfortable.
@hchavers Compared to a lego, like a pillow.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6540493/Boy-4-colon-removed-swallowing-13-magnets-toy-tore-intestines.html
@mike808 Appendix and colon are pretty hard to beat for distance. Cheap Chinese knockoffs might only make it to the duodenum.
@mike808 You could buy your kids these for a lot less money… Just as colorful, every bit as dangerous to internal organs if swallowed, but no deadly shards of broken plastic to worry about!

@ciabelle @magic_cave Yup.
It’s OK. They have a clear disclaimer. What could possibly go wrong?
I really liked all the comments …
@ciabelle @mike808 Yep. It’s always because “my kid is mature enough to handle them properly.”
@mike808

So I have an 11 year old grandson…what’s the target age for these?
@punkynpye For what it’s worth, I couldn’t find any age-info either, so I checked out the similar toys mentioned in comments on Amazon. Several people were very pleased with how much their children ages (2, 3,5,11) liked them. My grandson will be 5 in August, so I think I’m safe buying them for him. @punkynpye These are really popular at my kid’s preschool (3 to 5 year olds). I’m not sure what the top end of the range is.
@punkynpye My niece is three and she loves these.
@punkynpye These are probably too simple for an 11 year old.
@punkynpye my 10-year-old son still plays with them, but it’s a gamble.
Well, These look like they make great condoms…
What exactly is this thread about?
@rustyh3 - Creative Chaos.
You can’t build the ‘middle school tower dance’ with just one of these sets. You will need three sets to build those large cubes at the base.
Here to be “that guy.” That’s meant to be Tower Bridge, not London Bridge.
@falseaccount Isn’t the Tower Bridge in London, making it a London bridge?
@Cythwulf @falseaccount Is Highland Falls, NY a New York City?
@falseaccount
@falseaccount @Limewater It is! I’m glad we’re on the same page.
Is meh.com, a mediocre website?
London Bridge is an Arizona bridge.
@zachdecker I actually didn’t know that.
Good to know London Bridge isn’t.
