I am a lazy vegetarian that avoids added sweeteners of all types. These are quite handy for traveling since they don’t require refrigeration.
My wife sleeps late and never eats breakfast. When I crave protein in the morning, I can spread this stuff on tortilla wraps and eat something without leaving the hotel room or wherever we are staying.
I usually don’t go to the effort of adding lemon, but when it is available, it definitely improves the flavor.
While I was able to make the regular and red-pepper versions palatable, nothing could save the “Zesty” for me. Be prepared to need to add garlic and olive oil at a minimum.
Just finished my last batch. I didn’t notice anything particularly ‘off’ about it, it’s just a hair on the bland side. Perhaps it’s too much tahini in relation to everything else? It’s good enough, especially at 50 cents a tub, and would also work quite well added to a homemade batch to make a much larger quantity easily. Just add some extra lemon and garlic, those are what’s most missing from these.
@gdorn I think it’s a tactile issue. The flavor, or lack thereof, is there. It’s boiled, puree’d garbanzo beans with boiled, puree’d sesame, vacuum sealed/flash sealed. Lacks any oil or garlic though (which probably helps making it shelf stable).
I’m not a fan of the classic; it’s just filling. Nutritious it is for sure, but so is pea protein powder (and note all the flavored varieties there are). This isn’t a caveat emptor, just a suggestion if you do buy (and it is a great price), you will need to adulterate it yourself after opening.
As an example: Meh was selling some plain miso ramen a while back that I found tasteless and unfilling; it had extended shelf life at the cost of a lack of salt and grease. Topped with the hummus, it at least became filling. To make it an enjoyable meal, I needed to cook two strips of bacon and then boil/fry the noodles in the same pan before topping with hummus and chives.
This hummus is… OK I guess? I found it to be more “creamy” than the non-shelf-stable kind. I didn’t get the classic, I got the red and the green flavors, and neither one is anything special.
Yeah, I bought a batch of this last year when it was a buck a container. And like almost everybody else who has commented on this stuff, I found it to have a distinct “off” flavor. The spicy and regular versions both suffer by comparison to homemade or pretty much any other commercial hummus I’ve tried.
I also am not wild about the texture. It’s overprocessed to an extreme where you barely know there’s any chickpeas in there.
That said, it’s now 50 cents a container. And you have to ask yourself just how picky you have a right to be at that price. It’s edible, and I expect I’ll eventually work my way through that batch, but I don’t think I’ll be buying it again.
I’m tempted to buy this again. It’s at the same price as last time, but Meh is shoveling them out 48 at a time instead of 12 or 24; at that volume, I’m going to have to pass (or ask for a better deal).

@werehatrack I liked the Zesty one the most, actually.
I’ll do Meh a favor here & say that at this price I’d buy it again. (But I still have some, so I’m not.)
