The nutritional label says it has 16 g of carbs and 8 g of fiber. That means 8 g of net carbs, but the copy says 3.
WTF? (we’re totally flummoxed) . . . ???
@docflash If you look at the bottom of the nutrition label they deduct 5g for the use of sugar alcohols glycerin and erythritol. Seems that should appear in the added sugar content, and they didn’t even factor in the polydextrose and sucralose in that calculation.
IOW: That label is a bit sketchy, and this is dirty keto at best, and not recommended at all if you are in/wish to remain in ketosis.
Oddly enough, many of the reviews (even recent ones) on the Zon mention that the ingredients cite maltitol, while these conspicuously say that they don’t have it. They’ve got erythritol, though; people sensitive to sugar alcohols will not be happy to hear that. Also, chicory is cited as an ingredient, which will dismay those sensitive to inulin. And the math on the carbs doesn’t add up well, producing further uncertainty. In my specific case, because I have yet to order a snack from Meh that I successfully finished before it went downhill, I’ll skip these despite actually being marginally interested. I’ve been skipping the huge boxes at Costco, too, for both that same reason and several others, so no explicit disparagement exists here.
@werehatrack I’m in, but I am not particularly sensitive to sugar alcohols or inulin. And they are probably playing fast and loose on the net carbs because of the sugar alcohols.
@liquidbluenight There’s a bit more nuance to it; broader research is needed, but generally speaking yes it’s best to avoid highly process, chemically reliant foods
@ekyles@Mandamm As far as I’ve been able to check, zero. There is apparently some evidence correlating high consumption of erythritol with certain blood issues, but from what I saw, no causative linkage has been established for erythritol and any specific health issue outside of its known propensity for acting as a laxative for many individuals. Correlation does NOT prove causation, and it is generally unwise to assume it does.
@Lynnerizer Meh. Remember that you’re in an internet comment section. There’s always a lot of half-understood or completely misinformed nutritional “knowledge” being thrown around from the “artificial = poison” alarmists.
As far as I can tell everything in these is fine. At worst, the fiber and polydextrose might make you kinda gassy if you’re prone to it.
I’m mostly looking for a review on the flavor. Protein bars can sometimes be weirdly delicious to me, but just as often be completely inedible. Would be good to know before buying 4 dozen of the things
@Lynnerizer@SirBinks The majority of the reviews on Amazon about the flavor were positive. It’s been my experience that with snack bars of this type, it’s not uncommon for people to dislike them for a reason that is fairly idiosyncratic. Ergo, really, the only thing you can do is try them. And if you are the type of person who doesn’t mind eating the same acceptable snack frequently for a long period of time, then buying these might make sense. For me, that seldom works.
I’ve gotten these before. Can’t speak to whatever everyone is saying about ingredients as I haven’t done the research but I can tell you they are pretty good in terms of taste. They definitely have the “fake sugar” aftertaste but it’s better than many of the other products I’ve tried. I enjoyed the raspberry ones the most by far. For the price I’ll probably get some and throw them in hiking bags and other places I might want a kick snack.

Neon? Why not argon?
@yakkoTDI Argon? Why not Xenon?
@mehcuda67 @yakkoTDI I wanted Krypton, but seems I heard it exploded.
@mehcuda67 @phendrick @yakkoTDI I think if you eat this you might explode (not in a good way) from all that good fiber!
@mehcuda67 @yakkoTDI Zeetus Lapeetus!
@mehcuda67 @robson @yakkoTDI Best to occasionally (and subtly) let off some of the pressure.
@gaspingatstraws @mehcuda67 @yakkoTDI
Are you invoking this being?
@gaspingatstraws @mehcuda67 @phendrick @yakkoTDI Why is he holding Laserdiscs?
@PooltoyWolf “Y’think these would make good earrings?”
@werehatrack Heh!
/showme why meh.com keeps trying to sell me food
@mediocrebot Whaddya say about me mum??1?1?2!
@mediocrebot
“You Mow you”?
No, “I mow lawn”. You AIs are so dumb.
Safe for the Celiac gang? I don’t see wheat/ gluten in ingredients but see may contain??
Anyone eaten theses???
@Cerridwyn Theses are filling, but you really need dissertations to be fully sated.
@Cerridwyn @phendrick It’s all a matter of degree.
Thanks, I feel sick now.
@fuzzmanmatt success - curbing appetites already!

WTF? (we’re totally flummoxed) . . . ???
@docflash The erythritol may be buggering the math.
@docflash Sugar Alcohols. Rule of thumb for calculating net carbs of sugar alcohols is divide in half or so.
@docflash in tiny print above the UPC in the linked nutrition facts is this: *total carbs (16g) - fiber (8g) - glycerin (3g) - erythritol (2g) = 3g NetCarbs
@ciabelle The sucralose amount will be in milligrams at most, with no nutritional effect that would contribute to the calculations.
These sound/look gross… pass
/showme the loudest keto bar fart in the world

I’m getting diarrhea just from reading the ingredients. Is this food or a textile product?
@awk Even “product” is being generous
@awk I think it’s a laxative.
Recent data indicates ingestion of erythritol is associated with higher risk of heart attack and stroke: https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/erythritol-cardiovascular-events
@liquidbluenight There’s a bit more nuance to it; broader research is needed, but generally speaking yes it’s best to avoid highly process, chemically reliant foods
They say low carb, but I am pretty sure they meant to say they taste like cardboard.
@hchavers Low carbdoard?
Lost me on the ERYTHRITOL and SUCRALOSE.
Yep… Shouldn’t be selling this Poison MEH!!! Erythritol is banned in other countries… Shame…On You!
@Mandamm can you share a country where it’s banned?
@ekyles @Mandamm As far as I’ve been able to check, zero. There is apparently some evidence correlating high consumption of erythritol with certain blood issues, but from what I saw, no causative linkage has been established for erythritol and any specific health issue outside of its known propensity for acting as a laxative for many individuals. @ekyles @Mandamm at worst, it’s pending approval in Europe (along with stevia extract)
https://polyols-eu.org/polyols/erythritol
I can’t ever touch a product containing SUCRALOSE again. That sh*t poisoned me (looking at you, Nestle) and now I’m hyper sensitive to it.
@uwacn Nestle. They don’t care. Look up their track record.
Artificial flavor is the first sign they don’t care if they kill you. The other ingredients you’ll find the horrors of by googling. But hey, protein.
Before I read the comments I was actually thinking about trying them!
@Lynnerizer same! Always got to read the comments prior to purchase!
@Lynnerizer I was going to comment that Sucralose gives me headaches but after reading the comments I think erythritol may be a worse ingredient.
@Lynnerizer consider the source.

@Lynnerizer @SirBinks
Someone did already mention them tasting like cardboard.
@Lynnerizer @SirBinks The majority of the reviews on Amazon about the flavor were positive. It’s been my experience that with snack bars of this type, it’s not uncommon for people to dislike them for a reason that is fairly idiosyncratic. Ergo, really, the only thing you can do is try them. @Lynnerizer @SirBinks Am already prone to gas, so definitely a no go.
@Lynnerizer @SirBinks I just got these today and really like them. So there.

Meh gross. There’s a reason people are not buying these things and they get shoved off in pallets to the all the sites to dump off.
They are the opposite of healthy. Still love this site tho.
Let me get this straight. I buy these candy bars, and I then have to add my own sugar to them? What is this? Cooking class?
@txag96 lol
Wish they showed the nutritional facts and any possible allergy warnings. A picture of the back of the box would have helped.
